#Halo

Honestly, was it wrong of me to do this?

I work at GameStop and today a Latino woman and her son came in. The son (who looked like he was around 13 or 14 years old) spoke English fine but the woman had very broken English. What I could make out from her is that she wanted to pre-order Halo Reach for her son. I was very concerned because she might not realize what kind of violence and language she would be exposing her son to so I had my other GameStop employee (his name is Ricardo, speaks Spanish and English) warn her about the game's violence in Spanish and she was able to understand and then scolded her son for trying to get such a game. Did I do the right thing?

 • Honestly I would have to say yes. When a kid is too young to order the game on their own it's important that the parent who's buying it for them knows just what they're getting. After you inform them it's their choice whether they buy their child the game or not. It's not your fault if they don't want their kid to have it.

 • As a 14 year old myself I think you did the right thing. Personally, i'd be upset, but honestly most people at this age are immature and he'll just probably end up getting it another way.

 •
Wow, learn to read. What has the education system come to these days?
what I'm saying is that he shouldn't have prevented the kid from buying the game, that the ESRB overreacted on and decided to make it M for having Blood and violence. the kid will probably go grab black ops later and from what I've seen of WaW, that has so many F bombs and gore scenes the battlefield is basically a pool of blood. and to those saying "ONE LEWSSS SQUEKIR UAY!!" there is a mute button you know.
my friend I agree the ESRB overreacted I've seen a T game rated T for blood, gore and violence where aliens are sliced in half by a knife (the game is Star Wars Republic Commando) but i guess the ESRB is a little stereotypic... also the rest of the GamStop employies would have done the same thing. also he could have lost his job had you read the posts above.
from what I've seen, if it has star wars in the title, ESRB says "T" if it has Halo or any other game known to have M in it, ESRB rushes to make it M.
Maybe it wasn't the ESRB's fault, maybe Bungie wanted to make sure it was rated M. I know a lot of people who would overreact on the forums if the game was rated T for Teen, saying that Halo has become kid friendly and stuff. but yeah I think you did the right thing. Your job was to make sure that the mother of the 12 year old knew what the ESRB rating meant, and you did that. If the mother overreacted then it's not your fault. EDIT: lol sorry for the double quote taking up half of the page.
I am pretty sure the ESRB is not at fault by any stretch of the word. I think a bunch of angry 11 year old are mad because they aren't able to buy the game. The ESRB did it's job, the game is based on killing aliens in campaign, and then going into multi-player and killing over and over again. Key word, killing. Now I don't believe that games have caused a bad society, but I think that they could have if the ESRB hadn't started to rate games and keep an eye on what the youth is doing and playing. So, please stop saying that the ESRB is to blame here. Just wait until you turn 17 and enjoy it then. At that point you will be able to buy the game yourself instead of having mommy and daddy come with you to gamestop.

 • I say good move. And not just because it keeps a little kid off of Halo. Anyway, I don't think kids should have the right to get a mature game like that without any parental consent until at least 15 or 16. Not hating on young'uns here, just saying that there's a reason these games can only be bought by 17+ people...

 •
Posted by: Chozo Knight If I were in your shoes I would probably feel terrible too. I wouldn't worry about it too much though. The little boy probably didn't know what he was trying to buy anyway. And besides, do we really need anymore 12 year olds playing Halo? But who knows, maybe the mother felt embarrased when she realized that the game is not necessarily for kids and she overreacted. The whole situation is awkward, but kids are tough he'll get over it in no time... that or he will become emo and start cutting himself. Either way it's not your problem anymore :D
wow are you serious?,if the kid was even 10 years old he still would've known what halo was, you're underestimating what kids know about these days,Ive been playing halo since i was 4 (and i fell in love btw),the OP did in fact do his job but he crushed the kids dream,i would probably put you in my "deaths in April 06 2024" list, dont ask.everyone in CWSOTD has one.dont ask again...Cause you probably dont know what that is,i should stop...lol JK well back on Topic:As for the people who are say "THATS ONE LESS ANNOYING KID IN HALO" should just shut up,You might not have noticed but there is VERY large amount of underage mature gamers on halo,The only difference is we are quiet and unnoticed, but immature kids are the idiots that are always screaming in the mic,Making themselves stand out more,And creates a stereotype, because now I can be titled as a squeaker just for not being born in 1990 so please stop being lazy and just use the Great O'Mighty mute feature,Its there for a reason [Edited on 09.09.2010 6:13 PM PDT]

 • Don't know, you should warn parents about mature games but halo has always been more ... comical, than other games. I mean with halo you're like "Why didn't I punch him?" and with CoD for instance you're like "WHY DIDN'T MY KNIFE SQUERE HIM! BLOOD CAME OUT! GOD DAMN! *gets out knife* Hey mom, come here a minute ..." so I'm not sure. Technically you did,if there was the least bit of chance that kid is unstable there could be ... negative, side effects to him owning a game like halo, the game might not take itself seriously but with stuff like assassinations ... too risky, you did the right thing. If the parent believes it's not safe for the child then chances are it isn't. With Mature games unless the parents watch the child play them and possibly even play with them then they shouldn't buy them,if the mother didn't even know what game it is then it's better off he didn't get it.

 • I'm 12, but i usually either ignore the language, or sometimes choose the game option to remove it. About the gorey stuff, we're boys, what, are we supposed to play viva pinata or something? come on, boys will be boys, and boys will like gore. I honestly don't talk, nor listen, during online play, so you guys won't have to deal with me. About the kid though, he should have told his mom about the stuff in the game, my mom lets me play it, but if she hears me say any words in those games, *slap*. Although, i do get straight A's, honor roll, band, blah blah blah. If it were some loser who fails school, cusses, and is sincerely hateful to people, i would have told the mom no. i think you did the right thing, because anytime i turn my chat volume up, there's bound to be some little kid humming and going on and on about nothing. Thank you, for sparing my ears of one more mini-troll.
