Disc Unreadable [OP UPDATED 10.20.09]
Posted by: urk Here's the official word from our publishing partner. Sorry it took so long for us to get this out to you. We know this issue has been a source of frustration. Thanks for being patient.
We are aware of a very small number of customers reporting that their copy of Halo 3 ODST is causing a "disc read" error, which cannot be corrected by Bungie. Microsoft is fully prepared to address this issue via customer support. If you are receiving this error, please contact Microsoft customer support at 1-800-4MY-XBOX for troubleshooting assistance.
If you experience any issues or difficulties via the official support channel, please private message me directly.
Along with thousands of other unfortunate people, my Halo ODST disc became unreadable for countless times during a loading screen. There is nothing wrong with the disc, other than that the new version of DVDs are not very compatible with supposedly "older" 360s. If this happens to you, try downloading it to your hard drive. This only seem to work for a very slim amount of owners though, because if it doesn't work, then your console will be unable to read the DVD the second you start it. Also, there is another slim chance for it to work: If you can get one of your friends to host a lobby and then launch the game for you, it may just work. However, you will not be able to play the game solo. If the above doesn't work doesn't work, or if you just want to express your problems, then I suggest you message the user: Test Ninja Alpha, following the format below.
Posted by: Test Ninja Alpha Since different people can have slightly different issues, we want to get an idea of the various issues that people are seeing individually. For those of you having problems similar to this, please PM me the following: 1. A brief description of your specific problem and what you've tried to fix it. Please do not recap the thread. 2. Remove your hard drive and play through the same sections of ODST that are failing. Does that make a difference? 3. Put in Halo 3 and play through a the first few campaign missions (on easy, it'll go quick). Do you see the same behavior as in ODST, or does it function perfectly?
If you are not to sure about this problem, then the only sure-fire way to be reimbursed is to return your copy to your game retailer as soon as possible. When or if Bungie fixes this problem, you could rebuy the game and see if it works. ****EDIT: 10.2.09****
Posted by: urk Sorry about the continued delays, dudes (and ladies). We're in touch with Microsoft and they're telling us that you should be calling 1-800-4-MY-XBOX to get tickets up and going. They're still not 100% locked in on the issue, but they are making progress. But no matter what the problem is, they've assured us the resolution will be handled through their support center. If you are told by a customer service rep that they will not help you or that you should be going elsewhere for support, please ask them for their Customer Service Request # and report it to me directly via PM. Again, we know this sucks hard. Hopefully they can zero in on the problem and get you all up and working asap.
If you really want to contribute, please perform the above. And if you happen to get on the phone with an "angry" customer support employee, you should ask for their Customer Service Request #, so they feel more obligated to help you, and all of us with this problem. ****EDIT: 11.16.09****
Posted by: urk
Posted by: DEACON01 Incase many of you didn't know, but Halo 3 did have a similar problem with its campaign mode.
Since you're in the researchin' mood, you won't find it too difficult to drum up instances of DRE at just about every major title release as well. And we're not turning a deaf ear (or a blind eye). We understand that it seems that way, but we're frustrated too. We've got an open channel for you to communicate with our test team in the first post and we'd like you to stay in contact with support if you've already opened a trouble ticket. We're still in direct contact with our publisher as well to try to resolve this as quickly as possible, but unfortunately we don't have much to offer at this time, hence the silence. And yeah, I know that's aggravating for the people who can't play.
****EDIT: 11.20.09****
Posted by: urk Here's the official word from our publishing partner. •
Posted by: El Grave OK I see they can't fix the problem with an update. So it must have been some serious messed up -blam!-. My brand new 3 month old Elite went crazy with ODST in the drive, even on startup the xbox froze up. First of all, I called support and they didn't even know of the problem. Gonna try again tomorrow, see if someone with more knowledge gets on the phone... but I'm not sure if I want to "repair" my xbox. It works fine with all games, except ODST, should I risk getting some old xbox from someone else instead of my own brand new elite? Is this a problem with the lenze of the xbox or something? Why can't they just say what's the problem. If it's a serious defect I will get it repaired but if it's something minor I won't just for ODST....
Specifically mention that you are getting constant "disc read errors" while playing Halo 3 ODST. Also be sure to get the ref # and PM urk if you're not given the correct support.

