Disc Unreadable [OP UPDATED 10.20.09]
Posted by: urk Here's the official word from our publishing partner. Sorry it took so long for us to get this out to you. We know this issue has been a source of frustration. Thanks for being patient.
We are aware of a very small number of customers reporting that their copy of Halo 3 ODST is causing a "disc read" error, which cannot be corrected by Bungie. Microsoft is fully prepared to address this issue via customer support. If you are receiving this error, please contact Microsoft customer support at 1-800-4MY-XBOX for troubleshooting assistance.
If you experience any issues or difficulties via the official support channel, please private message me directly.
Along with thousands of other unfortunate people, my Halo ODST disc became unreadable for countless times during a loading screen. There is nothing wrong with the disc, other than that the new version of DVDs are not very compatible with supposedly "older" 360s. If this happens to you, try downloading it to your hard drive. This only seem to work for a very slim amount of owners though, because if it doesn't work, then your console will be unable to read the DVD the second you start it. Also, there is another slim chance for it to work: If you can get one of your friends to host a lobby and then launch the game for you, it may just work. However, you will not be able to play the game solo. If the above doesn't work doesn't work, or if you just want to express your problems, then I suggest you message the user: Test Ninja Alpha, following the format below.
Posted by: Test Ninja Alpha Since different people can have slightly different issues, we want to get an idea of the various issues that people are seeing individually. For those of you having problems similar to this, please PM me the following: 1. A brief description of your specific problem and what you've tried to fix it. Please do not recap the thread. 2. Remove your hard drive and play through the same sections of ODST that are failing. Does that make a difference? 3. Put in Halo 3 and play through a the first few campaign missions (on easy, it'll go quick). Do you see the same behavior as in ODST, or does it function perfectly?
If you are not to sure about this problem, then the only sure-fire way to be reimbursed is to return your copy to your game retailer as soon as possible. When or if Bungie fixes this problem, you could rebuy the game and see if it works. ****EDIT: 10.2.09****
Posted by: urk Sorry about the continued delays, dudes (and ladies). We're in touch with Microsoft and they're telling us that you should be calling 1-800-4-MY-XBOX to get tickets up and going. They're still not 100% locked in on the issue, but they are making progress. But no matter what the problem is, they've assured us the resolution will be handled through their support center. If you are told by a customer service rep that they will not help you or that you should be going elsewhere for support, please ask them for their Customer Service Request # and report it to me directly via PM. Again, we know this sucks hard. Hopefully they can zero in on the problem and get you all up and working asap.
If you really want to contribute, please perform the above. And if you happen to get on the phone with an "angry" customer support employee, you should ask for their Customer Service Request #, so they feel more obligated to help you, and all of us with this problem. ****EDIT: 11.16.09****
Posted by: urk
Posted by: DEACON01 Incase many of you didn't know, but Halo 3 did have a similar problem with its campaign mode.
Since you're in the researchin' mood, you won't find it too difficult to drum up instances of DRE at just about every major title release as well. And we're not turning a deaf ear (or a blind eye). We understand that it seems that way, but we're frustrated too. We've got an open channel for you to communicate with our test team in the first post and we'd like you to stay in contact with support if you've already opened a trouble ticket. We're still in direct contact with our publisher as well to try to resolve this as quickly as possible, but unfortunately we don't have much to offer at this time, hence the silence. And yeah, I know that's aggravating for the people who can't play.
****EDIT: 11.20.09****
Posted by: urk Here's the official word from our publishing partner. • I am on the phone with them right now on hold to go to the person who is supposed to get my FREE repair started. Yes, I waited 4 weeks and am willing to wait 3 more to get an Xbox that will be fixed. This is all I wanted, a free repair. Also they said that the repair is actually a patch that is going on the Xbox and then they will test every media type and Halos on it to make sure it works and then send it back. I then asked why not through just Xbox LIVE and he said since only around 100 people are having the issue a full patch is harder to do or something. Anyways I get it fixed for free and they said they will test it before sending it back too. [Edited on 10.21.2009 6:25 PM PDT]

 • Same experience as you, static. They said they're mailing me the shipping label in 3-5 days and I have to find my own box, take it to UPS, and I'll get my console back in 2-3 weeks. Oh and do not ship it with the hard drive, any accessories, or cables attached. Free of charge, baby! That's what I like. 2-3 weeks is just an inconvenience. I just love free stuff.

 • Just got off the phone with support, call went well and only lasted 26min. First tech "Niles" ran me through the normal tests but I told him I had called a few weeks back and already checked for scratches, even returned the disc and got a new one and I told him I removed all my mem cards and hard drives last time. he was very cooperative. He then went over my account with me, confirmed my email, phone, address and serial number. He then put me on hold for a few minutes while he contacted "David" a resolution specialist who briefly confirmed the steps we had taken. less than a minute. He then asked me what did / did not work with the game from my experience. I gave him brief details and I must have satisfied his criteria. He told me that my warranty had expired on 04/22/2007 BUT due to special circumstances I would receive this repair for free. I said "Hmmm sounds like there is something really wrong to have my xbox fixed two years out of warranty for free. Do you know what is wrong with it?" and his reply was somewhat marketing-ly dismissive but to sum it up he said that if I send it in it will undergo some diagnostic tests and any defective or broken equipment / components would be replaced free of charge to me. he then gave me a reference number and told me where to get a shipping label and he also told me I would have to find my own box and to take it to a ups store and to expect getting it back in 2 - 3 weeks. Whole call only lasted 26 min. Im pretty happy that at least if there is a cover up or a defect they are going to take care of it for me for free. the inconvenience of waiting sucks but at least Ill have a freshly reconditioned xbox when it comes back.

