The Cabal in the room

I want a specific answer to a specific question, why am i and a lot of people paying more for bungies dlc than we should be. DeeJ already answered this question " I did ask this question and I was told something about international trade tariffs and blah, blah, blah. Global Finance is my achilles heel. I'm sorry you're feeling as if we're treating you unfairly. At Bungie, we make games. You can lament Xur and his erratic inventory to me. Other costs of doing business are beyond my reach." https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/82527521/0/0/1 Fair enough but i need more detail. If its about the cost of living in both countries than why are games generally sold at £40/$60. If its about tariffs and things i generally don't understand too well then explain them properly. Call of Duty: Advanced warfare who's publisher is also activision dlc is fair, for ps4 it's $49.99 or £35.99. I have no problem paying £50 for TTK i really enjoy playing the game as long as it would be $75, i don't mind "throwing money at the screen" as long as we all throw the same amount of money at the screen. It feels like Bungie is bending us over a desk and having their way with us. If i continue to support Destiny paying for just at the very least buying two of the smaller dlc a year with the buy two pay £35/$35 (e.g TDB & HoW) for 10 years that's £350 or $350. £350 is worth $549.98. That's $199 more than i think i should be playing. If i diligently buy two smaller dlc at £35 and an expansion at £40 every year that's £750/$750. £750 is $1179. Paying a potential $429 extra for reason's not properly explained to me is unacceptable. I've already pointed out two examples that show the model of exchange is generally fair. If i'm being an idiot then that's fine. I just want someone to explain to me why i feel like i'm being taken advantage of and better yet a very clear explanation from Bungie themselves. I might not understand it, but someone somewhere will and then we can put this issue to bed. Yes no one is asking anyone to buy the dlc but i really do love the game and the fact that's its managed to change alot since launch, i would happily pay more to support it. If you think the current system is fair and live in America would you also be happy to pay more to support it. Edit 1 - I'd just like to thank everyone who's replied so far in this post because the information has been helpful, the article by Cloney was a great read and i urge everyone to have a look.

  • I'd just like to say I appreciate how most Americans have been really supportive toward us in the UK & we're genuinely grateful for that. I do see a few Americans, either trolling or just being smartarses, saying the price difference isn't such a big deal & we're just being cheap. Fair enough. But bear in mind there are two ways Bungie could make this fairer. 1) Bring the price down to about £32-£35 for the UK so we're paying the same as the American players. 2) Put the price up to $65 in the US so they're paying the same as us. If $25 isn't such a big deal would you pay it yourselves?

There is no ignorance on behalf of Activision at play. They know full well what they're doing and chose to price TTK at GBP 40.00 because they either have research data to prove people will buy it or because their financial projections say they need to price it at GBP 40.00 to recoup development costs. It's ridiculous to assume this isn't a deliberate move to wring as much cash out of Destiny's fanbase as possible. Or did you forget that Redbull corporate primer thing about the Destiny/Redbull promotion that said "Destiny's customers are used to paying a premium for downloadable content."? You're cattle to be milked to them and nothing more. Bungie is the one that tries to pretend you're valuable and appreciated. (Some of that is true, but a lot of it is PR.)

