Disc Unreadable [OP UPDATED 10.20.09]
Posted by: urk Here's the official word from our publishing partner. Sorry it took so long for us to get this out to you. We know this issue has been a source of frustration. Thanks for being patient.
We are aware of a very small number of customers reporting that their copy of Halo 3 ODST is causing a "disc read" error, which cannot be corrected by Bungie. Microsoft is fully prepared to address this issue via customer support. If you are receiving this error, please contact Microsoft customer support at 1-800-4MY-XBOX for troubleshooting assistance.
If you experience any issues or difficulties via the official support channel, please private message me directly.
Along with thousands of other unfortunate people, my Halo ODST disc became unreadable for countless times during a loading screen. There is nothing wrong with the disc, other than that the new version of DVDs are not very compatible with supposedly "older" 360s. If this happens to you, try downloading it to your hard drive. This only seem to work for a very slim amount of owners though, because if it doesn't work, then your console will be unable to read the DVD the second you start it. Also, there is another slim chance for it to work: If you can get one of your friends to host a lobby and then launch the game for you, it may just work. However, you will not be able to play the game solo. If the above doesn't work doesn't work, or if you just want to express your problems, then I suggest you message the user: Test Ninja Alpha, following the format below.
Posted by: Test Ninja Alpha Since different people can have slightly different issues, we want to get an idea of the various issues that people are seeing individually. For those of you having problems similar to this, please PM me the following: 1. A brief description of your specific problem and what you've tried to fix it. Please do not recap the thread. 2. Remove your hard drive and play through the same sections of ODST that are failing. Does that make a difference? 3. Put in Halo 3 and play through a the first few campaign missions (on easy, it'll go quick). Do you see the same behavior as in ODST, or does it function perfectly?
If you are not to sure about this problem, then the only sure-fire way to be reimbursed is to return your copy to your game retailer as soon as possible. When or if Bungie fixes this problem, you could rebuy the game and see if it works. ****EDIT: 10.2.09****
Posted by: urk Sorry about the continued delays, dudes (and ladies). We're in touch with Microsoft and they're telling us that you should be calling 1-800-4-MY-XBOX to get tickets up and going. They're still not 100% locked in on the issue, but they are making progress. But no matter what the problem is, they've assured us the resolution will be handled through their support center. If you are told by a customer service rep that they will not help you or that you should be going elsewhere for support, please ask them for their Customer Service Request # and report it to me directly via PM. Again, we know this sucks hard. Hopefully they can zero in on the problem and get you all up and working asap.
If you really want to contribute, please perform the above. And if you happen to get on the phone with an "angry" customer support employee, you should ask for their Customer Service Request #, so they feel more obligated to help you, and all of us with this problem. ****EDIT: 11.16.09****
Posted by: urk
Posted by: DEACON01 Incase many of you didn't know, but Halo 3 did have a similar problem with its campaign mode.
Since you're in the researchin' mood, you won't find it too difficult to drum up instances of DRE at just about every major title release as well. And we're not turning a deaf ear (or a blind eye). We understand that it seems that way, but we're frustrated too. We've got an open channel for you to communicate with our test team in the first post and we'd like you to stay in contact with support if you've already opened a trouble ticket. We're still in direct contact with our publisher as well to try to resolve this as quickly as possible, but unfortunately we don't have much to offer at this time, hence the silence. And yeah, I know that's aggravating for the people who can't play.
****EDIT: 11.20.09****
Posted by: urk Here's the official word from our publishing partner. • The person I called said that you would probably get the same Xbox back. Check your serial number. Hopefully you saved the first one. [Edited on 10.26.2009 3:25 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: McCheif
Let's just hope that it actually works. It's entirely possible that they're sending it back having done nothing at all to it.
The message said that my xbox was "successfully repaired", so hopefully they actually did fix it. I would imagine that whatever the problem is, they are just replacing the defective part outright, then testing to see if the box works.
My bet is that they're just sending a replacement reconditioned unit to you. That's what happened with the warranty extension replacements.

 •
Posted by: McCheif Just got an e-mail from MS. My xbox is ALREADY shipping back to me! I sent it in on Thursday afternoon. I should have it by Tuesday. That is less than 1 WEEK from phone call to fully repaired and returned. AWESOME!
Let's just hope that it actually works. • You're in the same situation I was in. I bought a new Elite and continued the campaign. I no longer get the disk unreadable message at the end of the level it was crashing on (Uplift reserve). I'm still using my old 20GB HDD until I get the data transfer cable. However, the one mission I had done was now avalible again, as if I hadn't completed it. Will just have to start again. For the fifth time.....

 •
Posted by: McCheif
Depends when you mail it out, and how far you live away from Mesquite, TX. Mail as soon as possible if you want in time for MW2.
Yeah, I just checked, and my XBOX is already being repaired, and I sent it in on Thursday afternoon. Of course, I only live about 3 hours from Mesquite (east of Dallas), so that should speed things up.
Yea, sent mine in at the same time. It's there, but it probably won't get repaired until Monday.

 • Nope all they say is, the problem can not be handled by Bungie, and you have to send it in for repair. Trying to keep everything under the rug, I assume.

 •
Posted by: DeadlyRusty Honestly I think this is ridiculous, I already returned my first copy of ODST expecting it resolve the issue. Low and behold I get to the bit at the end of Data Hive where you have to open the door and...'Disc unreadable' BS. I'm really quite annoyed now that I have to go out and buy an elite sooner than I had wanted to (I'm a student therefore quite poor) my 360 is coming to the end of its life anyway but I want to keep it going as long as I can. All my other games work fine, just ODST is giving me pain.
Well call the MS support, tell them that the problem is only isolated to ODST and that you get the "disc read error". Then they will take your info and give you a free repair.

 • Sweeeet, just got off the phone with Microsoft, "free repair" coming my way! It was a painless conversation; I answered a few questions and thats all it took. They are e-mailing me a UPS code right now, and all I have to do is go find a box to ship it with. Thanks Bungie for finding a solution for this whole mess!

 •
Posted by: S o A ribbstol I called the support, talked to them about it,that it was Halo3 odst that was the problem. But since im stupid and said that SINCE the odst problem occured my xbox360 been -blam!- up and being crazy they will NOT pay my repair. The customer-support dude said that if the problem is only isolated to ODST,then i get a free repair, not otherwise. I tried to tell the dude that it is only isolated to ODST but SINCE then the xboxs been acting out. Just like i know alot of u guys have had the same problem, brutal legend demo freezing,forza3 demo freezing and so on. Jesus christ. I paid a good deal of money for a game thats not working and its -blam!- up my console. Now i have to pay for the repair? thats crazy. I no longer hold a grudge to bungie, only to microsoft. A big F U C K you to you.
Yea. Same happened to me. Except they said if it happens on other games when they get it, they'll charge me for it. If they make me charge, I'm going to tell them to keep the piece of -blam!-. Not paying $100 when it was ODST that -blam!- the thing up.
