FEMA is swamped and they aren't going to be able to fix this shit. The situation in Puerto Rico was dire for decades before the storm, you think we can snap our fingers, dump some money on them and it'll all be fixed? Get real. The sad thing is how quickly it dawned on the citizens how absolutely -blam!-ed they are. They were being told FEMA would swoop in and rebuild everything. That's never been FEMA's job. Houses that aren't even in the current resident's name (they would keep grandpa's name on the deed as a house went through the generations) cannot be covered. People in villages thought they'd be fine, just talk to FEMA get a check in the mail and rebuild instead they get nothing. And the ones who do have documentation aren't going to get fully reimbursed, not even close. They're lucky if the money they get covers the roof over their head. That's not even scratching the surface of the current issue. PR has issues with government corruption, their economy stinks, their best and brightest all leave for the mainland. They've been hurting, this situation just launched them from the frying pan straight into the fire.

  • They're AMERICANS. ...and we're abandoning them after a major disaster. Are we cutting off aid to Houston too? Or just to brown people??

Which brings us to the absurdity of the politics of "whiteness". The only Hispanics that are true "ethnic whites"...that is "ethnic Europeans"....are people who are of (more or less) direct Spanish or Portuguese descent. Or are more modern immigrants, like a colleague of mine who is from Argentina but is ethnically Italian. (I dont' ask....) Fact is that---with the African slave trade and plantation system of agriculture having been just as prevalent in Latin American and the Caribbean as it was in North America----Hispanics are in reality an admixture of Spanish, Portuguese, West African, and Meso-American "Indian" of varying degrees. Which results in people who are---in fact---quite brown. https://media1.s-nbcnews.com/i/MSNBC/Components/Video/201709/d_ov_PR_Recovery_170921.jpg

  • So if you aren't 100% white, you're brown. Good to know you're a racist.

If you're brown, your brown...... ..and if you're not ethnically European, you are not white in the eyes of this country. And if you entertain that fantasy that you are....prepare to be very rudely reminded at some point that you aren't. Again, I love it how behaving in racists ways isn't really racism. Just pointing out the racial and ethnic biases of this society is in the minds of Conservatives. "Don't see. Don't speak. Don't feel. Don't think. Because Reality is whatever WE say it is." No....it isn't. Reality is Reality. The Reality is that anyone whose family has been here for more than a few generations----and isn't living in some sort of ethnic enclave----isn't "100%" anything. Which---again---shows the absurdity of the politics of whiteness....and that it is about who does and doesn't get to have power...and to keep those with common economic and class-based cause DIVIDED and fighting among themselves for the crumbs that fall from the tables of the wealthy....and prevent them from uniting and demanding their fair share of this nation's wealth. "......And as the noted historian, C. Vann Woodward, in his book, The Strange Career of Jim Crow, clearly points out, the segregation of the races was really a political stratagem employed by the emerging Bourbon interests in the South to keep the southern masses divided and southern labor the cheapest in the land. You see, it was a simple thing to keep the poor white masses working for near-starvation wages in the years that followed the Civil War. Why, if the poor white plantation or mill worker became dissatisfied with his low wages, the plantation or mill owner would merely threaten to fire him and hire former Negro slaves and pay him even less. Thus, the southern wage level was kept almost unbearably low. Toward the end of the Reconstruction era, something very significant happened. (Listen to him) That is what was known as the Populist Movement. (Speak, sir) The leaders of this movement began awakening the poor white masses (Yes, sir) and the former Negro slaves to the fact that they were being fleeced by the emerging Bourbon interests. Not only that, but they began uniting the Negro and white masses (Yeah) into a voting bloc that threatened to drive the Bourbon interests from the command posts of political power in the South. To meet this threat, the southern aristocracy began immediately to engineer this development of a segregated society. (Right) I want you to follow me through here because this is very important to see the roots of racism and the denial of the right to vote. Through their control of mass media, they revised the doctrine of white supremacy. They saturated the thinking of the poor white masses with it, (Yes) thus clouding their minds to the real issue involved in the Populist Movement. They then directed the placement on the books of the South of laws that made it a crime for Negroes and whites to come together as equals at any level. (Yes, sir) And that did it. That crippled and eventually destroyed the Populist Movement of the nineteenth century. If it may be said of the slavery era that the white man took the world and gave the Negro Jesus, then it may be said of the Reconstruction era that the southern aristocracy took the world and gave the poor white man Jim Crow. (Yes, sir) He gave him Jim Crow. (Uh huh) And when his wrinkled stomach cried out for the food that his empty pockets could not provide, (Yes, sir) he ate Jim Crow, a psychological bird that told him that no matter how bad off he was, at least he was a white man, better than the black man. (Right sir) And he ate Jim Crow. (Uh huh) And when his undernourished children cried out for the necessities that his low wages could not provide, he showed them the Jim Crow signs on the buses and in the stores, on the streets and in the public buildings. (Yes, sir) And his children, too, learned to feed upon Jim Crow, (Speak) their last outpost of psychological oblivion. (Yes, sir)" -----Martin Luther King, Jr. Selma. 1965 Fifty-two years later that same class-based con-game is still going on.

