In Destiny 2 does the Traveler get destroyed?

Has anyone else noticed in the released images and video of Destiny 2 there is, what looks like, a very large broken spherical object, with an energy cloud inside and lightning striking it etc., on earth (hopefully the linked image comes through with this post)? As this is so large that the piece of it is bigger than the mountains it sits within, it has to be something of the scale of the Traveler. Thus my question is this the ruins of the Traveler and thus is it the Traveler destroyed in the battle with the Red Legion?

  • That's a shard of the Traveller, as confirmed above. Probably dislodged by Rasputin. In the original lore the Traveller was bouncing from system to system running from “The Darkness." The Traveller hit Earth, Golden Age, blah blah blah, then the Darkness shows up, the Traveller tries to pull a runner, and Rasputin's defense protocols kick in, realizing that if the Traveller leaves, there's nothing left to stop the “Darkness" from wiping out humanity completely, and uses his super-obscure-space-weapon-things-we-don't-know-$&@#-about and stops the big floating golf ball in its tracks, and proceeds to passively monitor the Guardians and nearby Last City and Tower.

  • Pre-release the traveler seemed very important to the story. 3 years later still waiting to hear about why. Maybe d2 will answer that.

    • No. In the EDZ there is only a "shard of the traveler" not a result of he traveled being destroyed

    • No. The Jolly Green Giant whacked it with his 9 iron, and it landed on Io. A little shaken, but otherwise all right.

    • I think Deej had talked about this in an interview with Holly from PlayStation Access. What is in the image is actually a shard of the Traveller which is located near The Farm where Hawthorne has been living. Possibly this is how we get our own Light back as mentioned by Zavala: "If the Light returned to you, perhaps there's hope for us all". Maybe one of the first missions after leaving the ruins of the Tower and after going to Felwinter Peak and the Iron Temple.

      • No, the Cabal do not destroy the Traveller, Ghaul is here to claim as he believes they should have been chosen by the Traveller and not Humans. What you see in the images and videos is, in fact, part of the Traveller, but it is from the end of the Golden Age when the Traveller was originally damaged.
