From what I understand is that we will receive rewards for achieving certain milestones during D1. I don't think you have to import a character to get those rewards. Even if you do, collect your rewards, store them(which I don't think you would have to as I feel they will probably implement kiosks from the beginning or whatever point our new social space becomes available) and then delete your character and start a new one.
