There are two mechanics to crashing in SRL races: Respawning and getting on your Sparrow.
The perk on the chest piece reduces the respawn time, and Fast Enter gets you on your Sparrow faster. Using the two together makes crashes far less harmful.

Air Control keeps me from crashing on the damn jump on Venus when some hob-job bumps me and the jump-gate decides it would like to send me into the cliff face.

It is useless compared to air control. Best way to win a race is by getting away and not crashing

Oh yes, not crashing is the best way to win. But crashing isn't always avoidable. And with Fast Enter, crashing isn't as devastating. Air Control won't help you when you drop from first to sixth because Jimmy over here decided to ram you into a wall.
