Choppy Frame Stuttering (NOT LOW FPS PROBLEM)

Yes, I have the same issue

Same issue, but in another area/after time

No choppiness after doing steps (post system spec)

Before stutter video #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FXCCGDdia0 After stutter video #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-WHO7NRgF4 Before stutter video #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A-ZJD0zuu8 After stutter video #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71w0JP8BYcM THIS IS NOT A CASE OF LOW FPS. Monitored framerate is NOT dropping during the stutter. The game mostly runs great during combat between 60-144 fps. Silky smooth. I noticed some real annoying stuttering that gradually gets worse over time (very visible when trying to turn your character quickly), but strangely my FPS was still 60+. It would eventually get bad enough to become more than an annoyance and start to affect gameplay quite a bit. I could even go to orbit and my mouse cursor would skip around while moving it around in the menus with my fps as a solid 144. As soon as I restarted the game - BAM perfectly smooth again. Changing any graphics settings (vsync, aim smoothing, fullscreen, etc.) does not fix the bug. Switching drivers (the bug has been around for a year's-worth of driver updates now) - and even completely changing hardware - does not fix the bug. Most people seem to be getting the stutter the worst/fastest from doing public activities. My current theory is that it still has something to do with clan and/or public player list data piling up in the code and not getting properly cleaned out. What sets this bug apart from other stutter bugs?: 1) The stutter gets worse over time. Destiny 2 does not have the frame stutter immediately after starting the game. Noticeable difference after ~30-60 minutes of gameplay. Early on, you might not notice it, but your brain does. 2) You can temporarily fix the stutter by restarting the game. Reportedly, some people get it to reset by returning to orbit... but not always. 3) Not a mouse polling issue. Still occurs with mouse disconnected and playing with only a controller. 4) Framerate does not drop precisely during the micro-stutter, nor after the stutter gets worse. OUTDATED bug reproduction info:
This was initially a reliable way to reproduce the issue, but a lot has changed since then. It is still reproducible via these steps, but the bug is not as suddenly noticeable as it used to be): I have managed to reproduce this choppiness bug every time. I'd be interested in seeing if the exact same thing can be done by others with different rig setups: 1. Start up fresh game 2. Go to Artifact's Edge on Nessus and wait for public event - the Cabal Drill event. 3. AS SOON AS PUBLIC EVENT BEGINS (sky darkens, etc.) the choppiness starts. Only a game restart will fix this. Going back to orbit, or even loading into another area, the strange stuttering persists until game restart. I have noticed the game doing this "dropped frames" thing elsewhere - maybe just over time it gets worse. But this one public event was like night and day when it started.
System info:
BattleTag: Tychoid#1881 Configuration Info CPU: Intel Xeon W3520 @ 2.67GHz GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 4GB RAM: 12GB DDR3 ECC @ 1066MHz Game installed on SSD - in /Program Files/ Run as Administrator Triple monitor setup (144hz monitor main/game fullscreen is center monitor) All settings maxed (Vsync @ 144, Motion blur off, Film grain off, 1920x1080, 100% scaling) Various other settings tried in combination with no change in stutter bug GPU Driver Version: Nvidia 388.00 (thru 399.24) Operating System: Window 10 Pro 64bit (version 1703) No antivirus Possibly related processes: Rainmeter Steam friends list Battle.net friends list DisplayFusion Pro Chrome MSI Afterburner (Turned off with no change) RivaTunerStatisticsServer (Turned off with no change) Tested with and without numerous screen capture softwares (Nvidia/Rivatuner/etc.) Issue Information Destination/Activity: Nessus/Public Event Description: Massive game/frame suttering after public event starts. Continuously doing public events is still the best/fastest way I have found to reproduce this issue. Edit Sept. 7 2018: Still an issue. Have to restart the game every hour or so to reset the stutter. Many people reporting it being worse since Forsaken (more active clan & player lists aggravating the issue?) Edit March 7 2019: Hasn't been fixed yet. Some evidence seems to show that the stuttering is in part triggered or made worse by FPS going over 60. So the more powerful your hardware, the worse you will see this bug. Which may explain why it was reported more frequently by people with higher end GPUs (1080s, 2080s, AMD equivalents, etc.). It would also match up with other 'above-60fps' engine bugs Destiny 2 has had in the past: weapon effect animations, jump pads, etc. Perhaps this coupled with something in public areas is causing the stuttering to gradually get worse.

