What is Your Player Versus Player Experience?

So I've only played since quarantine, and that was because only now I've had the opportunity. I like this game. I enjoy a lot of it. Lore and style and tone and play, and the only thing I have not tried is Trials, but only because Saint-14 scares me. No, seriously, the chipper Russian Exo feeding birds scares me. But I do come to a problem, and one I don't intend to voice as simply someone who is bad at Crucible. I'll touch on it briefly, but I don't enjoy Crucible. With or without friends. Despite my desire to acquire the associated pinnacle weapons (though with sunsetting as it is in the present, it looks to not matter anyway), it hasn't been good for me to play Crucible or similar PvP activities, regardless of my relative skill or lack thereof. I've decided that it's not for me, and I won't push myself against it if it brings no joy and only makes me angry, and my friends sad because it makes me angry. But despite that, questions linger in my mind, questions I can't answer myself. I want to present a question to the community. What, in your relative time since starting the game and entering Crucible, Trials, and Iron Banner, has your experience with these activites been like? Since I can't play (or won't for one reason or another) in such activities, I want to know what it's like for you, gauge a medium between the responses. Answer as you like, I won't be responding to the answers after this post, though I will read them. -EDIT- I know I said I wouldn't respond, but I have to make an amendment to the prefacing surrounding my question. I don't want to take it seriously. I'm getting impressions that no one should unless you're trying to make a career out of it or you're competent enough with your ability that such a thing isn't stressful in the way that it is for filthy casuals like yours truly. And that's another thing I must amend. I do hereby proclaim myself a novice, but apparently according to my friends I'm not hot garbage, and according to one whom I take seriously and respect on a level I won't describe here, I'm better than them, and they're experienced, having played since around launch. I don't want to call them a liar, but the numbers mean nothing to me. As far as I was concerned playing Crucible, the only thing that mattered was getting the pinnacle weapons. I did try to have fun, but none of the weapons on the grind were ones that fit what I was good at — being a horrible titan with AWR and a Hard Light holding corners and suppressing targets on Control (by all means, critisise how braindead that is, I've only played for, what, eight months? (being locked in is driving me nuts)). It was difficult to have fun with weapons that required more skilled use than just standing at a corner, aiming at a corner down a hall or choke, and spray to discourage the curious. Scouts and pulses are hard to use, and the difference in rounds down range in comparison to spray and pray autos meant I was less likely to hit. Securing kills wasn't important, I often made more wins with fewer kills and left that to everyone else, instead securing points (I should also note that until I learned of the Recluse and Mountaintop's requirements for Glory because Triumph unlocks I only ever played Control unless coerced by friends because I valued their company more than my suffering) and keeping opponents away from them. That, I want to think I was good at. But when the game turned from letting me be a disgusting area denial tool (I don't think highly of myself, if it wasn't evident) and told me to get the best, and complete the collection, I had to be the piece of -blam!-, sweaty tryharding, fun hating, unlock abusing, dog kicking, baby punching, Bambi's mother killing, double parking, Game of Thrones spoiling, making plans and backing out at the last minute, lemon stealing, talking in the middle of Seinfeld, Mei maining, shitposting little -blam!- (name that reference, I'm just using it for a joke, I don't perceive most players this way, though there was one guy using the Curse of Osiris selfie emote after every kill on my sixth game) I always despited playing against, it became far more serious than I wanted. I mean, it's hard to play casually when to get them unlocked you need to do things that require more skill, more brainpower, and are generally frustrating to play against, let alone with if you're not accustomed to it, right? I know this sounds whiny, might very well be, but when all you've played with is autos, subs, machines, shotties, and for Forsaken lols, a bow in PvE, asking you to use precision weapons and hand cannons for exotics (I don't have Thorn, or Ace of Spades, or even Lumina, go on, laugh) and pinnacles against players, which are far more less predictable, can adapt, and are often far and above your level of play or if not are more sensible with positioning and experienced with high skill weapons, it's difficult to not take it seriously when being casual with those guns doesn't afford you opportunities to secure a kill which is needed to get progress (assists don't count and as far as I know have never counted). Now I'm just rambling, but I hope that explains some of my internal thought process. I want the guns, I don't see a way to obtain them casually, and as far as I've read and seen it's really not possible unless you spend two years doing it. Since such a style doesn't suit me, and has actively brought me harm, I don't want to pursue guns that are apparently drenched in the blood of your enemies, and mixed with sweat tainted in rage and frustration (my interpretation of it, could be wrong, probably am), since it's not fun, I'm not good, I won't play, and instead do something else like read the backlog of books I've gotten since last Christmas. Unless someone brings up a good point, I should not respond again, and if I do, by all means flame me because by then it's my own fault, and I'll probably be crying salt by then.

