Hello, this is because destiny does not support steam proton. battleye software also kicks this off on most VPNs because VPNs can be used in a way to circumvent IP bans. This is why it will not let you connect because battleye is unable to get your IP for your server to connect to their server. Using a VPN on its own would not result in a ban. However, if the VPN introduces networking issues causing your connection to other players in Competitive game modes to be less than optimal it could result in suspensions from Crucible and Gambit lasting anywhere from two weeks to two months at a time I would check out this article also regarding steam proton if you are using this ever:
Steam Play Proton: Destiny 2 is not compatible with Steam Play's Proton. Attempting to circumvent this incompatibility will result in a game ban.
If you want a better internet connection with less latency I would check out bungie's network troubleshooting guide: https://help.bungie.net/hc/en-us/articles/360049496531

  • I'm pretty sure you're confusing ProtonVPN with the Proton compatibility layer for Linux, which I'm not using - in fact, Destiny's incompatibility with Linux even when using Proton was a major reason why I settled for Bill's bloatware instead of trying out Fedora or Mint on my current laptop. I've actually been to the section of the website you've linked once before, particularly regarding UPnP and port forwarding, based on previous attempts to Duck up a solution for myself. However, despite quite a bit of back and forth menu searching, my router's settings had not a hint of anything related to UPnP, and when I painstakingly typed in all the port numbers as Bungie's article recommended, xfinity's page only succeeded in hacking up an uninformative error that blanked my progress upon trying to submit. Given I don't have direct access to the router settings in my household, I'm loathe to repeat the ordeal if the issue is likely due to BattleEye's anti-VPN paranoia rather than anything inherently wrong with my connection settings.

I utilizes expressVPN and in some cases, I get better latency and jitter/packet loss then without at times. Great for protecting against the DDoS'ing special people.
