•
Posted by: AWAL N1nja Wow. You are honestly one of my many heros. Many quotes and so inspiration. (Not that I didn't already have enough. xD) But you brought up something that stumped me. When you reminded us to do all you can in one subject. That got me thinking. I live (typo? Maybe not) lighting and texturing. In fact, I've learned more about that in Autodesk Maya than my teacher knew. :) So that's what I want to be my future. I told him that. And for our Class presentation (for our schools art show) I was quoted. "Texturing is fun. In some cases, it's putting the grass on the ground and the clouds in the sky". Thought of that off the top of my head. Got applauded for it too. :D But anyway! Back to what I was trying to say. If I want to do lighting and texturing, should I just learn all I can about UV Mapping, Photoshop, how light works, all the attributes, etc? Or should I center my knowledge around environment, characters or other things? Please answer this. :)
Yes you can specialize! However, when you are focusing on lighting make certain you have some other braod, marketable skills- like modeling and texturing- so you can get your foot in the door in a much more common production position. Lighting is one of those specialties that can often be handled by the Art Director or in some studios (like ours) by an Environment Artist that has specialized in lighting and has been crowned the king (referring to Justin Hayward of course). Thats really the best way to do it, get in and then prove yourself. So yeah, you can specialize in lighting but make sure you know the other stuff too :) Hope this helps. -v

 • Well, This image was created by a RL Friend of mine (The screenshot of the Elite) for the image search "Definition" or look at Darkrelica189's File Share here. "This one here" Its an alright picture IMO, but good pic for the Article on it. Great Article! Environmental Artist sounds like a great job to do. Get to explore places IRL and copy them into a game!. very well done! but with Cortana and Halo, its all Imagination! Great Job and can't wait to read some more!

 • I had a question about this line............ You SHOULD do a lot of work in ONE specialty - pick one aspect. If you want to be a 3D artist, decide if you want to do characters, environments, or hard-surface versus organic as your primary goal............... Would this rule apply for animation? I want to be an animator in the videogame field. So should I just work on ONE type of animation?

 • What if messing with the "sea monkeys" wound up being a monumental moment in animation. Sometimes it's good to put things on the line at the last minute. If you work for Bungie & think it's the right choice, the fans will believe in you.
Posted by: Mini Waz Also, it was nice to watch a the Bungie team come back from 2 kills down to win 50 - 48 on one of my maps in the Bungie Day playlist :)
I noticed you had a lot of maps on Bungie day. Nice work I really enjoyed them(sorry to get off topic for a second). [Edited on 07.09.2009 10:39 PM PDT]

 • The Cortana level has a really different looking environment more than any other level in Halo 3. It's cool that you helped to work on it. Good job Vic.
