They practically hit you over the head with it.
She's from a future where the darkness won, her and a number of others were able to jump back in time to try and fix key moments of history so that humanity isn't wiped out.

If you read the inserts from the collectors edition of the Taken King, it is heavily hinted that she is Maya Sundaresh, who worked with Doctor Shim. At least, one of the copies of Maya that the Vex mind made in it's multiple simulations, which were put into exo bodies when they finally escaped. She is also Cayde 6's lost love.

1) Maya being the stranger is just a theory. 2) no it doesn't. If she is the stranger, that means she could be hundreds of years old by the time she goes back in time.

2) if she is the stranger she less than 100 when her simulation entered the vex network. That said, when inside the network she would have existed outside of space and time, so she could have glimpsed the future and the past at once. Operating on the idea that a human consciousness could even comprehend this level of omnipotence, she would take that new knowledge to the point she deemed as ideal for changing time. So all that's left to discuss is "The Merchant and The Alchemist" can she change time or is her intervention already pre determined?
