How do you feel about funerals?

To go by one dictionary definition, a funeral is considered, "the observances held for a dead person usually before burial or cremation". The exact practices or customs that occur during this period of time vary highly between cultures and religions, but generally, most documented civilizations have always held some sort of tradition or multiple traditions in regards to the preparation and disposition of the dead, depending on the populace. However, as we advance into a more modern age, there are all sorts of new methods and attitudes coming forth in regards to this matter. Some people consider funeral rites a waste of time, unnecessary, and likewise consider places such as cemeteries to be wastes of space that could be better used in other ways. However, the opposite is true in which many people still uphold old traditions and even create new traditions as they adapt their final customs in ways that better suit them. Regardless of which side you lean towards, we all have some opinion on the concept of death, as well as how we handle it when it comes to pass. And all that being said, I ask, what is your opinion on the concept of funeral rites/ceremonies? Do you believe them to be necessary or serve any practical purpose? Have you given any thought to your own? Since i'm studying to work in this field, I thought it might be interesting to see what the general sentiment around here in regards to this subject is. My thanks to anyone who chooses to read this and respond to it genuinely.

  • To me, they are kind of a waste. However, seeing ones loved one one last time can be good for them and that makes complete sense. Cemeteries on the other hand are very unnecessary to me. Just acres of buried body's and tombstones. I know when I die, I'd want my remains to be planted with a tree. So even when I'm dead, my body will help new life thrive. Imagine how beautiful cemeteries would be if instead of large plots of land, it'd be a grove of pines and oaks and lush greenery

        • I don't really care about Funerals. I'l remember, and mourn the departed my own way, but I suppose it's a nice gesture. Pretty impartial towards them overall.
I like how you use the#Flood tag, that fits in well with the whole death theme. sadly
• I usually use humor to make everyone feel better, so since laughter isn't exactly welcome in a funeral, I end up being silent and very uncomfortable
And all that being said, I ask, what is your opinion on the concept of funeral rites/ceremonies?
Mostly indifferent. My parent's job is a mortician and we've all seen some gruesome stuff haha!
Do you believe them to be necessary or serve any practical purpose?
Depends on what's it about. As far I know, it has a medical purpose, so I'd be inclined to say yes.
Have you given any thought to your own?
It give off a sense of belonging because more than often your family, your loved ones, or perhaps yourself. They all wants to be a part of the ecumenical nature and the nature of the funeral tend to be carry the vibe of solemnity or however you see fit. It is the small things that count.

I hate them almost as much as I hate weddings. I want to be incinerated and then forgotten immediately after I die.

                    • Well the Death of Shard is going to be a very big ordeal. Considering I'm nigh immortal, if I ever do kick the bucket there will be celebration. I shall be cremated, and from the ashes shall come forth precious diamonds to go to the people who were most important to me. There will be a vigil, and a statue erected in my honor. Many toast, and above all no sad music will be played at the vigil. You might think I'm noot being serious, but trust me I am. This is exactly how I want my death to be celebrated.

                      • It depends on your family and your current paradigm. In my experience, funerals are an utter waste or time, where people who never gave a crap pop up, and exit to never be seen again. I don't know why they even decided to go in the first place. Ontop of that, I never visit cemeteries. I don't believe they are a waste of space, but I never understood the fascination of visiting an empty shell. Your loved one isn't bound to that plot for all eternity. Your words don't have to be in that proximity to be heard either. I understand it's traditional though... Everyone is different of course. Some families are very tightly knit, and a funeral is a great way to come together and mourne the passing of a loved one, speak of the good old times, and speak of their next plans to meet...not add each other on facebook and never see each other again...

Can't spell funeral without fun. I'm already dead anyways. Seriously I haven't actually been to one. The only one I remember was from I was really little. I haven't had anyone really close to me die.

I recently went to a funeral of a beloved elementary school teacher. Logically, it seems like a waste of time, but it was important to me to show his family how much he meant to me. Although they undoubtedly lost the most, I wanted them to know that they were not alone in their feelings of loss. There were so many students and friends there, I hope his family could feel proud of how many lives he has touched (and bettered) in his short life. Personally, I'd prefer if my family and friends just donated whatever money to my favorite charity.

I don't care what people do because it doesn't affect me. Personally though, I'm not a fan. I think that as a society we'd be better off focusing more on celebrating the life rather than mourning the death. I think mourning serves better as a personal thing.

I always hated them. They're already dead. Nothing can be done about that , If you truly liked/loved that person you'll remember them. Not to sound rude but its true

                                    • I think it's just obligatory, a method to give everyone a last farewell all at once. Graveyards are fine as they are; observing the dates on the headstones is like going through a museum, and you might think "What was their story?" They're also good places for peace, depending on location and time. Not a lot of (living) people, gives a feeling of serenity.
