There has always been a Speaker, an anonymous high priest with a mysterious and powerful connection to the Traveler and its Ghosts. In all the centuries of the City's history, the Speaker's great work has never changed - to guide new Guardians, heal the Traveler, and raise our crippled protector from its slumber.
Many call the Speaker mysterious and make preposterous theories of his true intentions, but today I will bring clarity to man behind the mask, and show that we know much more than you may have thought.
First, we already know every Speaker is a Guardian because he has a Ghost and is said to have a strong connection to the Light. None but Guardians have a true connection with the Light, so that crosses out other options.
We know there have been multiple Speakers over the years, so I will mark every point where a new Speaker could have appeared.
Dark Age:
This Speaker was one of the first chosen by the Traveler to rise from the grave, as pointed out by the fact that he was around back when the City was just a couple tents and campfires. We don’t know his name or Class, but he guided humanity through the Dark Age and helped create the Last City and guide humanity to it.
Multiple Speakers could have come and gone during the Dark Ages, or this first could have survived to the City Age
City Age:
A Speaker was there when the City Age began, and stood amongst ranks of Risen/Guardians who knew nothing about the Light or Traveler or why they had been brought back, only that they had abilities beyond others and were not weighed down by death. The first Speaker(s) came to be (a Guardian/Guardians) in a time where almost no one knew how to use their Light for combat purposes (the ability to use Light for Supers and such did not truly begin developing until a bit before Six Fronts, before then they only used Light for physical enhancement), but as the City Age went on they began to understand. Those who studied the ways of the Light became known as Warlocks. Those who were dedicated to the defense of the City, were barriers against the Darkness, and protected the people who traveled to the City became Titans. Those who went out searching for survivors and enemies to track became known as Hunters.
The Speaker no longer has any Class name that he is defined as, for he is not supposed to seem biased to one specific group and because the Speaker is a completely different status than a Class division. But before they took up the mask we can assume that most if not all of them were Warlocks because it has always been their job to study the Light and educate others on the Traveler.
Wearing a robe doesn’t automatically make someone a Warlock though, and it’s likely that a Titan may have become Speaker at one point since they have always been protectors.
(Also, just because someone fought at Six Fronts and/or defended the City doesn't make them a Titan).
This is where there may have possibly been a Speaker change
Wartimes:
(This upcoming section uses information I found awhile back, but unfortunately have not been able to locate since. I consider this section to be correct, but currently cannot cite a source to prove it)
When the Faction Wars began, a Speaker was at the head of the charge, telling Guardians that they were not meant to oppress the citizens of the City and war against each other. The Speaker proved himself to be one to look up to during the Faction Wars. The Faction Wars were cut off by Six Fronts, and the Speaker that was around during this time was responsible for the training and teaching of Saint-14, and even became a father figure to the legendary Titan.
(They referred to each other as father and son, but without capitals as if to actual family. No other has been known to address the Speaker like this so it most likely has nothing to do with a religion that views the Speaker as a priest)
When Six Fronts ended, the Guardians and citizens collectively decided to create the Consensus, Vanguard, and the official position of Speaker. The citizens chose a specific few amongst the City to represent them, while the Guardians chose one for each Class to represent them, and then it came to the decision of who would represent the Traveler (proven in the grimoire titled The City: City Age that the Consensus, Vanguard, and Speaker have equal power and must vote unanimously for subjects such as letting new Faction reps into the Tower. The Speaker does not have unlimited power as many seem to believe).
From then on Speakers were elected from those believed to be dedicated to the study of Light and the voicing of what they believe the Traveler would want. The Speaker’s mask tradition probably began so that people will not view him as a man, but as a conduit for the Traveler to communicate through; they probably believe no one should put a face to the Traveler or believe that a man is the Traveler rather than the massive entity hanging above us.
Osiris relations:
Word got out of Osiris after Six Fronts, and Saint-14 himself actually told the Speaker the Warlock was worth talking to, so the Speaker sparked up a bond (this is described in the Osiris grimoire, which also suggests that this Speaker had probably been a Warlock). Osiris became Vanguard Commander and together he and the Speaker unraveled some of the mysteries of the Light, but before long Osiris’s supposed banishment separated them. The Speaker kept his eyes and ears open, however, and when Saint’s crusade against House Devils ended he sent the Titan to Mercury under the pretense of bringing Osiris back to the Tower so they could discuss what he had learned. We also know that the Speaker sent at least a few Ghosts to Mercury after Osiris, but those that came back learned nothing but rumors.
(This was all mostly from the Saint-14 grimoire)
Since the disappearance of Saint multiple new Speakers may have come to power, but it’s also a safe guess to say the Speaker that was friends with Osiris was also the one captured by Ghual
Recent years:
The Speaker now resides in his observatory and personal Tower quarters, waging war against the Darkness from behind his desk instead of on the field. He teaches all he has learned to the other Guardians, and tries to guide all closer to the Light and to victory against the Darkness.
The Speaker did not change between D1 and D2. We know because it’s the same voice actor
With the latest Speaker (who dropped the sickest roasts) dead and the Traveler awake, there’s no telling who the next will be, if a new one will be chosen at all.
The Dreams of Alpha Lupi:
(Mostly speculation here since nothing is truly known about these Dreams)
These are the thoughts of the Traveler as we can tell by the fact that they are described as only the Traveler could see them, although we find them oddly written in second person. This is because the Speaker is the one who probably writes them. We know from D2 that the Traveler never shared any visions with the Speaker (like the vision we got from the Shard), but it is very possible that the Speaker could have written down his thoughts on what the Traveler felt during the Golden Age and Collapse. The Dreams of Alpha Lupi could very well be a record of all the Speaker wishes he could ask or tell the Traveler.
Another possibility is that someone had dreams/visions about the Traveler and wrote them down. The Traveler is the one I believe to be called Alpha Lupi and these journals are named so to show that they are dreams about the Traveler.
(The only real-world relation to Alpha Lupi is the name of a star. Stars radiate light and bring life to worlds touched by their warmth; the Traveler fits)