          • http://www.kotaku.com.au/2010/11/why-do-videogames-cost-so-much/ This is from 2010, but I would think most of it is still relevant today, as economics dont change all that much. Though things aren't as bad as they were back then.....a lot of games are still cheaper now than they would've been back then. The biggest thing to change is the digital marketplace, and the fact that games cost exactly the same online, such as with Xbox Live, as they do in the stores. Fact is we're a tiny market compared to others, then issues of import restrictions, lack of competition, taxes and duties etc....and the fact that there is nothing to say that digital must be cheaper than physical. I just dont understand how people can say its not worth the price tag without knowing exactly how much content is in it....everyone is just making assumptions based on the previous DLC, which is just wrong. Sure, they may indicate future content packs....but until you know exactly whats contained in TTK....you cannot definitively say it isn't worth the price. This is all because Bungie are obsessed with drip feeding information to their fanbase, slowly and make it seem like this is the best way to do things and everyone loves the big reveals. Fact is....we dont, you shouldn't release prices before you've let people know how much content they're actually getting. It just doesnt make sense anymore...not with this persistent game type. You need to be constantly engaging with the fanbase more than Once a Week, more than just reeling off numbers and interviewing people in the community. You need to be informing us why this content is worth the price you're asking, not just saying "We believe the value is there". Of course you do Bungie, you're dealing with it every day....you're constantly seeing it take shape and the scope of it, but you don't seem to realise that you're fans aren't engaging with it everyday, seeing it take shape. All we have are the few morsels of information that choose to throw to us....and they cause massive blowups like ones Post-E3. Fact is, there just isn;t enough hard information to make any real judgements on the validity of their pricing vs. how much content we'll be getting for those hard earned dollars. Oh one last thing, this whole thing about the CE DLC not being worth $20.....you're getting 9 items at an average of $2.22USD each. Thats not that bad of a value. Maybe they need to sell them all individually so people can choose what they want to buy out of them.

          • I am totally in agreement that the £40.00 price tag is insane. But that's an Activision thing, I kinda think the whole Luke Smith throw money/that's foreign to me was a nod to them having no control.

            • Can't you just switch regions on your settings and pay whatever the price is in that region?

            • The variable here is the profit margin. If all overhead costs are the same, then increasing price increases profit per unit sold. If you have a total profit you want to earn you have to guesstimate how many units you'll sale and divide that into your overall profit goal to get how much money you have to sale each unit for. So it could be call of duty sells more units, so the profit margin for each unit can be smaller because total profit will be where it needs to be due to more units sold.

                • Thing is, Bungie quite surely doesn't do the pricing; Activision does. So all our Questions should be directed to them. I don't get this either. It just doesn't make any sense. It's like nobody at Activision can do the most basic mathematics. On the orher Hand I feel the need to state that I have worked (notice the past tense) with american Companies. Some of which don't understand why I have a problem with them delivering Goods 3 Months later than what was agreed on. I don't want to hate on US Companies in general or even the citizens but sometimes I get the feeling there's ignorance or idiocy involved.

                  • What I find sad here is that Bungie and Activision seemingly can't afford a single fúcking accountant for this game. So, they take a number, slap each of the different symbols on for the different currencies and sell it. Europe is also having these problems as the euro is stronger than the dollar (even with Greece fúcking the euro over) Australia is also being hit, though they had the first two dlcs fairly priced, they're being charged an extra $20 AUD (their total DLC cost is $70 AUD (which is about £35 through exchange rates as £1~$2 AUD) So £35=£40=$40....BUNGIE! MATHS!

                    • It's called fair market value and it's not bungies job to explain it to you. The price of the dlc is similar to what the U.K. Market charges for that product. The price in the U.S. Is the same. It would actually violate international trade laws to sell it for less than fair market because bungie is a foreign company in the U.K.

                      • Let me tell you about a cool study that was done a few years ago. They would tell 2 people that they had $10. They offered one person $3 and the other person $7. But, in order for either of them to get their money, BOTH of them had to agree to the amounts given. You know what happened, more often than not, the person getting $3 would refuse the deal because it "wasn't fair." That's right, people would turn down 3 free dollars just because someone else was getting more free money than them! This is exactly what we're seeing here. People are more worried about the deal that OTHER people are getting, instead of evaluating the price and content for themselves. The answer may be something as simple as "US citizens get a lower price because they are US citizens." Just like GM employees get better prices on cars. Or waiters get free drinks at the end of a shift. Or nurses get free healthcare at their own office. I don't know why other countries have to pay more. If I was in another country, I would certainly be evaluating the price versus benefit. But, I would NOT be bellyaching about how other people are getting lower prices.

An Xbox one in Canada is $350 give or take and in the UK (Game) it was 350GBP - given the current exchange rates $350 CAD = 180 GBP - so you guys in the UK pay double for consoles that we do in Canada.
