#Halo

Honestly, was it wrong of me to do this?

I work at GameStop and today a Latino woman and her son came in. The son (who looked like he was around 13 or 14 years old) spoke English fine but the woman had very broken English. What I could make out from her is that she wanted to pre-order Halo Reach for her son. I was very concerned because she might not realize what kind of violence and language she would be exposing her son to so I had my other GameStop employee (his name is Ricardo, speaks Spanish and English) warn her about the game's violence in Spanish and she was able to understand and then scolded her son for trying to get such a game. Did I do the right thing?

Did I do the right thing?
Actually, you did the right thing. Sure you rained on the kid's parade, but oh well. I was in a Gamestop one time when another kids was trying to rope his Mom into buying him GTA: San Andres. He had her convinced until they asked the guy behind the counter to get a copy. When he got the game he asked who it was for, and when he found out that it was for the kid with her, he informed her about the JUST the hookers in the game. That sealed the deal, they left without the game. That being said, I have never understood why Halo is rated "M". I know it's a FPS, but you are shooting aliens with bright colors for blood. And I have never heard the language get out of control in a Halo game. No f-bombs, no s-words, no nudity (no Cortana doesn't count). You pretty much get all the language that is allowed by the FCC on TV. So yeah, good job helping out a parent. [Edited on 09.09.2010 10:25 PM PDT]

 • It wasn't your fault. She obviously was a little overprotective and you had no way of explaining every detail.

 • my parents have been letting me play violent video games since I was 6, I played Doom, Mortal Kombat, Golden eye, and got halo when I was halo since it came out. I turned out pretty good. I had a load of violent shooters and such. and my folks didn't care. hell my dad used to play MK with me lol But now that i'm 18 i really don't care I can get it if I want without approval. and before you start, i didn't get to play Halo 2 online till I was 14. and even then I already had a deep voice. • not cool man, the swearing is minimal at best and the same goes for the violence. plus if mom can't speak english to understand what she is buying, TOO BAD. this is America, we speak english here. plus you just nerd -blam!- blocked some poor little mexican kid, how'd you feel in his position? and finally you should never talk someone out of a sale...you are why the economy is in the dump right now, i hope you feel good about letting down America you commie bastard! lol [edit] just for the record i'm 25 and all of you guys who are going on about the little annoying kids ruining your game experience, be aware that you guys are probably the ones ruining the experience for everyone else. you are the guys who cry for 5 minutes because someone finished your kill and betray because someone took "your sniper". get over yourselves, you're not better than these kids and you're definitely not more mature. cry about it, but this is the way things are. show that you're actually grown ups and quit crying. like it has been said before there is always the mute buttons, it's not that hard [Edited on 09.09.2010 10:18 PM PDT]

 • I was 10 when I played Halo:CE and I wasn't even close to being a "little kid" from older peers that played with me. If the kid could handle it, no you made a bad move and you took the game "out of his REACH" lol xD but good if he can't handle it.

 •
Posted by: Ten Ousky The game has a M rating for a reason, kids shouldn't play it, not necessarily because it's SOOO violent or Language but kids have school and need to focus their studies. on top of that, they ruin the online experience for others. addendum for this however would be: I'd be okay with Stores selling games to minors, but forbidding mics to minors. nough said.
With your logic then no one should play video games. After your 17 you go to college which is even more important and harder then highschool. Than you get a job which is even more important than college. So good logic there. And don't be an -blam!- the fail safe for mics is called the mute button. stop being arrogant because people who are younger than you should do anything that you do.

 • No, you are right, being 14 myself, I hate it when people say that kids my age are always getting what they want without their parents knowing, in fact, my parents weren't gonna let me (probably, and by the way, I am a fan, but not an obnoxious fanboy) and I told them it was Halo, and they knew I would stay on that game and not bug them for a while so they let me, its all up to the parents and the parents alone, they know ultimatley what their kids are playing unless they are not good parents

So gamestop would not get FINED! for a suggestion. Fact of the matter is they DO! Meaning it is a LAW. Just like traffic violations are laws. You get fined for breaking them. These kids need to stop thinking, because all it does it make them look like a bunch of idiots.

But thats why i like bungie and Halo better, I'm looking for a good story line and multiplayer, not a mini porno like GTA
Regardless, it still has violence in it. As for story line and multiplayer, yes Bungie gets two thumbs up for that. AvP online is just horrid. Did one game ranked, I got pitted against a lvl 43 first game!

 •
Posted by: Manuel M You killed this child's dreams.
Please read before you post things like this. It was his job he had to inform her. They always do when you're buying an M game. But I probably wouldn't have gone out of my way to find someone to translate.

He did the right thing because it is what hes job requires him to do it. I would have stressed that it wasn't that bad and that it was only shooting aliens. Also i would have stressed that she let him play it and she see what it was before denying him the game first. But hell what can i say I'm a 14 year old with mostly the mindset of a 30 year old bachelor. [Edited on 09.09.2010 7:30 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: King Droid
Posted by: w4r3w0lf yes, he was manipulating her to gve him something he shouldent have, shame on him
Ratings are suggestions not laws, therefore, they shouldn't be treated as such.
They are laws. Gamestop isn't permitted to sell an M game to anyone under 17. They can only sell it to someone older. Whether or not someone younger plays it is the persons choice.
