Phantasy Star Universe did this and it provided a ton of variety in the player base. I was a "Fighgunner", so I specialized in pistol and sword combo. There were 20 or so weapon archetypes, you could use almost any weapon, but you could only use A and S class of the ones in your class. I loved that system.
