Along with thousands of other unfortunate people, my Halo ODST disc became unreadable for countless times during a loading screen.
There is nothing wrong with the disc, other than that the new version of DVDs are not very compatible with supposedly "older" 360s.
If this happens to you, try downloading it to your hard drive. This only seem to work for a [b]very slim amount [/b] of owners though, because if it doesn't work, then your console will be unable to read the DVD the second you start it.
Also, there is [b] another slim chance [/b] for it to work: If you can get one of your friends to host a lobby and then launch the game for you, it may just work. However, you will not be able to play the game solo.
If the above doesn't work doesn't work, or if you just want to express your problems, then I suggest you message the user: Test Ninja Alpha, following the format below.

If you are not to sure about this problem, then the only sure-fire way to be reimbursed is to return your copy to your game retailer [i]as soon as possible[/i].
When or if Bungie fixes this problem, you could rebuy the game and see if it works.

Since you're in the researchin' mood, you won't find it too difficult to drum up instances of DRE at just about every major title release as well.

We've got an open channel for you to communicate with our test team in the first post and we'd like you to stay in contact with support if you've already opened a trouble ticket. I'm with you guys i will not be buying anymore games made by Bungie and it may not be much but i also have 7 friends that i game with and they aren't going to buy Bungie if i don't its pointless if one us can't play Bungie ripped off enough of our money that i'm sure they don't care but thats fine they lost 8 customers and thats good enough for me. Good luck Bungie but i hope you guys crash and burn this is pathetic and you're right no company could sell something and have this many people have problems without being sued. There should be some form of reprimand

It's been a month since the game released. Most people don't even care about playing the game anymore, we are simply worried that our 360's will work with future games (hell, and even past games). Well guys, if nothing comes of this soon (and no sort of compensation to those of us experiencing hell with it), remember, Halo Reach will be out in (likely) a little over a year. Vote with your wallet. Besides, if they have had so much time with such a small game as this (since Halo 3 released) and have this many problems, think of what could happen with Reach and even less time. Yea, I'm probably going to return mine before it breaks my Xbox. Buy Boarderlands and MW2 and maybe get this after its fixed and in a bargain bin.

Yeah, a few of the games I play get an error now because of ODST. Never had problems prior to it. It's likely the last Halo FPS I will buy because this is trash. The game was alright, but nothing to write home about when it worked, and definitely not worth losing the ability to play most future games like Forza 3, L4D2, Modern Warfare 2, etc., which I fear may happen. I am so angry that I spent $60 on this when Borderlands releases tomorrow...and there seems to be no way to get a refund for it now. What a headache.

Just wanted to say that I do have a 20 gig HDD, one of the originals from the first sets of Xboxs. I'm now having issues with every game I play. Gears of War freezes and gets random DREs, Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty: World at War have a lot of random content errors and freezes a lot, and I still get errors with Halo 3 occasionally. Looks like my Xbox is slowly dying because of ODST.

The fact that Microsoft and Bungie can't figure this out is pathetic and sad. Do they need to hire somebody from SONY so we can get this fixed? So all our computer software is designed by microsoft and they can't figure this little problem out. How is it Sony did that much better of a job designing a system? I'm not sure i want to buy another system from these jokers.

