How is Ark Survival Evolved for solo players? [PS4]

Just saw it's available on PS4 I read there are PvP and PvE servers, and that in PvP servers your base can get raided. Doesn't sound like a good place for solo players and beginners. And on PvE servers? Is it hard to survive, build a base etc. solo? Thanks.

  • You can play local solo. I play like that with just my wife. Atleast on xbox you can. Dont see why they would remove that from the ps4 version.

  • Play on a private server. I just use ark as a realistic version of minecraft. Or play PvP....with friends

  • As a solo player on an official server, it will at the least be quite a large time investment. Wildcard recently made the taming/harvesting rates x2 permanently on officials, so that helps a bit in regard to resource grinding. It all really comes down to how a particular alpha tribe governs the server. This is much more prevalent in PVP, but still shows how others carry themselves in other aspects of the game. Kiting aggressive creatures, and pillaring off large areas is a PvE staple for trolls. Just be aware going into it, particularly solo. I'd recommend going into a single player or local game first. At the very least you can get familiar with the games many many different mechanics, and experiment with various rate adjustments and engram unlocks (which there is a limited amount if what one can learn). Another great option is private player dedicated servers. Where a player uses a separate Xbox as the hosting server, and can adjust any and all rates in game, as well as invite as many or few survivors as the host wishes. This is particularly rewarding when playing with friends. If you plan to go into official PvE or PvP, try and go around talking to other survivors before you spend your time building/taming. Often others can tip you off on how the server operates, and if there're any trolls to watch out for. The biggest thing is to just have fun, and try not to get too attached to your first tames...

I play alone mostly on official pve map and I'm still loving it. Idiots put thatch foundations and pillars in a lot of places so you can't build but apart from that it's ok. Thinking about using my mates old PS4 and setting up a dedicated server soon, our non dedicated ones never work for us.

    • I played public but alone on my save..... it took a long time to get anything established. I survived for a really long time but finally gave up when cave exploring and a couple of hidden pythons came at me and killed me while i had all my best gear. So much metal and grind just lost.. That and this douche that i added to my tribe that aggroed a huge level ape and lured it to my house. I killed it but i lost my first raptor :( later that a hole lured a rex there but i survived.... with use of all my ballistas. One night he also dragged my body into the water while i was offline so next time i went on i added a lock and 3rd floor.

    • PvE servers are generally a bit toxic. Since players can't troll the way they do in PvP, they come up with even more inconvenient strategies. You'll find columns and foundations spammed all over the map, and since you cannot destroy other tribe's structure on PvE servers or build near them, you will often have a hard time setting up in a good spot. PvP has it's own issues, but I'd highly recommend going that route instead. More options, more engaging, less foundation spam.

    • It's like every other survival game you'll just get bored very quickly in PvE
