It's going to be free to Windows 7 and 8 users at launch though.

That is true, but still, a subscription for an operating system doesn't seem beneficial for anybody.

It could happen, but they could also tie it in with Office 365 (like they have everything else). Either way, I like the new idea of constantly updating as they go, rather than the sporadic massive changes.