I don’t care about PvP enough to play enough to get good at it. I only play it when something I want requires me too. I used to play online shooters a lot “back in the day” so I guess I’m average, but I got bored of them and Destiny’s PvP isn’t different enough for me to care. That being said, it seems like it’s basically always unbalanced in some way and all they do is just change something to address it which shifts the meta, then something else needs tweaked so they eventually do that, which shifts the meta, now something else is off, another change that shifts the meta. Over and over and over again. Even IF I was into PvP and regularly played it, I could see how that would get old quick. I honestly don’t ever expect it to feel balanced. Players will always find the most proficient builds and they will dominate and then Bungie will take it from them and then it will shift to another thing that will eventually get nerfed. Seems like this connected PvE/PvP thing is more trouble than its worth but apparently Bungie doesn’t think so and is fine with frequently changing it. 🤷‍♂️

Unbalanced teams-in both skill and amount of players on each team being unequal. Unreliable- network errors, rubberbanding players, teamates dropping mid-match, bad bullet and melee reg. Boring- same game modes, same rewards, etc. Broken- new gear not properly play tested before being put in the sandbox, constant gear lockouts due to bugs. I quit playing destiny 2 daily when weapon retirement was announced back in the feb directors cut. When I play, which is rare nowadays, its to play mayhem. As its at least quick if any unbalance or reliability problems show up, its somewhat fun, and one of the last places you can still feel powerful in the game regardless of bad meta shifts.

  • I don't play much crucible but figured I'd do the weekly bounties recently out of boredom. One match we had so many disconnects/quits there were 12 people listed on one team alone pmr, then another game ended up with just 1 person on the other team. Not sure if it's the system, quitters or whatever but that just seems like there's something seriously wrong with it right now.

    • I like PvP. Been playing Bungie PvP since Halo combat evolved. I have helped 16 people get Luna's howl when it was tough. Soloed to legend for my first not forgotten. PvP metas don't bother me too much, I just adapt. I can offer some PvP tips if you'd like them.

Personally I embrace whatever the current cheese loadout is and roll with it. Or run with meme loadouts when playing with my normal clanmates in quickplay for the fun of it. Yes that does happen and that's from someone who doesn't play pve in this game. This game's pvp becomes suprisingly fun when folks let go of the unrealistic notion that it could ever be remotely competetive in any nature. It won't ever be. If the space-magic loadouts aren't enough, the underlaying p2p network model made sure of it when the game was first conceived. Though honestly your troubles in acquiring the pinnacles sound like more fundamental issues. Excluding really high skill brackets, you can make do in average play with some variety in your loadouts as long as you have the fundamental pvp skillsets down. Mechanical aim, movement, positioning and gamesense as in what everybody else in the lobby's doing and about to do and adjusting yourself accordingly. As long as these are covered to a degree, all the pinnacle pvp weapons are acquirable without overwhelming time-investment. And I mean this in good faith, your problems sound less like issues with the certain weapon archetype's viability in the sandbox and more like flaws in the above mentioned personal general pvp FPS skillsets.

