To those who watch anime; do you prefer English Sub or Dub?

English Dub

It depends on the Anime

Self explanatory. Which do you prefer and why? I prefer Dub myself. That way I don’t have to read, I can just listen. Plus, some English Dub is hilarious. What about you?

  • I don’t watch anime much, but if it’s Jojo, Sub is the only way to go for the memes.

  • The scripting for the dub sometimes makes my ears bleed while the voice actors just kind of have to deal with it, at least that's what I think. Most recently this very thought process came up while watching Canon busters on netflix. I'm thinking I should just watch it in sub but First Impressions are everything. If anyone here can verify my thoughts I'll give it another chance.

  • I don’t like how the girl characters always sound like they’re in rape porno.

  • I prefer sub. The translations tend to be better, and I feel like (most of the time) the Japanese voices match the characters better. For example, everyone always talks about how FMA has a really good dub (and it does), but I can't stand Ed's voice because he sounds like he's going through puberty throughout the entire show. Japanese Ed sounds older, but not totally adult. There are some shows that are an exception; Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Dragon Ball Z, any Ghibli movie, and My Hero Academia (minus Mineta, -blam!- Mineta) all come to mind.

Overall, I prefer sub, unless they did a damn good job on the dub.

Sub. I don’t watch all that much anime, but Japanese is a cool language and sort of entrancing to listen to

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again:
Doesn't matter for me as long as I find the voice performance and experience in the anime great. Sometimes I'll go for sub, another for dub. It's sickening when anime elitists will give you shit just because you'll watch anime in a language other than Japanese (mostly English), when they should understand that even the Japanese flaw in voice performance. Besides, no one put them in charge of who's considered a real anime fan and who's not. In the end, watch anime in whatever way makes you comfortable.
• It depends on the Anime I suppose. What version I watch first also kind of informs my opinion. Once you’ve gotten used to certain cast of characters sounding a particular way, it’s hard to hear them being voiced by someone else. So, with a lot of shows from my youth ( Cowboy BeBop, Trigun, Evangelion, Full Metal Alchemist, Dragonball Z, etc ), I’m used to the English dub performances, and everything else sound weird. A lot of the more modern show that I watch though are strictly subtitled. While we are on the subject of Evangelion, I really, really HATE what Netflix did with English dub of that show. I grew watching that show, and the original English dub performances are so iconic that it turned a lot of its voice actors into house hold names ( in the anime industry ). For me to watch that show again on Netflix, and hear different voices and performances coming out of those characters mouths, it just feels very, very wrong. It’s very similar to the general public’s reaction to Crystal Dynamics Avengers game was shown at E3.

  • Some anime are good dubbed, like Code Geass or Hellsing, but there are some that English voice actors cant ever match, like JoJo and the iconic MUDA’s or ORA’s it just sounds stupid dubbed.

    • Dub for me all that time on that rare occasion that I find one I like. Love bumping into J. Michael Tatum and Christopher Sabat's voice work. Recently got done with Overlord and thoroughly enjoyed it!

    • Most of the time sub, but on the rare occasion dub. Ghost Stories for example. Dubs are just often bad, which is why I prefer sub.

    • I don't watch a lot of anime, and all I have watched is sub, but if the dub is well done, I would have no problem with it. but if it is a bad dub, I'd just opt for subtitles

    • While I don't watch anime, I prefer foreign movies to have subtitles, the dubs are just bad at conveying the emotion and message and are just ridiculous most of the time.

    • Kinda depends on the anime. I typically watch sub, but there are exceptions in which I'll watch dub (that exception usually being that a main or prominent character has an annoying -blam!-ing voice).

    • Depends on the anime. I love Prison School and JoJo's Bizarre adventure's dubs, but I couldn't stand Amagi Park or Charlotte's dubs.

      • I prefer Sub overall, but some of the dub work is downright hysterical. I was watching 3x3 Eyes on vhs, awhile ago on a dub and it was very funny in places. Then a year later I got it on DVD sub, funny thing is 90% of the scenes in the dub weren't supposed to be funny.
