The problem with Tether

Going through the IB this weekend with my warlock, I used Palpatine. Unlimited powaaah and all that. I activated my super and started frying the enemy team when I saw a hunter activate his super. I saw it was a bow and thought this was the end. His tether hit me right in the face. I could actually see it come right at me. But it did nothing. I ran through it like a Mack truck running over a squirrel. And the tether didn't latch onto me from where it was, now directly behind me. The poor Hunter seemed to just accept his fate, flabbergasted by what had occurred. How is this possible? Why didn't the tether immediately kill me or at least shut me down? I don't think Strormtrance has extra shielding. I've been able to shut a few down with regular weapons. Also, I don't think it was lag. My Xbox is directly wired to the modem. Approximately 100 down and 12 up. It was one of those super rare matches where mostly everyone was green bar. So what do yuse guise thinks? Heh? Edit: Lots of great ideas and suggestions. I'll try to spell out a synopsis of the feedback. Let's start with the initial encounter. A single shadowshot is not strong enough to kill a warlock using Stormtrance. Couple that with the possibility that the Hunter was a much lower light, I was 307 or 308. And that is how I tanked the hit. But then I escaped the tether. And this is where I feel it needs fixing. Even though I was moving in a straight line along the ground, I was fast enough to clear the shadowshot without it tethering me. As someone pointed out, it's possible the Hunter wasn't using black hole, which would have made the tether reach farther. So by the time it did activate, I was out of its reach. Whereas with black hole, it might have caught me. Either way, it seems broken. That leads us to examine this super's uses and how best to utilize them. Offensively. Whether it's one shot or 3, using shadowshot to kill enemies in the crucible with direct impact generally requires them to not be using their super. Roaming supers could possibly be killed by 2 or 3 shots using Quiver. But that is more risky and seems redundant. As well as it being used defensively instead of offensively. Perfect segue! Defensively. This is where I feel shadowshot fills it's role and what the Hunter was using it for but failed. In order to shut down my super, he should have placed it in front of me. Thus allowing me to run into it as it activated instead of away from it. It's still hokey. But unless Bungie changes it to instant activation, that's the best strategy. Shadowshot can also be used to close off choke points, slow down rushing enemies and tether enemies going for heavy ammo spawn. The key in all these scenarios is to lead your opponents. Be a step ahead and use strategic locations. Well I can't thank the community enough for helping out on this one. It's not a perfect answer but an answer nonetheless. Hopefully Bungie is sifting through the data and adjusts this super accordingly. Oh. Wait. It's Bungie. Maybe they'll just leave it alone and nerf fusion rifles instead. Feel free to leave any other strategies, tips or stories about using Shadowshot in the crucible. I only PvP in Iron Banner these days. No trials. No other crucible matches. So that's why my understanding is so limited with what happened. But I'm always eager to learn. Thanks again, fellow guardians, and take care. Edit 2: I accidentally responded to my post instead of editing the first time. Confounded buttons and technology and all that.

    • I've never heard of a warlock who wants hunters to get a buff. My faith in humanity has been restored.

      • Hahahaha, don't worry it's not lag. I main a hunter and my tether will not beat a storm caller, Sol, or a fist of havoc. I will lose every time. The tether animation takes a while, so a fist or hammer will kill me before the animation is complete. However, I just started using my titan and the fist of havoc will beat almost any super (except for golden gun). I Fist of havoc a team of 5 once in a bubble. That was satisfying.

      • Interesting. I run crucible as a bladedancer because I had assumed that the Tether was completely useless in crucible. I guess it's inevitable people would try it because of sidestep. Maybe I'll rethink it. I've been trying to use blink to juke in front of people while getting close enough to shotgun/melee and people are just nailing me in the head while I hang in space for three seconds waiting for the blink to proc. I've had some success with using sidestep to zigzag up to people...

Stormtrance doens't give additional armor, but it does give you additional damage resistance so you can tank a little more than you normally would be able to (kinda like radiant skin). The biggest downfall with tether is the delay that comes with it. Instead of it being an immediate effect, it take a brief moment to activate once the "arrow" hits whatever the intended target was. If you direct hit someone with it, by the time the tether activates, they're already too far away from the anchor to feel its effects (pending they survive the initial hit). In order to have it be the most effective, you need to fire it where you want people to be locked in place. So you have to have a fairly large lead on your target and hit where they're about to be rather than where they are currently. If any changes are to be made, the effect should be an immediate instead of that brief delay. A lot can happen in half a second.

      • Tether does around 250 damage (I think) on a direct hit. Regardless, it is not enough to kill a super that has armor. (Yes storm trance has armor.) There is a slight delay though, on a direct hit where you abilities are not yet tethered. This can result in the hunter dying, and the super being shut down, but your opponent is left alive unless your teammates are there. If your super was not shut down at all, he missed.

        • The tether isn't immediate. He was probably using quiver, which means his tether range is small and you had escaped the range before it popped. If he had used black hole, this would be a different story. I have shot a blade dance directly and he danced right up on like nothing touched him.

I've noticed that sometimes when a hunter is in the animation they become invincible like unstopable for strikers. not sure if it's lag but it pisses me off when they're danm near dead and they pop their tether to kill me while i'm pounding them with bullets

          • It should immediately tether if a guardian or enemy is hit directly.

            • Im proud of you! Your a warlock thats not complaining, "tether shouldnt be able to shut me down!" instead your complaining. "Why didnt tether shut me down?" Also your saying hunters need a buff, not a nerf to tether.
wanna be my new best friend?
• Tethers only do 243 damage normally so with damage reduction like on a stormcaller or sunbreaker, it takes 2 arrows to kill.

            • I've had the same happen to me, I was using bladedancer and activated my super, as soon as I came around the corner took a purple arrow to the face. It did nothing and I ended up getting several kills including the poor bastard that nailed me. I seriously felt bad for the guy.

              • Had the same thing happen in trials a week ago- but with a bladedancer. Bladedancer popped, came at us, I nailed him in the head with a tether shot, and not only did he not die, he was not tethered and killed two of us instantaneously. In fact, my teammate recorded it because he said to him it was not right as I was on the ground and he was in the air and we seemed to instantly die at the same time.

              • Definitely a buzz kill. It reminds me of all the scenarios where I've had my Hunter super killed by Nova or Fist... but in this case it doesn't work half the time. Needs to have slightly more tracking or a wider hit box. Nova and Fist are far more forgiving as 1-shot super killers.

              • I've been having a different problem recently, where the tether attaches to me even though i am far away it. I was 50 feet away from one the other day, and it didn't attach, and then it attached for a second, then unattached, then reattached. I was moving away from it as well, and i have never seen one have that range before. I've also had them attach to me through walls recently. I think it needs to work more consistently, so i know what to expect from it when i see one shot!
