Calling It: Time-Gating is Not A "Grind"

In Year One of Destiny, a player had access to every activity to prepare for a single end-game activity, which was the Raid. Legendary and Exotic drops were actually rare occurrences, which meant that a player would have to do everything in the game, including Nightfalls, to gear up for the Raid. This meant that there was incentive in every aspect of D1 to continue playing every day. This persisted throughout the rest of D1's content. With each expansion added, there was a new challenge to aspire to. To compensate, they increased the reward rate, all to maintain the flow and rhythm of being able to play what you liked in order to prepare for those end-game activities. By the Age of Triumph, everyone was able to play Destiny the amount they wanted to play and be rewarded for it, whether if you were a casual who frequented Patrol Zones or a hardcore Raid nut who solos Hard Crota three times a day. It was and still is an entirely inclusive game that anyone can pick up, play and enjoy. D2 is not that game. At first, even when CoO came out, that inclusiveness was still there. People could play as much or as little as they wanted and be rewarded for it. However, the way that Bungie designed D2 did something to the balance that D1 had achieved. Instead of trying to keep players interested in the gameplay with the potential to get stronger gear from random drops, they created the Milestone system. Now, all players have to do is complete the gameplay checklist every Tuesday/Wednesday and they are done for the week. This is where the true problem lies for Destiny 2. There is no real grind in this game, not like it was before. None of the end-game activities aside from Trials provide worthwhile loot, but even that activity drops the ball. Not only that, but Warmind has actually made the problem worse. I am all for challenges, sure. Escalation Protocol is tough, but it is a good tough. However, the changes to the reward system have now shifted our focus to completing these Milestones and away from actually playing and enjoying the game as it is. The inclusiveness and the draw to play Destiny 2 every day is no longer there, because there's nothing rewarding about any length of gameplay in this game. By now, you're probably thinking, "Well, what about Redrix, Worldline, Polaris and Sleeper?" What about them? While they are a good step towards D1's style of grinding, why weren't all the other Legendaries or Exotics like that? For the first time in a while, I've realised that none of the rewards this game has to offer mean anything. At all. It came to me when I looked at the Exotic Collections on the Destiny app and saw that I have EVERY piece of Exotic Titan Armor. In D1, I barely had half of that. While I still enjoy Destiny 2's gameplay immensely, it's finally hit that point where I feel no reason to play after I decrypt the last Luminous Engram that I am able to get. Which sucks, because I want to keep playing... but there's no point. :/
TL;DR Version: Destiny 2 does not have a grind, it is now a one-day checklist game with rewards that mean jack shit to anyone.

Moderator edit: This thread has been moved to #Feedback forum so that other Destiny players can weigh in.  See Cozmo's thread here for more information about the #Feedback tag and its uses. • I don't think you are wrong with your comments, and as someone who played - and raided - on xbox 1 - for a good amount of time - D1 was fun because there were reasons to play like you said, D2 lacks that, the milestone system is OK to have as it gives an "extra" bonus the real thing that the game is lacking though, is content, but its the same wash and repeat as D1 was remember how boring original Destiny was? even with Crota and chasing bugged Crux of Crota drop and so on? we never got the same, original, Queen's event either, why not? D1 really didn't shine until Taken King. But with Taken King something else happened - added "bulltet sponges", and they switched from Raid mode that required actual team work and timing (lets ignore cheese tactics) - to jumping puzzles … which, while can be a fun activity in the raid … are not for people who are limited on time and just want stuff done these Milestones and actual rewards from Nightfall and just regular Crucible play are all great and allow people to gear up faster but the game simply lacks content, there is nothing to do, any activity I do I am behind a wall where even exotics I get right now from 3 of Coins are all lvl 348 at most (and I've gotten multiples) the other thing is, community, Destiny 2 is a beautiful game, the ACTUAL game play - skills/supers - are ALL fun to use - what is NOT fun are insane "modifiers" that they put along with REALLY hard to kill/unflinching mobs and community, when I heard that Destiny 2 was going to be out on PC, I said "this is it, final straw, no reason to stay on console" - but as toxic as X1 community could get to do certain activities - PC version of D2 simply lacks playerbase people like me who moved to PC because this was just the move that made sense now, got bored, because after SO many years of polishing Destiny 1 we got A LOT at the very end of it - and then Bungie drops Destiny 2 in the same condition as original Destiny 1 - which makes NO sense and so I haven't played Destiny 2 in a while, went to try other MMO's I haven't before, and I come back for DLC - and I literally run quick story - and hit a wall with my item level cant get past 353 this is literally #forever29 all over again and Bungie knows this, and once again "we are working on it", "please give us feedback", and so on, same recycled replies, and so again, we wait until we get "more" of the "gated" content that they held back
