Importance of Music in Games

I have three questions. You may answer only the ones you care to answer, or all of them. Firstly, how important is music in videogames to you? Does it not matter, is it a nice icing on the cake, is it a pretty big deal but ultimately unnecessary, or does it make or break a game for you? Secondly, let's say you hear a song that blows you away and you absolutely love it, whether it's exciting, dramatic, chilling, emotional or beautiful. However, you've either never seen gameplay from the game it's from, or you have and weren't interested in it. Does that amazing music you heard make you want to love the game, or want to try it? And lastly, what are some games with incredible music? Are those games some of your favorite, or do you simply enjoy the music? Do you feel the music changed your view on those games? Maybe share a specific song?

  • Music plays a DAMN large importance in games if you ask me. Undertale's music makes the game play so much more on your emotions. Halo's soundtrack makes you feel badass during the game, or piss your pants during the flood encounters. Dark Souls. There's nothing to say. Awesome OST's. Trailers? Way better with music. I love music a lot, and I think a lot of the games I lob have damn good soundtracks. Any recommendations?

  • I heard the Uncharted OST before I played the game. Now Uncharted is part of my top 5

  • Music isn't really that important to me in games but when you think about it, it kinda gives the game character, especially for Ori & the Blind Forest and Valiant Hearts

  • Music is pretty important. It's what sets the mood and tone of the game.

  • Good music in a game is a must. Destiny's music made me want to try it, and per the music areas I wasn't disappointed. Skyrim.

From the doo doo doo of the original Super Mario bros... Through the outlaw country song "Evil Ways" in Rebel Galaxy... All the way up to the orchestral notes of a dramatic Dark Souls boss fight... Music can be everything you mentioned. Music is universally understood yet profoundly intimate. It can be icing on an already excellent game. It can make the entire game or just as easily break it. Music can elevate and inspire or it can drag you down, make you feel the impact of an emotional moment.

  • Every game needs great scores. Without them, they will feel flat. I also strongly believe that music should go in sync with certain scenarios to give them a breath of life. Anime does this better than anything. Nier, despite having bad gameplay, has a captivating soundtrack that goes beautifully with the story. Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4, Kingdom Hearts, .Hack://, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII, VIII, XI and X also have amazing music (To name a few!)

  • 1. Music is pretty damn important. It can change how you feel in the game. Imagine Halo without it's legendary soundtrack 2. I wouldn't say that the song alone makes you love the game. I think the game itself and the music gives you the feels towards the game 3. Halo, Skyrim, Oblivion, The Last of Us, The Witcher 3, even Destiny has good music

  • DOOM and Killer Instinct have phenomenal soundtracks. Ever since I heard the KI soundtrack, I wanted to buy the game, and regretted not downloading it when it was free.

  • If Bloodborne, Danganronpa, or Mario didn't have soundtracks of any kind, they would have felt completely different. The Upper Cathedral Ward wouldn't have felt as ominous, the Classroom Trials would have lost their sense of urgency and progression, and Mario would have lost... well, most of its identity. The soundtrack is just as important as the art style, gameplay, and text. They all have to come together as one to make a game.

  • WARNING: Text wall! The music in videogames makes the atmossphere! If its a silent soundtrack for a cave or special place, a loud energetic for a fight, or just full of emotions for a heart-breaking scene. Without the music, something would be missing Only Instrumental: I love soundtracks like 'Gluttony Fang' from BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend. A mix between piano and electro-guitar for one of the best antagonists if have ever seen. Or 'I'll face myself' from Persona 4, where you fight your own shadow. The side of you, you want to hide from everyone. 'Gerudo Valley' and 'Song of Storms' from The Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time... do I have to say more about those? Instrumental & Vocal 'Lost in thoughts all alone' from Fire Emblem Fates. A track that has different meanings depending on the path your Fate will guide you. 'Dragonborn' from Skyrim, I dont know what to say about that... I'll just love it. I could continue this for days, because Soundtrack are the one thing that makes me play a game for hundreds of hours. To hear a track that only appears once in a game, I would play it again, even if it takes me several hundreds of hours! You have my greatest thanks if you read the whole text and I hope you enjoyed it ^_^ If you want write some of your favourite songs down I would love to hear them ;-)

It's very important,The Music helps sets the mood, the music can echo the tale we are currently experiencing. I think that's one reason Martin O'Donnell had so much success with Halo's music. The Metal Gear series seems to do the same. Not really, A game can have great music and still be poop. However I will start looking for the Official Soundtrack & The Composer if it draws me in that much. Halo(Bungie's series),Dark Souls(series),JSRF,Anarchy Reigns,Bastion,Transistor,Tekken(Series),Kingdom Hearts(series). These games are all favorites and have great music.
The Lord Of Cinder theme is so powerful. In my opinion the song conveys everything we're experiencing. The Great Lord of Sunlight now nothing more than a shell of his former self,So much so He is now the Lord of Cinders(meaning dying flame). He attempts in vain to stop you,as he knows not what we are going to do?Reignite the flame? or let the world be consume by the dark? or Maybe he is fighting to see If we're worthy to replace him? The Chosen Undead walks through His/her last fog gate, the final Battle. You expect this Great lord, but you see nothing more than a hollow. Is this your future? Words need not be Spoken,You know why you're there & He knows what he must do. Let the swords talk.
• Depends on. The game. Games like the witcher and halo, the music is so good you could give the game a 10 out of 10 for just the music

    • Music is ESSENTIAL in games. I like open world RPG's the best, so I am looking for an immersive EXPERIENCE. Skyrim, The Witcher 3 and Fable (1 and 2) are some of my favorite soundtracks ever. Sometimes I listen to them when I draw (very inspirational). Some of my other all time favorites : Metroid, StarCraft (1 and 2) and Diablo (all three). Amazing stuff!

    • To me, a video game without music is a peanut-butter & jelly sandwich without bread. Most of my favorite songs are video game soundtracks. I'm not often in that kind of situation, but if I am I try to track it down. My favorite soundtracks include Halo (especially Halo 2), Destiny, Gears of War, Oblivion, Super Smash Bros, and Undertale. I also really enjoy soundtracks from my childhood games like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Resident Evil, though my favorite has to be Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Time/Darkness/Sky. When I hear the track "Don't Ever Forget..." start to play, tears well up in my eyes (anyone who has played the game will understand).
