THIS IS NOT A CASE OF LOW FPS. Monitored framerate is NOT dropping during the stutter. The game mostly runs great during combat between 60-144 fps. Silky smooth. I noticed some real annoying stuttering that gradually gets worse over time (very visible when trying to turn your character quickly), but strangely my FPS was still 60+. It would eventually get bad enough to become more than an annoyance and start to affect gameplay quite a bit. I could even go to orbit and my mouse cursor would skip around while moving it around in the menus with my fps as a solid 144. As soon as I restarted the game - BAM perfectly smooth again.
Changing any graphics settings (vsync, aim smoothing, fullscreen, etc.) does not fix the bug.
Switching drivers (the bug has been around for a year's-worth of driver updates now) - and even completely changing hardware - does not fix the bug.
Most people seem to be getting the stutter the worst/fastest from doing public activities. My current theory is that it still has something to do with clan and/or public player list data piling up in the code and not getting properly cleaned out.
What sets this bug apart from other stutter bugs?:
1) The stutter gets worse over time. Destiny 2 does not have the frame stutter immediately after starting the game. Noticeable difference after ~30-60 minutes of gameplay. Early on, you might not notice it, but your brain does.
2) You can temporarily fix the stutter by restarting the game. Reportedly, some people get it to reset by returning to orbit... but not always.
3) Not a mouse polling issue. Still occurs with mouse disconnected and playing with only a controller.
4) Framerate does not drop precisely during the micro-stutter, nor after the stutter gets worse.
OUTDATED bug reproduction info:
This was initially a reliable way to reproduce the issue, but a lot has changed since then. It is still reproducible via these steps, but the bug is not as suddenly noticeable as it used to be):
I have managed to reproduce this choppiness bug every time.
I'd be interested in seeing if the exact same thing can be done by others with different rig setups:
1. Start up fresh game
2. Go to Artifact's Edge on Nessus and wait for public event - the Cabal Drill event.
3. AS SOON AS PUBLIC EVENT BEGINS (sky darkens, etc.) the choppiness starts.
Only a game restart will fix this. Going back to orbit, or even loading into another area, the strange stuttering persists until game restart.
I have noticed the game doing this "dropped frames" thing elsewhere - maybe just over time it gets worse. But this one public event was like night and day when it started.
Edit Nov. 30 2017: This is still an issue even after the clan roster fix, although the performance degrades at a slower pace than it used to. Continuously doing public events is still the best/fastest way I have found to reproduce this issue.
Edit Sept. 7 2018: Still an issue. Have to restart the game every hour or so to reset the stutter. Many people reporting it being worse since Forsaken (more active clan & player lists aggravating the issue?)
Edit March 7 2019: Hasn't been fixed yet. Some evidence seems to show that the stuttering is in part triggered or made worse by FPS going over 60. So the more powerful your hardware, the worse you will see this bug. Which may explain why it was reported more frequently by people with higher end GPUs (1080s, 2080s, AMD equivalents, etc.). It would also match up with other 'above-60fps' engine bugs Destiny 2 has had in the past: weapon effect animations, jump pads, etc. Perhaps this coupled with something in public areas is causing the stuttering to gradually get worse.

i5 6600k oc to 4.3 ghz and gtx 1070 ti same problem

As of today, V-sync fixes this issue. However, V-sync is only limited to 30fps & 60fps framerate caps so higher performance PC's having this issue may not want to go this route.

Same Problem: Ryzen 5 2600 RX590 DDR4 3200MHz 144Hz Monitor 2k, freesync on, VSync and any other framerate limiter off. Task Manager says my CPU is only 50% and my GPU is only at 60% other games cap my GPU at 100% at lowest settings. Restarting dosent even helps anymore, repairing neither. With a fresh Windows install it works only for a week.

RTX 2070 and 4790K here. I'm having this issue at over 100 frames constant. I have a spare Ryzen CPU lying around, but I haven't gotten the chance to try it. I'm assuming it's a CPU issue. I thought it might have been that the mouse input was having issues with Borderless Windowed, but Fullscreen doesn't seem to fix the problem.