 • This is my first post on these forums. I completed ODST a few weeks ago and had no problems with this disc read error. But when I put the Mythic disc in, within a week or so, I was having massive freeze up issues in the middle of matchmaking games. So I searched the issue last night and found my way here. I decided to try Batman AA and the same freeze issue happened right away which matches the symptoms people are talking about. Are any of you seeing the issue with the Mythic/matchmaking disc? I have the extended service plan at Best Buy so I'm taking my console their tonight and getting a new one, just to be sure. My question is, is this going to be resolved anytime soon for new consoles? I don't want to bring a new one home, decide to play ODST in a couple weeks and get this issue again. Thanks

 • As soon as I send it back there's a solution... That figures...

 • Well I finally tried and called XBOX support after following the thread and waiting for some other resolution. Luckily it was a painless 20 minute call the rep didn't make me jump through hurdles after I explained the problem and told him all I had already tried and was then escalated to another level of support. The resolution I was given is indeed sending it in for a repair. Seeing as I have a launch day console I was long out of warranty but they did tell me for this special case I was being given a free repair. So that's my case. I would suggest that anyone having this problem call support because it doesn't seem any other solution is coming for us.

 •
Posted by: Colonel Frag Maybe I should call them to see if they say to send it in. But I forgot my damn case number. -blam!-!.
The Serial ID of your Xbox Live Console should be printed on the back side of your console, right about the Video/Audio output jacks and the ethernet jack.

 • So the resolution is a free XBOX repair, from what I'm hearing. Except I haven't heard anything from the phone calls I've received. Then again, I haven't received one in the last 4 days. Maybe I should call them to see if they say to send it in. But I forgot my damn case number. -blam!-!.

 • Has anyone that didn't get a resolution yesterday/last night received a resolution today? Did you get a call from MS? Just curious, I've heard nothing.

 •
We have to send our console in? For one game? There are many other more important games I would rather be playing now and in the coming weeks than this. Then it will be gone for 2+ weeks (took me 3 weeks last time). Not to mention the time spent calling and explaining that you're disc is clean and sparkly and you've tried without a hard drive since this is one that likely can't be done online. Urk, please let us know exactly what the resolution is on here so we know whether our tech person has any idea what their doing.
Ditto. Sending the console in for repair as a "solution" to this problem is ridiculous. Also, the fact that this is still not resolved after a MONTH is equally, if not more so, ridiculous.

 • So the big question for me now is not to get ODST up and running, but will we see more of these "New DVDs" which OP states is the fault? In which case i'm pretty screwed!

 •
Posted by: i cheat 01 Urk - last time I called I was on the phone with MS for an hour. I don't have time for that today. Can't you just post what the resolution is so we all don't have to call or we know what to expect when we call? I will call this weekend.
I suspect, that for legal and/or liability issues, Urk can't state what the resolution is going to be. Plus, MS is their publisher of record so I'm sure there may be some politics involved, just my opinion.

 • IANAHE, but my guess is that some EPROM firmware of some internal hardware component is nawsing up some aspect of the Halo engine. We already know that the engine does some weird I/O stuff (viz.: Halo 3 slower operating off the HDD than off the media, which is so weird I can't imagine how you'd even go about it) You'd be surprised how often commercial software (i.e. that costing millions of bucks a year in maintenance licenses) is screwed up by some 'smart hands' swapping out a disk controller on a server, with some incompatible detail in the FC controller firmware. Speaking as one of the people who has to diagnose that kind of crap, I mean. I can understand this as a feasible reason. And therefore I can understand the 'console service'. Does it make me happy? No. But then, we're talking about software developed by game developers here, not proper programmers. ;-P

 •
Posted by: Fragged31337
Posted by: i cheat 01 Are they charging if we are out of warranty?
I was told by two separate people on the phone that because this is an 'exceptional case', the repair is free, 'even though your xbox is out of warranty'. However, you have to supply your own shipping box (they told me how to print a UPS label off of support.xbox.com, so the shipping is free also)
We have to send our console in? For one game? • I'm being told by the support phone people that the resolution (based on my specific symptoms) is a 'console service'. Got to wonder what this entails... Anyway, I suppose I'll get a coffin in the mail and ship it to 'em. For about the FIFTH time.

 •
Posted by: Bdmitruk Seriously, so has anyone actually gotten some results by calling Microsoft support? Right now it seems like they still have no clue whats going on... if anybody actually gets some real help please post your results for the rest of us!!
I've only been notified by four people who weren't given resolution. If you call and you aren't offered a resolution, please private message me with the ticket ID and a brief description of the support call.

 • So is there a solution or not? Because I'm still getting calls from Microsoft's tech department saying they're still working on it. I mean, since a disc replacement won't work (we've all tried that) and Microsoft isn't going to be all ho-ho-ho on our asses and ship us all new 360s, I'm going to assume the way they're going to fix this is with an update via xbox live. •
Posted by: FallenAngel9 On a side note, I have been needing updates for each game I've played today in order to play online (the updates that come up during the game's initial loading that require you to sign off live). I put in World at War, and needed an update. After I needed to re-download the map packs. The same thing happened for Call of Duty 4 and both Gears of War and Gears of War 2. Is anyone else having this happen to them? I wonder if its like a fix to the other games? I'm a little confused, because the others I've talked to haven't had to update today.
Yes, I have noticed that also with quite a few games, the last week in particular. I've been testing everything I have to make sure they work before spewing out the "huge wall" on page 90. lol. I assumed it had something to do with this, the previous system update or the next update that is coming out in Nov. Don't know but it is something to note. [Edited on 10.21.2009 4:31 PM PDT]