Very lucky then you joined with in the last 8 months. Glory untill 2100 cant decay and you cant be de-ranked either. This was not always the case. A great deal use to suffer getting the pinnacle weapons from crucible. They added a series of changes to benefit just your self proclaimed archtype so its a guarantee now atleast via not being able to be deranked till 2100. Glad to see this change benefited who it was targeted at and was one of the few PvP changes that Bungie implemented that really did work out for the community and a pat on the back for the devs. Believe it or not what you describe I see as a success story. Most of what you talk about are newer additions that use to be well.... more "you must be this 1337 to ride this ride." Back in the beginning of forsaken till jokers wild getting 2100 was in the minority & the old venerable hands will tell you recluse use to be semi-rare and highly coveted for raids. Glad you read my input and more or less responded. & I would listen to your friends about your skill bandwidth. You dont cheat, you dont pay for recoveries already makes you better then 30% of the community right their. Id suggest you go pick up the redrix or NF chain if you want to get better. Sure Not Forgotten you might see as a moon shot. But it will make you a better player. Just dont look at the steps or you might call me a mad man for suggesting it. Which I stress you dont need to complete, but the quests do push you to increase your ability. When I first started not forgotten and unbroken were pipe dreams, now I'd probably marry my Not Forgotten if it got any smarter and I am Unbroken next season. And thoes quests really pushed me to become better.

        • My experience is up and down on console. For competitive I either match against potatoes or god tier players. As someone with a .7 KD most of my matches consist of people better than me. There is also no insentive to play the normal crucible modes. We have had the same armor sets and weapons for several years now.

        • Connections are terrible. Classes are horribly imbalanced. Bungie does little to manage the cheaters. It has, at its heart, a good experience. I like it and enjoy my time but these three issues erode my optimism.

        • In Destiny if you wanted Thorn , Bad juju, Invective shotgun you needed to play PVP. I like PvP now it’s a game play to have fun and don’t take it seriously. Not good enough for Trials plus I usually run solo.

        • I play a shit load of crucible. its not bad for the most part you got a few outliers that tilt games, wards manly right now but they are skill gap intensive to say the least. If you ever get to the top brackets you will rage vs the immune to damage titan. All that aside, if you gave crucible a chance this season I can see why you would have that answer. It was a total mess this season. I still refuse to play trials, and at the start of the season cheating was incredibility rampant even in comp. I gave up on week 3 doing the typical grind to 5500, it was that bad. I jumped back in on week 10 and finished the grind. Also keep in mind if it was this season when you gave pvp a try besides the early season cheating spike you are playing vs a solidified meta, and a highly developed one at that. Deff not the time for a self proclaimed novice, and it will be the same deal next season as well. I do ask you give season 12 pvp a try though when we get their. the meta will be shaken up and you might have more fun.

          • The only competitive shooter games that I've ever liked are Titanfall (1&2) and Desiny ONE's Crucible. I find most other shooters lack enough depth of play to hold my attention for any length of time. I think Titanfall and Destiny 1 were different because there is that same MOBA-like element to game play that you have in Overwatch that demands a level of thoughtfulness (in managing unbalanced interactions) that made the game play interesting and kept me involved for much longer than I normally give comp shooters. Respawn leaned INTO that aspect of its nature....Bungie tried to REMOVE that aspect of its play and tried to turn D2's Crucible into an augmented mobility version of Halo. In my more cynical moments I refer to D2 Crucible as "Halo 5.5". As such I basically don't play D2 Crucible unless there is something in there loot-wise or quest-wise that requires me to play it. Then when I'm done, I leave and dont' go back. Which is sad, because I REALLY used to love D1's Crucible and would love to grind Iron Banner for hours. Now Iron Banner---and Trials---are both casualties of Bungie's inability to create a PVP experience that is fresh and relevant in 2020. As both players and Bungie try to turn this game's PVP into something it can NEVER be as long as it shares the same sandbox with a loot-game on the PVE side.

          • I enjoy pvp, simply because I don’t care about winning or losing or some precious kd/kids number on some website. I play pvp for fun. I might sweat and curse at a loss but after the match? I chuckle and move on. Just like a strike, who cares afterwards? Because..why does it matter? Unless you’re making a career out of the game, your stats are meaningless. Except to those hoity-toity LFG people who have requirements.
