Why are so many games on sale this year?

Every fall release this year has already been discounted by 50% or more. Yesterday Amazon sold the Battlefield 1 bundle with statue and game for over $100 off. It's great for consumers, but it seems ridiculous to sell a game for $60 and then a month or two later sell it for less than $30. Why are publishers doing this to themselves? Is this the beginning of the end for $60 games?

  • It's awesome paying full price for games, then watching them get cut in half a few weeks later. I payed $130 bucks for BF1. Game sucks

  • Where have you been these last few years because to me Gaming has been like this for a very, very long time now.

  • -it's holiday season, and these sales are not totally uncommon -digital sales are on the rise, leading to fewer hard copies being sold, which leads to retailers trying to get rid of their stock by lowering the price

    • Either they've sold well enough that the publishers feel they've made sufficient profit at that price point (Battlefield 1 is likely an example of this), or it hasn't sold well enough, and publishers are desperate to move as many units as possible in the hopes of making just a bit more of their money back (Battleborn may be an example of this)

If you think publishers are hurting themselves or losing money to make these deals happen you're wrong man. They're cutting into the profit margin a little bit, but they're still making money hand over fist. Plus EA is trying to kill CoD, so getting more people to play Titanfall 2 and BF1 by offering them at a discounted price will help them in the long run. Also idk how amazon works with the publishers, it could be amazon bought and paid for a shitload of these games and are just offering deals to get them out of the door. Doesn't necessarily mean the publishers are the ones pushing the deals, especially if they've already been paid for the merchandise.

        • The short answer is Steam changed the game.

          • It's retail man! Gotta move the stock. Most items have at least a 100% increase over cost, so selling it for 50% off means they are still making a 50% profit.

            • Titanfall 2 is already like 34.99 new. Yet GTA V is still 59.99 new

              • Don't think the 60 dollar price tag will go away anytime soon. Sales towards the end of the year are nothing new. Steam winter sale has been going on for some time
