Is Horizon Zero Dawn as generic as Ubisoft's open world games?

I'm thinking of buying it, but from the gameplay trailers I've watched it's looks more or less generic (explore, climb, kill mechanic dino, a bit of story, repeat). Makes me worried it's as generic as Ubisoft's open world games (Far Cry, AC). Far Cry bores the shit out of me and the last AC game I played (Origins) bored me after only a few days.

  • Excellent game. Stick with it. The story is definitely a bit wow I did guess a major story thing quite early. Got it at launch. But then guerilla is one of my favourite games studio.

  • Well yes is follows the same principles but it is done much better. The world and its characters are more intresting than any of Ubies ones.

It is absolutely a formulaic open world game. Some of the collectibles and optional content are genuinely worthwhile, like the power armor and cauldrons, but most of it still just serves to clutter the map like an Assassin's Creed game.
Oh, and there is lots of crafting for upgrades.
Most people find the story as a drawing point. I think the setting is fantastic, and the lore was good. The actual plot is full of uninteresting characters, though, and I find weak characters to be the most damning thing to any story. Combat is the best part of the game, in my opinion. You really feel the machine's power, and you have to prepare to fight the deadliest. There's real depth involved - you can just hit Stryders with your spear, but you might want to lay traps to stun a Thunderjaw and tear off it's armor and weapons.

  • Get it. It's an awesome game. One of my favorites of this generation.

  • No. Get it, it’s awesome. It has an expansive skill tree, humor and emotion. I nearly cried at times. It’s how the shadow of Mordor games should have been, in my opinion. Not a lot of gore, since you fight mainly robots. The dlc is short, but still cool. It’s altogether a beautiful game, with an awesome photo mode.

  • Everyone told me the combat was great, but to me it was use detective mode and shoot the weak spot. Some enemies had awkward weak spots to spice it up. Just another open world game in which I felt like I was just running errands. What really made me put it down was that I felt like I was in a cutscenr every 5 minutes, and the flood of boring stealth segments. Most people seem to like it, though, so it probably gets better I guess?

  • The combat is nothing like the Ubisoft games. It’s more like monster hunter or something. You have to use the right arrow type and find the weak spots on the robots armor. The combat is really fun and much better than Ubisoft games (in my opinion). Also the story is really good - a real mystery that keeps you hooked right to the end. Like all open world games though it does have a fair bit of open world filler - clearing bandit camps, collecting trinkets, fetch quests etc. So it does have that in common with Ubisoft games. In my opinion HZD is much better than most Ubisoft games. I highly recommend it.

  • Hunting and trapping giant robot dinosaurs looks "generic" to you? I'm fascinated to learn what you think is non-generic.

The best open world game this generation. Combat is always challenging unless you grab all the crafting materials all the time, but then that’s just the game rewarding you for your efforts. This is coming from someone who hates 99.9% of Ubisoft games. EDIT: One thing I will add, is that there is no aim assist at all, so you can’t just let the game play itself for you. I also recommend on playing on at least hard.

    • Its open world isn’t anything to write home about. But, its combat is really fun, and its story is really good. It’s been too lomg for me to go in detail, though, sorry.

      • I mean, idk how generic it is to kill mechanic dino, but why not just watch some initial playthroughs instead of just trailers? Might give you a better idea of what to expect. The two things that stood out to me were the story and mechanic dino killing. The story and universe are engaging, and it's fun to learn about them through discoverables as well as gameplay. And the actual dino killing is varied enough that it feels like a genuine accomplishment to strategize and bring down the bigger ones. Overall probably one of my favorite games of this console cycle, but obviously just my opinion.
