Honestly, was it wrong of me to do this?

I work at GameStop and today a Latino woman and her son came in. The son (who looked like he was around 13 or 14 years old) spoke English fine but the woman had very broken English. What I could make out from her is that she wanted to pre-order Halo Reach for her son. I was very concerned because she might not realize what kind of violence and language she would be exposing her son to so I had my other GameStop employee (his name is Ricardo, speaks Spanish and English) warn her about the game's violence in Spanish and she was able to understand and then scolded her son for trying to get such a game. Did I do the right thing?

 • great, now she wont find out about Black Ops then the kid will get Black Ops instead of Reach! nice going... but u kinda did the right thing... even though i think the Rating thing is stupid, it is up to the parent, but if the parent finds out about Reach but not Black Ops, was this a win? a lose? or a continous battle? and thus, Black Ops wins... pat yourself on the back?

 • Yes: He decieved his mom, and his parents have to worry about what he get's into. I'm pretty young, I guess... I'm allowed. My local gamestop employees warn my father (Only one who has an Xbox, Dumb divorce.) But, yeah, I guess..

 • I love how my parents let me play and watch what i want... as long as I did't get into any bad habits that you see and guess what? I haven't, they don't even believen grounding and they've never gotten mad at me like ever, maybe annoyed but hey that's what families do eh? lol

 • You were communicating full information about a product to the customer who'd actually be buying it. That's simply ethical business practices, plain as you get. Did the right thing. If the kid had the money and was old enough to get it himself, it'd be his issue. But since he's not, it's hers.

 • Your going to get 2 answers. Teenagers and kids are going to say no, you should have let the kid get the game. Halo isn't even that mature The you will have your overprotective, rule strict older adults that will say you did the right thing because he is too young. Personally im 17, the minimum age to play. But i started Halo at 14, and im sure at least 70% of people played Halo before they were 17. [Edited on 09.09.2010 5:32 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: SWAT Theory True...but you ARE plunging a sword or knife into/through a person though, so technically "gore" is still in :P
the ESRB describes "gore" as "mutilation of body parts" like the other halo's had gore because the flood burst into pieces. but ODST didn't because it didn't have the flood.

 • Not to mention Gamestop policies states that you have to inform the parents about ratings. So you did the right thing, You did your job that you get paid for. Had you not you would have been at a loss and possibly in trouble from upper management. I've seen two co-workers fired over negligence.

What has the education system come to these days?
what I'm saying is that he shouldn't have prevented the kid from buying the game, that the ESRB overreacted on and decided to make it M for having Blood and violence. the kid will probably go grab black ops later and from what I've seen of WaW, that has so many F bombs and gore scenes the battlefield is basically a pool of blood. and to those saying "ONE LEWSSS SQUEKIR UAY!!" there is a mute button you know.

 •
Posted by: windtalker006 The U.S. doesn't have a national language English is just the most used language
The nations creators spoke english... Hell my great grandfather had to learn english after only knowing italian for 20 years. I say we remove this spanish on everything bull-blam!-. You want to put more than one language on something you should have to put em all. So i should have to learn english if i only know italian but i wouldn't if i spoke spanish. Its a load of crap.

The kid obviously didn't tell his mother the meaning of the rating.
Maybe she should learn the country's national language, you know english?
that is a very ignorant statement she spoke BROKEN english which means she has begun/tried to. Most parents are clueless about the rating system so someone who has trouble comprehending the language will definitely have trouble with the system. Great move OP!