Saint-14 is NOT sent to kill Osiris, instead just find him. I think that Osiris wasn't exiled from the city but instead left on free will. Maybe the speaker wants to talk, or make sure he hasn't gone to the darkness? Gaurdians do not kill one another unless absolutely necessary, or you're Dredgen Yor. I doubt Osiris even found Saint-14, but if he did they might be working together. Read the Ishtar Collective page, they look through all the grimoire and have evidence. "He left the City in exile, although whether this was by his own accord or by the will of the Consensus is not clear."

The first Ghost resurrected Bill Nighy because the Traveler needed a voice that is both cryptic and epic.
-
I COULD tell you of the speaker... of why it's such an important position.. of how he got to where he is and what the -blam!- he even does...
-
First, we already know the Speaker is a Guardian because he has a Ghost, he is strong with the Light, and he has lived hundreds and hundreds of years.
We dont know this. There has always been a Speaker, but that doesn't mean THE Speaker.
The Speaker was one of the first chosen by the Traveler to rise from the grave.
Relative to the rest, since he was around with Osiris and Six Fronts. That doesn't mean he came before the Iron Lords, though.
He was there when the City Age began, and stood amongst ranks of Risen/Guardians...
You don't know this. The first frame of reference is Six Fronts, not Dark Ages.
The Speaker came to be in a Guardian in a time where almost no one knew how to use their Light for combat purposes
The Speaker came in a time when they literally ONLY knew how to use their Light for combat. It wasn't until Osiris that they started to question "why?" and develop the Light.
The closest guess we have to the Speaker's Class is Titan because of how he took a place in defense of the City in these early days
So Osiris, a known Warlock, is also a Titan because he fought in Six Fronts? The Speaker is the Speaker. A classless charlatan. Warlock if you must give a title.
As for the Speaker's race...
That's what I would argue. Didn't address the Awoken face people claim to see when glitching in, though.
When the Faction Wars began, the soon-to-be-Speaker was at the head of the charge, telling Guardians that they were not meant to oppress the citizens of the City and war against each other.
Literally where tbh
The Speaker proved himself to be one to look up to during the Faction Wars.
Literally where tbqhwyf (to be quite honest with you fam)
When the Faction Wars ended, the Guardians and citizens collectively decided to create the Consensus, Vanguard, and the position of Speaker.
Only the Consensus. The whole idea behind the Speaker is that he has been there forever. Tradition is what keeps the charlatan in power. The very nature behind him is theology - which continues in power because "thats the way its always been done"
The citizens chose a specific few amongst the City to represent them, while the Guardians chose one for each Class to represent them, and then it came to the decision of who would represent the Traveler.
Literally where. Consensus has only shown signs of choosing themselves (with the faction representation) and the Vanguard are on it - which mind you has also only shown signs of recommendation where Osiris was appointed Vanguard Commander due to Saint.
he was the best choice, and was elected to his position.
Literally where. Osiris was a much better choice and the Speaker reached power by already being in power. Theology.
The Speaker now wears his mask so that people will not view him as a man
On the outside this would be the Speaker's answer, but it also serves as a way to hide his face - for more selfish reasons.
The Dreams of Alpha Lupi... This is because the Speaker is the one who writes them.
LITERALLY WHERE
The Traveler transmits its thoughts to the Speaker as can only be compared to sharing a dream or vision, and the Speaker then records them as one would write an event told to them by a friend