Short story: I am still playing through the campaign using a second silver account. I am able to play the game from the original [i]reformatted[/i] 20G HDD up to Mission 03 so far. I cannot play the game off the [i]reformatted per MS Tech Support[/i] 60G HDD I bought last year, although in this configuration I can play up to Mission 03 off the DVD drive. The game plays fine off the HDD on my friends 2008 Pro (60G) and another friends 2009 Elite. I have a 1st generation 360, MFG: 09-10-2005. Upgraded the original 20G drive to a Pro 60G end of 2008.[/b] The following text is a response to Test Ninja Alpha's request for information questions are in the block quote boxes. [quote]1. Specifically, so far it died/dies at the end of Mission 01 and Mission 03. Don't remember how I got past mission 01, most likely started the game over from the last checkpoint the next day. Reinstalled the game save(from MU) then ODST to the hdd. Restarted the game, still dies at the end of mission 01 and mission 03. Here is the process I used to do this: Hold the sync button on the front of 360 itself and then hit the power button on the console and continue holding the sync button until the dashboard came up. The controller was NOT on during this process. I should also note that during testing without the hdd, with an MU installed (game save and profile on it), the system wanted to download an update. I did not install this update. After reinstalling the hard drive and performing the process with the sync button, I was not asked to download the firmware upon game bootup. Interesting just wanted to note it (this is answered in the latest Oct 18 edit below). Can now play Halo 3 - however it died near the end of the first mission with the disk unreadable error. At least the game started... -- END EDIT Sept 26 -- -- EDIT Sept 27 Halo 3 is working fine off the hdd - at least thru the first three missions when using my xbl account and a second silver account setup for testing purposes. -- END EDIT Sept 27 --[/i] [i]-- EDIT Sept 28 -- Took the disk to a friends, who has a newer Pro (2008) and we were able to play through most of the campaign without error. I say most because I wanted to finish it at home, on MY console so I could get the achievements! It obviously isn't the disk. Brought the game home and decided to give disk 2 a try and guess what, it works fine. Forgot how much fun H3 MP was. Cleared the cache, restarted the game from the beginning because I had trashed the save I had on my MU and still dies at the end of Mission 01, altho I was able to get past it the next day and now died near what I think is the end of 04. More to come but this took most of the day including typing this out...[/b] I decided that not hearing any updates from MS on this, I'm tired of waiting and thought I'd try some new stuff. I have a transfer cable and a willing friend who has a large MU to save his profile and gamesaves on. We then transferred my drive to his and in the process, my 60G drive was formatted (like MS Tech wanted me to do during my call). Reinstalled the disk to my 360, copied my secondary profile from my MU to the HDD, installed ODST to the HDD and fired it up. ODST started, as the first cutscene was showing, at the overhead shot of the ODST's at the map before they meet Dare, the sound cuts out. This isn't good. The scene finishes as the door to the dropship closes, Disk Unreadable error (clean? the disk, reboot the system). Crap. Reboot the system, restart ODST, exact same issue. Uninstall ODST from the HDD. Start game, game runs. Play until Mission 03. Let's test it again. Install to HDD, start ODST. Game error as paragraph above. Isn't going to play from the HDD. Copied the game save to MU. Restarted system and ODST. Same problem. Uninstall ODST. Restart system and ODST. Plays fine from game save on MU and HDD. Try something else... Install original 20G HDD. Format it just to keep things the same. Install xbl update. Install ODST and such as described in paragraph above. Game PLAYS! Save profile and game save to HDD. Game Plays! Uninstall 20G drive. System won't allow login to XBL due to no HDD or MU as an update needs to be applied. Start ODST from DVD w/o MU. Game plays. Install MU, Start ODST from DVD with MU (Still can't login to XBL due to not enuf space on MU for update). Game plays. [b]SO, for now, I am playing the game using the 20G drive. I'll update this thread as I progress while keeping my fingers crossed. I'll be re-transfering my 60G drive data back onto it tonight and seeing if I can play ODST from it installed on the HDD at a later date. ALSO, IF MS ASKS YOU TO FORMAT YOUR DRIVE, DON'T DO IT. The game was playable (if you can call it that but at least it started!) on my 60G drive BEFORE I formatted it, which I now wish I had NOT done. Waste of time. What is worse, is when I went back to restart the game, thinking I would be at the last checkpoint before picking up the detonator, oh no, I'm back at Kizingo Blvd, last checkpoint before you finish it - I am so tired of playing that section! I even have the Finished Kizingo Blvd. achievement to prove it but noooooooo. -blam- I give up, I've tried everything and to no avail. I'll wait for a fix or play it at my buddies house when I can. If you want MW2, maybe buy it for ps3 since the online is free :) Anyway, now the DRE is conpletely random. It pops up on one particular map, then it works the next time I boot it up.

Sometimes the disc tray won't open, and it randomly freezes.

my whole xbox is fried now. idk if odst did it or if it was that update but now my xbox wont connect to xbox live and the tray wont open. it is an old console but it appears that i will now be shelling out $300 for a new elite so i can play modern warfare 2. the temptation to buy a ps3 instead is so great

Ok, status report: Now my Halo 3 multiplayer disc is working without a DRE. IDK what's going on. It's different everytime. If the problem was consistent, we could pinpoint the problem faster. This is weird.

It is a shame, this happened to me the day it came out, everyone was telling me at work and school how much they loved it, and im just like "Yeh, k Awesome" Works now though.

Alright so my ODST works now after I returned it to gamestop twice...the only problem is now the second disc (multiplayer) is cutting out on sound and is giving DRE whenever a match finishes online. It is acting just like it did with Halo 3 when i originally got it....Halo is the only game that gives me this crap, most likely Halo 3 in general since Halo Wars, Halo:CE and Halo 2 work like new. It seems like there is a slight (VERY SLIGHT) circle/ on like every single one of my games that i play online...again halo is the only one fragile enough to have an issue i mean come on...these discs need to be able to withstand wear and tear. I think i might just return the game and just wait for MW2

It just must be an update that affected certain xboxs. You know, maybe like just a few faulty things worked there way in or something. Who knows.

I don't know why, but now I'm getting the DRE on Mass Effect. So now I can't play Halo or ME. This sucks. Whatever is causing this error is either something Microsoft did, like an update, or all of our systems suddenly stopped working around the same time. I'm guessing it's the former.

I got DRE on my 2008 Elite. I had an old 20GB Core system which had RROD some time ago, and I found the X-Clamp fix videos on Youtube, thought I'd give that a go... And it works. I can play ODST on my 2006 Core, after the X-Clamp fix, no issues (except for lack of HDMI which makes my eyes bleed)

its been about 2 weeks since i returned halo and now my forza 3 demo and brutal legend demo work fine(they got DRE after playing halo), so hopefully the full games works fine
