So sounds like you committed the fatal error of expecting one game that is not a sequel to be just like that other game.
Sekiro has the smoothest combat of any game I have ever touched. No contest. I cracked open good ole bloodborne after playing sekiro and felt like I was drunk driving an aircraft carrier.
It sounds to me that you never made it to the first boss, all bosses save a few have cutscenes. All bosses however drop memories that you use to upgrade attack power.
On another note. In the dilapidated temple, to the left is a guy who exists for the sole purpose of practicing the sword play.
But it sounds that exhibit a is too far up exhibit b for you to give sekiro another go. You really should. It is the best video game I have ever played.

I too love games that have no real sense of progression to be my favorite games ever. Feeling empty after tackling a huge hurdle plus not having meaningful leveling, play style orientation, no customization, no new weapons, and no soul (pun intended) that it’s predecessors had is exactly what I look for in a game It doesn’t need to be the same game, it needs to be enjoyable and sekiro is not. Combat is the most frustrating combat I’ve experienced in quite a while. Having a game streamlined and forcing you to play a specific play style that you don’t like wouldn’t exactly give you confidence to play it again now would it I had this game permanently removed from my account by steam, refund or no refund due to their -godwinslaw!- refund policy. Don’t give a shit about plying it again