I don't know a lot about pc gaming or pcs as a whole. but all I know is this latest update for Destiny 2 took me from running around 70 to 80 fps to 20 to 30 fps with crazy lag like stutters in any zone I load into. please tell me there is a magic fix for this. also never had my CPU tap out on this game but now when I load it my CPU sits at 100% is d2 a CPU intensive game? GPU sits at 60% utilization. rysen 1400 no overclock msi b350 mb radeon rx580 4gb 8gb ram 3000mhz intel m.2 ssd

Has any fix been found?

I have the same problem. If I set V-Sync to 60FPS it resolves somewhat but if I turn it off when the frame rate goes above 60fps it gets really choppy again. This is a really frustrating issue to have. I wish we could find a fix for it. Ryzen 2700x Radeon VII 16GB Ram Windows 10

SO I had the same thing happen to me. I just downloaded the game on pc, I have thousands of hours on console. So I know how things work. Through the beginning of the game up until the very first public area everything works amazing at highest. Constant 65 fps 51fps lowest 1%. SO I dont know if it is public areas or what. Well after I read everyone messages here I realized it inst a fps situation. Or even lag. So I attached my ps4 controller with ds4 AND GUESS WHAT....Somehow this choppy bs doesn't affect controls with a controller. Try it out and let me know if I am crazy. Thanks Hope this helps

I just got this issue after this "maintenance" that was on Thursday. When I play PVP and someone is poping up from a corner game freezes... in PVE is quite ok ...
-
I did a scan and repair and the problem was fixed immediately no more choppy ness
-
same problem AMD RX570 windows 10 Ryzen 7 12gb or ram

I haven't had time enough in-game to confirm that it helped me (since it takes an hour or so for the stuttering to really kick in), but just for something to try, go to your destiny2.exe file, right click, go to the Compatibility tab and CHECK "Disable fullscreen optimizations" I will try to report back if this worked for me if I can remember to.

The stutter-problem is still present on this day. I've had this problem before after updating windows 10 to the most recent version. After that I rolled back windows 10 to 1803 and the problem was gone and had buttery smooth gameplay. Due to other problems I had to update windows again to the latest may 2019 update and guess what! Destiny 2 started to stutter again. A solid 60fps but there's some sort of tremble present that makes the gameplay look shaky. I7 7700k Gtx 1070 16gb 3200mhz

Edited by Charlemagne: 6/8/2019 5:41:59 AMI have the same issue and have been having it since roughly the start of Forsaken. Still continues today after the Opulence patch. Intel Core i5 6600k @ 3.5GHz Nvidia GTX 980 Ti 16GB RAM Windows 10 144Hz monitor. I've tried all manner of vsync and frame cap "fixes". Nothing improves it :( Seems to be at it's worst in open world areas and during public events

I have also issues with stattering but if Vsync is enabled statter is gone. Yap statter is there only with Vsync OFF. win 10 gtx 1080 60hz 8gb ram There is not fps issue, fps >60 constntly tried in full hd, 2k and 4k

It's been fixed after 1.5 years with update 2.2.1. Who would have thought that. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the update notes: https://www.bungie.net/en/Explore/Detail/News/47738 I've tested and verified that this specific issue has been fixed.
-
Yep, it was on and off for me before but not it happens everytime I try booting the game up and hasn't improved. It's actually the reason I haven't played the game in a half a year despite being a dummy and buying the year 2 season pass. They hustled my ass good.

Stutter still here, it's making me sick i5-4670 16gb ram 1600mhz gtx 1070 g1 not a bottleneck because it stutters even on 4K
-
So as of the Arc Week update, this issue has been completely fixed for me. I've had this issue the entirety of me playing up until now, but I can now join public areas and run public events for hours and never get this issue.
-
Idk if I'm getting this bug due to my hardware, but I'm assuming that I'm not because I'm running the game at 130fps pretty consistently GTX 1060 6GB i5-7600k 512gb SSD
-
Edited by MattimusDecimus: 4/2/2019 11:16:30 PMI have exactly this issue. I'm running the game on a EVGA 1080 ti FTW3 - so fits with the powerful hardware thesis. I have my framerate capped to 60, but I still get this issue. It definitely seems to related to public events.
-
Same issue here, had since launch
-
Same problem. Bungie does not care at all. Only if you give them money.
-
Issue just started for me today. I have high FPS with no frame drop and whenever I leave an npc or some time of fast movement I get a stutter with no drop in FPS. Definitely not a hardware issue for me
-
Hellooo? Bungie are you there? The stutter is still here.
