What if said woman is already your friend and you don't want to jeopardize that?

You don't have to jeopardize your friendship. If she isn't into you romantically, then there's no reason you can't still be friends. Tell her that very thing. And if she does like you on a deeper level then what's to say you wouldn't still be friends if you were together? Isn't that the point of having the right significant other in your life? That you become even closer friends too?
