Bungie should offer a way to edit character appearance post-creation

From a trans player's perspective, it would be nice if Bungie could include some manner of character editing even after their initial creation. Many players create characters that perhaps reflect themselves in real life, and if Bungie wants to live up to the commitment they've set for their trans players, they should include some form of character edit tokens in case players are not satisfied with their character's appearance. Whether it be due to mistakes in creation or, as I referenced above, their character no longer reflecting who they are in real life, I genuinely believe Bungie would not stand to lose anything from a character editing system.

  • All games with character customization should have this. Even if it costs money. FFXIV does. And you can change your gender and race as well has the basic hair, lip color, eyes ears, etc. I would want Bungie to also announce that there would be a WIDER option for character customization. But when they do announce it, know that they shouldn't be praised for it. This should have been in the game at launch. They should have taken notes from other games like FFXIV.

Buy generic armor/weapons froma vendor, take off everything you have and put it in the vault, remake your character. Should take you about a week to be right back where you were. Other wise youre stuck just the way you are...ironic. Also 9/10 you never see your character and they virtually never have speaking lines, so do like usual and just pretend.

            • Vault your stuff, create a new guardian. Get your stuff back. I've done it both at gen 3 TTK, and gen 4 D2, and it's a lot easier here.

            • Just move all your stuff and delete the character to remake.

              • Well this one of the more useless threads I've read. I do not know of many people who have made their characters based on themselves in any games. Especially one where role-playing seems kinda hard and pointless. I mean in a looters shooter, who cares what gender your character is or what it looks like? Should we have people be able to be a door ingame, for those who identify as a door!
From a trans player's perspective, it would be nice if Bungie could include some manner of character editing even after their initial creation.
On one hand, I get the suggestion. Moral reasons aside, I'm not looking at that. That doesn't determine why something should be in place or not, to the business side of things. If it can increase engagement with the game or bring in revenue in some manner, then it probably will be brought in, provided it doesn't break anything. Now on the other hand, you're also going to hear:
It's a video game, your appearance and stance shouldn't matter in that, since it doesn't represent your real life, where your appearance and stance, might matter to some or many.
Both sides are correct in their own way. Realistically, and in my opinion, a video game represents a hobby or passion. Perhaps something one does to pass (waste) time on. Trade time for entertainment/engagement. The above can be argued for both sides pretty easily. That's besides the point. Could Bungie throw up a kiosk to interact with the "character creation" menu? They probably could. Would they add more customization to it? That one will probably be a hard "no". Any cutscenes already in place would need to be redone, as well as any work where the character face shows (at least, these are my initial thoughts thinking about the potential process.) Then you have to hope nothing breaks as a result, for....reasons unknown (probably bugs or incompatibility with the game engine.) The game already slows down when loading on old hardware, and due to the connections to others in the game depending on location. Adding more "graphics" through a "change of face" might cause more issues than needed. Otherwise, regardless of perspective and stance, the least I could see Bungie trying is allowing us to go back to the character creation menu and using what's already there. Complaints and suggestions to add to that menu will probably fall flat and lead to more frustration, I'd imagine, Bungie wouldn't want to deal with, which might be a reason (out of many) why nothing has been done over the number of years. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

                  • You should assume that a character editor never will be available. A couple years ago Bungie stated they were looking into the possibility of adding an editor, but nothing became available. The current editor was created before the release of D1, probably by one of the studios to which Bungie no longer has access. Bungie might have discovered that the code is coupled with multiple parts of the game, and that it cannot be separated easily. The workaround would be to build a new editor and add it to the game, which is easier said than done.

                  • This feature is actually in the game already! It's called creating a character, and you do it whenever you start a new character. There is literally nothing stopping you from just making a new character the way you made a new you. It's a complete waste of time for them to add a feature you already have access to, so they won't.

                    • Quite the straw-man argument to make it seem that unless Bungie allows post character creation character modification they don’t actually care about trans issues. Plenty of non-trans people want such a feature. You’re not being devalued as a person just because a video game doesn’t let you modify your character. Bioware is another progressively minded company, with Dragon Age Inquisition even having a trans character, but you couldn’t change the race or gender after you started the game. Some games just don’t let you modify your character after the game has started. It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if your character’s appearance being set and permanent is a hard coded requirement that would make changing that a very costly, time consuming, and risky process to update. Which if true could be something an actual Destiny 3 could have rectified from its inception. Which would be another tally in the column of why we could all wish we’d just get a Destiny 3 already.

                          • Just out of curiosity, is it more of the character voice and facial appearance changes that are the issue or the visible body habitus of your character and how they look in their armor? I totally get the former, because if you’re playing a cutscene with your helmet off and your character actually has spoken lines and a physical appearance then it does become a big deal. Personally, if it were the latter then I’d think Bungie would be better off trying to retain a single unisex design model for armor and the like as wearing armor only has ever had one singular practical purpose; looks can be a secondary focus.

                            • The ability to modify our Guardians appearance SHOULD be a feature. We know it should be a thing, Bungie knows it should be a thing. Bungie just doesn't want to do the work.

                              • "We've been asking for 8 years" comments need to be ignored Gotta keep asking. We finally got a new + returned crucible map after so long, so it's not like they're ignoring us completely. They have put forward a lot of new "woke" incentives lately. So keep asking. It could come down to how the game was made, D2 was built on D1's code after all. Dunno how hard or how hacky it would be to re-customize an existing character, much harder than updating meshes and textures of existing presets / faces though. Enough traction should at least get a comment on it by social media, which alone would attract even more attention. But again, keep asking. Not just here either.

Week 2 of Destiny 1 was the 1st time this was asked for. As others have said, you want your video game character to look different? Vault your stuff, but random crap armor, delete the character and make a new one. Get up to level, visit vault, get gear back. Bob’s your uncle.