  • Complete non-sequitur. But I love how if you're a minority in America how quick people are to try to re-interpret Reality for you. Reality is Reality. What is subjective is the tiny corner of it that each of us is personally aware of. Like the Five Blind Men Groping at the Elephant of Truth. The Elephant is real.....what is subjective is how much of the Beast each of the blind men is capable of perceiving...and what ANGLE they are precieving it from.

  • My point is that Europeans came to dominate the world through military superiority. But---because the winners get to write the history books---its been retconned into a moral and intellectual superiority in order to justify that dominance. Not.

Racism isn’t the prejudicial Elephant in The Living Room. Only refusing to participate in the conspiracy of silence where we all pretend not to see the Beast while we all walk around it.

  • I don't know, this idea that you and a lot of people I've listened to on the left have where everything that happens is somehow racist is getting pretty old, almost as old as people on the right I listen to talk about how racism no longer exists (btw, both are idiotic stances). Nothing wrong with pointing out racism when there's actually racism, but taking this issue (and honestly most issues) and trying to make it about race is ridiculous. You can criticize the move without trying to jam a false claim of racism in.

I'm not saying "everything" is racially motivated. I'm saying THIS is. I will turn 50 shortly, and I have NEVER seen our Government cut off disaster relief aid to AMERICANS this quickly after a disaster of this magnitude. NEVER. So it begs the question, "What's different?" What's different is that this disaster has struck an American Territory, where the population is overwhelmingly Hispanic.... ...and we have a Federal Government that is currently being led by an person who doesn't even bother to even HIDE his contempt for people of color. FFS he hosted a reception to honor the Navajo Code Talkers as heroes, and "thinks" its appropriate to refer to one of his political rivals (and critics...-blam!-ing narcissist) as "Pocahontas". To their FACES. Another disgrace I haven't seen (from a POTUS) in my nearly 50 years of life. You could literally see the shock and disbelief on their faces. To their credit, they chose to act like the adults...and heroes....they were in the face of that man's ignorance, bigotry, and psychopathology.

  • So to your first point, I'll plead ignorance. I've looked around for timelines about emergency relief and I'm not finding anything that proves or disproves what you're saying. What I have read talks about the large amount of food and water that FEMA has on the ground in PR which they are handing over to PR emergency services as well as the Red Cross and others to distribute so even if they cut off the flow, the area will be taken care of for a quite while. I'm not saying that's ideal or even a decent plan, but it's not nearly as bad as you're making it out to be. As far as trump goes, he's an idiot. The pocahontas "joke" was a bad joke in poor taste, but calling it racist is a stretch. I personally find it worse that the target of his joke lied about her heritage in order to secure a minority job at a university and continued the lie even after it had been proven she had zero native american heritage, but hey if you think making fun of said person is racist then to each their own I guess. Honestly, with trump in general I think the saying "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" works best.

  • 1. Are you kidding me? What are "PR emergency services" going to work with? That Hurricane "bombed" the Island back into the pre-industrial age....and as other posters have stated that infrastructure has not yet been restored. 2. PR is an island with a population that is less than the Greater Boston area. If a storm came through that KNOCKED Boston flat...would we abandon them after not even 5 MONTHS...at both the state and Federal level and basically say "-blam!- you....Your on your own now?" Figure it out on your own Boston....even though 80% of your city still isn't working? 3. No it isn't a stretch to call what he did racist. Because it was a BLANTANTLY racist comment. The same as calling an African-American woman who is visibly angry "S*pphire". (Word of advice. Don't do it if you plan on making it out of that room with your teeth in your mouth) Its an insult rooted in an ugly racial stereotype. The only defence Trump has would be if this were an uncharacteristic faux pas committed out of genuine ignorance. But I think we know that is not the case with the Birther-in-Chief. Because bigotry is the FIRST thing he reaches for in attacking people. Even going as far as to "suggest" that Sen. Gilebrand was willing to exchange sexual favors for campaign contributions. 4. I'm aware of the story of Sen. Warren and her heritage....and I accept her version of events. Birth-record keeping for people of color in this country---especially African-Americans and Native-Americans is EXTREMELY poor. So there are many of us---including myself---who have very unclear notions of exactly what are family lineage is beyond family stories. ...and when you do go back and try to compare those stories with the records that actually exist there will be gaps, errors and inconsistencies. 5. The accusation that she lied IS a lie....a ugly vicious one at that...and making fun of her in front of other Native Americans with a racial slur IS racist. And if you can't see that, then I feel sorry for you. 6. No one's that stupid. Hanlon's Razor does not apply here. Occam's Razor does. If someone is regularly making stupid, racists and sexists comments, then the simplest...and most likely correct....explanation is that the man is a stupid racist and sexist.
