A poll about weapons becoming obsolete after TTK

I'm seeing a lot of people get really worked up because year one weapons and gear are likely going to become obsolete in TTK. This is how games with a similar loot structure have been doing things for over a decade, and it's worked out pretty good for them. Typically a game like this will make all gear obsolete with every expansion, but bungie has compromised and made it annual (from the looks of things) I hope I'm not alone in saying this NEEDS to happen. Otherwise the game (which is already getting stale) will get really stale. It's a really nice change of pace when this happens. The meta totally changes, (thorn, Gjally are no longer a conversation in end game) Everyone is back to zero, so it should be easier to find raid groups for those who had problems previously. What wow has done in past has been: Give you gear that was leaps and bounds better than the previous raid as a reward for the first story mission of the new expansion, and all others. It's nice, you have a reason to do the story, and at the end you have everything you need to be successful in the first few bosses of a raid. It takes a few weeks to accumulate gear from those bosses to go ahead and finish the raid. This really brings everything down to skill, you have to focus on boss mechanics and team work if you want to get things done. Because unless you complete the raid, you're never going to get the gear you need to hit max level, you NEED to do it a few times with underpowered gear. I personally hope they go ahead and leave all year one guns behind in year one.
i do NOT work for bungie, as I know that's coming, lol.
"Edit" 1: this poll honestly went exactly opposite of how i thought it would. Seems people with experience in games with this loot system don't want it, and people who don't have that experience think it will be fine. My position is unchanged, but the numbers don't lie. "Edit" 2: this poll has swung and went exactly how I thought it would, lol.

  • Weapons in an FPS are completely different than weapons in an MMO like WoW. The guns we use in shooters define our play styles. Weapons in MMOs give you stats. They are incomparable. When I got Word of Crota, it was a hand cannon with a higher attack rating than my Fatebringer could get at the time. But I still used Fatebringer because it felt better to me. In an MMO, I would easily and freely replace a weapon with one that has better stats without a care in the world. Also, Bungie is on this weird quest to make guns worse by removing some of the best perks and replacing some with ones that increase certain stats but reduce others. Vanilla legendaries are miles better that TDB and HoW (if you got a good roll, which was harder at the time). VoG weapons are in a totally different league than CE, and especially PoE, guns. Only the Trials weapons can really compete, but they're a massive pain to get. TL,DR comparing weapons in an FPS to weapons in an MMO is apples and oranges, and trying to cram the MMO gear treadmill into Destiny is asinine. Gunplay is a lot more important to fun gameplay than clicking and hitting keys. Also, newer guns are gradually getting worse, that's why we don't want to lose the ones that are actually good.

    • I dont have any of the endgame guns like fatebringer, but I just got my kellbreaker gloves and boots and now I have to drop them :C I also spent WAY more time than I should on getting perfectly rolled guns when I KNEW they would be obsolete soon XD

    • This is the reason why I will quit Destiny for now. Year one grinder, year one lover. But we get kicked in the nuts for buying directly. Everything we earned hardly is pointless now. New players get the stuff in days, less grinding, less effort. So why put in the time into Destiny, when I can get the full experience end of next summer/fall sometime after the next two DLCs have been released. Buy it cheaper, have less effort and waste less time!

    • I think legendary gear should be incredibly harder to upgrade, like getting a crux was. But exotics should continue like how, cuz of the exotic limit.

    • People are idiots, everyone that jizzed themselves over the fact you could upgrade weapons and armor in HOW failed to realise that doing so made the whole dlc pointless and a complete waste of money. Why bother doing anything if the loot is shit In a loot driven game?

I want to use the new weapons because they are GOOD. Not because we are FORCED to abandon the old ones because of power levels

      • Exotics will most likely stay because hawkmoon and other ps exclusives become available to Xbox at that time.

If the year 2 weapons are better, I'll be fine. But with the dlc weapons being worse than the vanilla weapons so far, I don't have much faith in bungie.

      • It's quite understandable. Like I barely touched any of the new weapons besides Deadshot Luna and Rude Awakening (cosmetic wise)

      • Just let exotics stay powerful as always. Don't really get attached to legendaries.

      • So you're saying you want to do PoE with the weapons you get from the vendor? Cool, cool. And you said WoW have you better shit than the previous expansion which as we all know has never happened yet in Destiny. Bungie is too dumb to be trusted is the long and short of it. All you WoW are free to only use new gear to your hearts desire, so do it and let those who don't like that get the best of both worlds.

        • Completely agree with you, but I don't think they'll make exotics obsolete. They really need to do it with legendary weapons tho.

        • Only if there is 25+ exotic weapons (plus legendaries and crap) if they discontinue everything ten they must add at least the same amount

            • My idea of being the exotics of year one into 2 is that they will be weaker than other weapons we find in the year, and slowly will be phased out as new exotics become available. Hope so at least, otherwise it'll get stale real quick.

            • I still want to use my fatebringer. I've become attached to it after all this time and I don't want it to just sit in the vault.

              • While I agree with you on all points, most people in the Destiny community neither understand nor want progression and would rather use fatebringer for the whole ten year destiny plan.

                • I'm glad that getting weapons will be exciting again. However hopefully new guns will be more VoG style rather than PoE otherwise it's gonna suck losing such good year1 weapons.

                • Do people not understand this is how it was when entering TDB? All vanilla weapons became weak and it forces players to grind for new weapons and search for the new best. When TTK is released odds are our current weapons will be 30 or 40 damage less than TTK weapons and we'll have to work to get and level new gear instead of just getting an etheric light. Main thing I am trying to point out is that this has been done before it's really not that big of a deal.

                  • If you are interested in why the disparity between expected and actual results exists, I would venture the following speculation. You've compared loot in Destiny to loot in WoW, but this comparison isn't entirely valid, because the only meaningful progression in the game after the first story arc is loot driven. Having Gjallarhorn, Fatebringer, or Celestial Nighthawk is more significant to a player than most (but not all, obviously) of the talents in the subclass. Imagine if, along with all of your old weapons becoming obsolete with the release of WoW's next expansion, you also lost every skill you'd learned from your class trainer and had to spend months grinding to get new ones, which may or may not be as effective as the old ones, and which most likely will radically alter the way your class plays. Could you not see people being upset about it then? Honestly, in my opinion Destiny needs to move away from its dependency on a pure loot progression and towards a more RPG oriented skill system. My characters should be learning Firefly and Arc Damage for Handcannons, not carrying around one Fatebringer each. Whether that gets done through an "equip" menu, or through some sort of crafting system, it would effectively solve the controversy and move the game in a direction where MUDflation wouldn't be all that big a deal.
