Are we all in this together?

Okay, so I know Bungie "Took out light level and replaced it with a level based on your overall attack and defense" (Exact Quote), but I can never, and I mean NEVER get gear better than the stuff I already have. I've been asking around my groups to see if anyone else had thoughts like this, and at least 3/4ths of my groups responded yes. Are we all in this together? (no joke intended)
