Nobody at all should be surprised that Strand Hunter is top dog since Ahamkara's got nerfed.

Let's look at this. What's the meta in Trials and competitive game modes at their core? Get to certain map positions, hold them, and teamshoot. Period. That's it. That's been the meta since D2 launch, unless there was something so outrageously powerful that became unnecessary (shatterdive, for example). Now, which two classes have abilities that lock down positions? Titans and Warlocks (barricade and rift). This is not some "But *insert class here* has whatever." Post. It is just a fact that those abilities are good at well, what they're meant to be good at. Titans and Warlocks also can traverse the maps faster than Hunters with no mobilitiy investment. Again, that's just an observable fact. Does Hunter dodge control the map? No. It was never meant to. And that's okay.
And normal grenades are irrelevant because every class has the same grenades.
So, Hunters needed something that counters their speed and/or achieves the goal of map control. Enter Ahamkara's. Say what you want about them, but they gave Hunters an answer to the faster classes with superior map control class abilities. You could beat the Hunter to the map position, but you couldn't beat their tripmine. It was a very good answer, with arguably too much uptime. Then Ahamkara's got nerfed (butchered, really). And standard tripmines blow. You can shoulder charge past them and only take like 3 damage, if any at all. Heck sometimes they hit for "immune." So now Hunters once again needed something that counters the superior speed and map control of Warlocks and Titans. And guess what does that really well? Strand Hunter. Now Hunters can get there as fast or faster with grapple, or they can spam threadings to control the flow of the map. And sure enough, people want it nerfed now, too. And all of this because the root of the problem remains unchanged - mobility doesn't matter, so the classes with the best map control abilities are the fastest while deliberately tanking their mobility stat. If mobility were reworked to affect sprint speed, slide distance, momentum gains, etc. so it was much harder to control the map while getting there first, I seriously think there would be more variety in PvP. Of course, movement exotics would need complete overhauls, or they'd just have to give like +50 mobility of something. If this pattern persists, and Strand gets nerfed (as I fully expect it to), Hunters are just simply going to gravitate towards the next option that counters that playstyle of "Titan skate/Icarus dash and put down that class ability", or pick up the Stompees again, which is also a total loss of PvP variability. I, for one, do not think this loop is sustainable long-term, especially within Trials.