Microsoft is fully prepared to address this issue via customer support.

Has Microsoft revealed exactly what is causing this bizarre error? Does Bungie know why Halo ODST is failing on these consoles? It's very odd that all other games work fine on the affected consoles -- what is it about ODST that is so different from other games that it reveals this hardware problem?

 • Hi Westrunner. The console I had that was having problems with ODST was a refurbished console with a date of 2006 that I received in place of my original console that suffered from RROD. Wait times will vary for everyone but in my case it took 10 days from the day I placed my call with the Microsoft support staff to the day I received my replacement console. I am up to the NMPD HQ level on campaign right now and the game is running excellent with the console I have received.

 • Mine just arrived. I think it's a refurb, as it has a 'repair date' on the back of the case instead of a manufacture date... so it's posing as a 2009 machine.

 • K, so they repaired my 360 but I would I'm still getting DRE. Some people said to take out my hard drive so I did it and it worked, I was able to continue playing beyond the point of DRE. When I try to play using my hard drive it gives me DRE so I tried using my brother's hard drive and it works perfectly. I'm thinking of buying a memory card for the time being and need to see about getting my hard drive repaired. Does anyone know how I would go about getting my hard drive repaired or replaced? • To those of you who are recieving new consoles, could you post the date of our originals consoles? I hope they are at least being fair about it. Actually, fair would be everyone gets a new console. That being said, a serial number from 2006 with brand new hardware inside is always possible from a refurbishment center, I just hope it happens.

 •
Posted by: TMJW Hello everyone, Great News! (read below) I received my replacement console and it has fixed this disk unreadable error. Background: I like many others suffered from many of the problems mentioned here (performance lag (video and sound), very long load times, freezing and eventually disk unreadable errors rendering the game unplayable). I stayed in the background watching this thread waiting for a resolution. Finally there was communication from Bungie to call Microsoft. The process was painless and I received my new console today with a 2009 date. It looks brand new and it runs much quieter. I tested ODST and the game runs perfectly and has totally resolved this issue. Thank you to Bungie for the communication and to Microsoft for fixing this problem to my satisfaction. Enjoy ODST!
I think I am screwed. The one I am getting back has a 2006 date.

 • Sent my 360 in on 10/24 and it has been in repair status since Monday. So it looks like the repairs are taking longer than first thought, or maybe they are just getting a large number of machines in at once. I just hope this fixes the problem and I'll be playing ODST this time next week. I'll update when I get the box back. A big THANK YOU to Urk for the updates and letting us know whats going on.

 • Some how, I managed to install ODST on my hardrive on my xbox and now when I play it, it works perfectly, like a normal game. Mythic disc doesn't work though, but was able to get to the main menu this one time and got my final vidmaster for recon. So right now I'm happy and looks like I might not buy the game. I'm glad I borrowed it before I decided to buy it. Good luck to anyone who still has the disc unreadable or whatever is going on.

 • Ok, finally got the box from Microsoft, with instructions, foam, a little bag to put the console in. I don't know why they discontinued that part of the repair process, because it gives me everything I need. Anyway, shipped it off just 30 minutes ago. Hope it gets fixed... or I get a new console. Either way, I'm happy.

 •
Posted by: Exspartan 138 Why be pissed at Bungie? It isn't their fault our Xboxs don't work.
They should have tested the game that they wrote. Ultimately it is Microsoft's problem to fix, but Bungie is also responsible since it should have come up in testing. You don't just test against the newest machine with 1 configuration, you test all possible configurations. They missed one.

 •
Posted by: Westrunner UPS is showing mine as delivered, but Microsoft doesn't acknowledge the pick up yet. I paid for my own shipping because they kept giving me the previously used tracking numbers and my UPS store and driver wouldn't take them. Took a full week to go from Nevada to Texas. Hopefully it gets back faster. I'd just be happy if Microsoft would acknowledge they have it.
I see a potential problem in that the slip Microsoft gives you also has the service record number for your case, so they can quickly scan that number and know what the case is and how to proceed. Making your own label without the service record number would eviditly slow down the repair process. On that note, long story short, some confusion with the eta length now has me waiting for ANOTHER label from Microsoft. So this process is taking me over a week to get resolved, and the damn 360 hasn't even left the door yet.