This is what the Speaker wants you to believe, but is in fact false. The Speaker is a charlatan, never forget that.
because the Traveler is called Alpha Lupi
Again, literally where. This was started by Anonpig back in 2014. The dude was a resident egotist and lesser known idiot. The only reference to Alpha Lupi in Destiny outside of the ARG Grimoire (Dreams of Alpha Lupi) is to the real life Alpha Lupi star.
The two grew closer than almost any other Guardians had, and though they had no way to tell if they were related or not, they became like family.
Brainwashing will do that
Father and Son (nothing to do with religious structure).
Is that a fact? The symbol of theology in Destiny and the City's Pope calling Saint-14, someone who treats Light like a religion and goes on Crusades and literally has SAINT in the name, his Son has no religious context considering they are not biologically related?
The Speaker awaits the day his adopted son will return to him from Mercury
Which he sent to kill Osiris. If he truly cared he wouldn't send him to kill the only person trying to save humanity.
whether or not he manages to convince Osiris to come back to the City with him.
KILL. There is no convincing. The only two possibilties here is that Osiris killed Saint or Saint reached Mercury and the visions showed him the truth.

I'm pretty confident hes a warlock since if you look where he stays in a tower there are alot of books and he is "studying" on his table
-
Did you saw the old observatory in fellwinter? Was it the guide observatory before the tower exist?
-
There could be more than one Speaker, I mean why would only one resides in the Tower we only land on? It could be possible each Speaker are on each tower which gives other guardians objectives elsewhere. Just saying
-
Just to clear things up, The Speaker is Donald Trump and we live in Trump Tower.
-
We don't know if the speaker was ever a guardian or if he was ever in the field. Having a ghost means he was once dead and brought back to life by the traveller's light but that doesn't mean he was brought back to be a guardian. He could have been chosen for his role as the speaker.
-
in the Saint-15 grimoire
Spelling error, just pointing it out. Nice post anyway!
-
So he is basically like the pope, channelling the word of god. As an atheist i find this hilarious
-
Thank you for the work this took to create this, and with accuracy as well
-
That was a ton of text that could have been like 4 lines. You included a ton about the creation of the last city that he really wasnt a part of and then just added speculation. Please don't pretty up assumptions by adding block citing from grimoire. What do we know? He's a guardian, he was around when the city was founded, and he holds a high station that gives him away over a lot of people. iirc he can "commune" with the traveler(not directly, but it "guides" him to send us some places). But since I'm not 100% on that one I separated it from the others.
-
Haha, if only this was in game! -blam!- you Bungie.
-
Its a weird choice of words they use when they talk about there always being a speaker, like theres been many speakers, anyway, nice write up even though you didnt mark some of this stuff as your own speculation like the relationship between the speaker and saint 14.

Edited by Nick Bosa: 1/14/2017 9:55:15 AMThe speaker is a George Soros hive puppet beware of a false flag on the tower!!!!!!! Before the next speaker gets in

This is retarded . If you're going to do stuff like this provide grimoire that reinforces your best educated guess. The Speaker could be a hunter, you don't know.
-
The traveler and the darkness represent an impossible situation. An immovable object and an unstoppable force. This is a class thought experiment, if there is absolute peace, how do you know it's not chaos. The darkness and the light are inherently the same force acting in different manners. The fallen see us as thieves, the hive see us another enemy to fight, the cabal see.... I don't phucking know. There can be no light without the dark.