  • Same thing for me, and it is not related to being in a clan or a public event. It happens to me everywhere I go and in everything I do, including story mode, crucible, adventures, and everything else. I am not in a clan, and it is not low FPS because I have a GTX 1070 and am running at 100 FPS. But still, I get little freezes/stuttering/whatever as often as every few seconds, making the game nearly unplayable. Haven't seen a game launched that was this buggy since Watch Dogs.

  • Same here. Went through the entire story from 1-20 without any performance drops at all, but since then I have to restart the game every hour or so.

  • I too have this problem and it got a LOT worse as of yesterday. I can't even play for 10 minutes without it happening anymore. I've also had a lot of complete lock ups (probably 10 or so by now since release) where the game freezes but the sound keeps playing. I have an i7 7700k, GTX 1080ti, 16gigs of ram, game installed on an SSD along with windows 7 64 bit. I've tried leaving my clan and that didn't help. Drivers and windows are completely up to date. I thought I had fixed it when i set a 100 FPS frame limit with nvidia inspector. But after an hour of good performance it went back to poor performance within 10 minutes of starting the game. What's strange about it is, the game FPS overlay shows 100+ FPS all the time, but it's definitely more around 20-30. I can set the graphics to ultra or to low and it's the same effect. This leads me to believe the game is having troubles and and chugging along somewhere else.

Same deal here. Almost feels like a frame pacing issue as fps stays steady. But game play stutters and chugs after about an hour. Restarting the client is the only solution. Leaving clan did nothing but screw me out of rewards this week. Open world areas suffer the most.

  • 7700k 32gb ram and a 1080ti at 1440p high refresh and i get it aswell normally takes 3-4 hours before it starts happening tho and a fresh restart makes it work again. i have looked at disc usage ram usage and everything stays normal fps 100+ but feels like its single digits its not a huge deal in PVE but when trials of the nine is out and if it happens mid match that could be really problematic. fingers crossed for a timely soloution

Same type problem. I've started exiting the game periodically to clean up the choppiness/slowdown. It's not a fps problem, it's something bogging down in the game itself. ETA: another thread about it: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/236595246?sort=0&page=0

  • I mostly get the issue after ive been playing for an hour or two, only a total game reset will fix it, and the fps counter is saying 60fps+

i7-3820 @ 4.3ghz 64gb 1080 Ti SSD @ 500+ read/write. Stutter without actual FPS drop, if I muscle through it while it isn't that bad eventually the game will "pulse" at near single frame rates.

  • Try changing to European servers. Fixed my problems with stuttering frames and I am thinking of chilling here until they resolve this issue

  • I somehow managed to get through the entire story before noticing it, though it's probably anecdotal and I was lucky. But now every time I log in to do some public events, I'll eventually "catch" the stuttering/choppiness problem and it only gets worse from then on. When trying to just grit through it, it will get noticeably worse up to the point of not being able to play effectively. I have an R9 290 and my FPS is reported in the 30-50 range, even during the stuttering.

  • I just did 2 hours worth of single player content with no increase of "dropped frames." A smooth 60+fps the entire way. Even in the large open zones. After casually playing since then, I've noticed all the biggest instances of this happening are during public events. Seems some event locations might be worse than others - but it is permanent once it starts. Only completely restarting the game, or going back to the main menu Destiny 2 splash screen, fixes/resets it.

    • I have the same issue. I completed the game but it plagued me the whole time. I have a solid smooth 60fps on a 60hz monitor but the game is very choppy after a few minutes of play then in gets worse quickly. frames never drop whatsoever but it is just sickeningly choppy. i7 3820 3.6ghz, 16gb ram, gtx 970, win10 64bit. In seeing this issue in certain games over the years it always seems like some kind of vsync issue or something to do with frame skipping/frame stutter/whatever it would be called. Some games have it badly, like Destiny 2. Most every other game I play though does not have this problem. I'm glad it's just not an issue with me as I suspected it wasn't. I've tried settings graphics to low, high, custom, borderless window, borderless fullscreen, turning off vsync in-game and forcing it through nvidia control panel, turned on triple buffering, basically things like that. No luck. I would just like to play the end game content in peace but the frame skipping/stuttering/chopping is sickeningly bad.

Have you checked vram usage at the time that this occurs? I know the 970 suffers when more than 3.5gb is allocated. It could start allocating that part (last .5gb of memory) that has severely reduced bandwidth, and once it does it could continue allocating that memory. Basically, a 970 is a 3.5gb card, and if allocating more than that, there are severe frame drops when using the last .5gb of memory.
