Hello all, for those new guys who may know me by my shitposts and antics, a couple months ago I use to do these "social experiments", where I would ask #offtopic a question with a set of dynamic answers to produce a possible correlation, or just to survey the fine users here in our little corner of the web. I just ask that you reply seriously, or don't reply at all, so we can have some quality discussion. So the topic of the day, conformity. The term is a tad vague, but for all intents and purposes, I would like you to define it for yourself, and choose where you belong. I separated into age groups because I feel like there could be a stigma for or against the term depending on which part of life one is at. I focused on the teenage/young adult years because that is when our perceptions and opinions on things change the most frequently. Would you consider yourself a conformist? And for further inquiry, what is your opinion on the term "conformist?" Negative feelings towards it? Positive? Please comment with your age (or age group if you feel more comfortable doing so) and answer, I just put the poll as a visual aid. And remember, every time you vote in a poll and don't comment, a little kid drops his ice cream on the ground, and unknowledgeable of germs, eats it and dies from a tragic case of e-coli. Think of the children.

      • I asked where these had gone, you answered! Good to see these again Cellar. On topic, probably more of a conformist than not. I see nonconformism as a dead end. You can only rebel for so long before you either get crushed like a grape, or you replace whatever it was you were rebelling against and become the new establishment. Where are the hippies today? In boardrooms and gated communities, voting against minimum wage and for stronger drug laws.

        • I guess, for the most part I conform to certain standards and some stereotypes. Model railroading: I've conformed to prototype modeling with a slight bit of era stretch(common). However I do not fit the standard old guy stereotype at 21. Gaming: I usually have a personal set of behaviors and try to show some form of fairness. Motorcycling: I do wave to fellow bikers, but I'm more aggressive than in my truck. Work: I know my job, I have a set list of actions for the areas I pick. There are others but these are the primary ones for me, I can attempt to elaborate if need be.

        • Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons; what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down... with the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

Follow up question, a couple of people's comments made me think of it. And please, I hate religion threads just as much as the next guy, so let's not turn this into a debate or throw around hateful comments just because you want to be edgy. Do you think religious belief and practice of such is a form of conforming? Are religious followers conformists? Are atheists conformists?

Somehow I feel most of us -- perhaps myself included -- will vote 'no' even when another would gauge we are, using the same standards. *Votes 'no' anyway*

To be completely honest, yes. I don't conform to really stupid shit, but I follow the latest trends in fashion, gaming, and etc. I don't have any negative opinions towards the term really. It's a good way to label the people who like to follow the crowd and separate them from the oddballs and leaders. My only qualm with the word I guess is that it is sometimes confused with adaptation; In the sense that some people only adopt to follow the crowd because it's a genuine necessity. For example, someone who is subject to extreme bullying in school may choose to adapt all the latest trends in order to fit in better elsewhere and escape their past.

              • I fit into established systems of beliefs. I'm pretty easily categorized by a few labels. I like mainstream culture. I don't think most people are stupid or bad. So... definitely not a conformist.

A conformist by definition is "a person who conforms to accepted behavior or established practices." I'm gay atheist and feminist so I'm pretty sure I fall into the opposite of that. And I'm a musician but even in the music world I avoid what's mainstream popular and am more intrigued by jazz bands and small-time avant-gard prog and fusions bands. In fact my username is "Anomaly" (also my stage name) because in science you have paradigms, which are like the established rules, and you have anomalies, which are outliers. If enough anomalies occur it's possible for the paradigm to be changed. I grew up as an "outlier." I never fit in, never had a lot of friends, never followed what was trendy, popular, whatever. I just kind of did my own thing. And furthermore I hope that I can do my part to shift some of the paradigms of modern culture.

Nah. Considering things in general, I'm an oddball compared to most, and I prefer it that way.
