Building Your Own PC Gaming Rig: A How To Guide.

Many out there in PC land have opted to buying a Pre-Made computer from companies like eMachines, Dell, And Compaq. I know this because they come into my shop all the time under the arms of unhappy, unsatisfied gamers who thought the deal they were getting was great...until they tried to play graphically instensive games (like Halo PC) on them. To avoid such annoying ( and costly ) visits to your local computer repair-guy. Try and build your own PC. Its really not that difficult, and after you have done it you can show your buddies how smart you are with your custom built rig. First off you cant be afraid of destroying the expensive electronics components that go into the computer. This will probably just make you nervous enough to actually do it. Computers are like linkin-logs that have electricity going through them. It is alot easier than you may think, and computer parts though made of realtively sensitive parts, are usualy quite durable. Second you need money. Depending on what kind of machine you want to build..from the extreme to the minimum sytem requirements for Halo PC. This whole adventure depends on how much you are able to spend. Fortunately when building your own system you can buy the parts from different vendors offering specials or lower prices on the parts you want, and you can get the parts induvidualy, and stack them up in a cool dry place, until the day you have all the parts to put togather. Thus making it able to budget out your final build months in advance (i.e. you buy a part or few parts a month till you got a whole computer). The major (needed) components that you need to buy for you machine are: 1 Power supply (PS)... The more fans the better. keeping this item cool in your case is VERY important as it probably will create the most heat in your case. It is best to get this item from a well known company (antec, coolermaster, thermaltake, soyo, enermax) as the more obscure ones ussually skimp on good components. If you plan on getting a newer graphics card they usually require thier own independent molex 5W dongle ( the 4 pin plug cables ), so make sure that the power supply has plenty of them. Some have independent SATA power dongles if that is what you plan on using. It is always to have a higher wattage PS so its not always working at its max. Having a larger power supply than needed insures you wont have to upgrade in the future. 1 Case (with or without power supply, made of Steel/plastic, aluminum...they come in differnet sizes and shapes depending on what kind of system you are building) 1 Motherboard ( there are alot of brands and configurations, its really up to you on which one you buy depending on what kind of system you are building ) 1 CPU (Central Processing Unit) Come in many different types and speeds, what you get will have to match your motherboards specifications. 1 Graphics Card (from the mild to the wild this is what makes the eye candy happen) Alot Alot of motherboards have integrated graphics on board, avoid buying one of these as they ususally dont have alot of power play graphically intense games (like Halo PC). 1 CD/ROM or DVD/ROM (depending on what you are wanting to do with your pc one or the other should do) Alot of new games are coming out on DVD making the number of disks in the package less, and also with the DVD/ROM you can watch movies with a program made to do so (alot of DVD/ROM drive have such programs bundled in the box) 1 Floppy Drive...now this is an old fashioned component that allows boot disks to function if you are running and OS that requires it. Or if you plan on ever doing anything in DOS. 1-? Hard Drive('s) ...Now some people have alot of games, or music, or videos, or (giggle) other questionable digital media. So what ever you are going to have on the storage drive('s) of the system, "how much" you have depends on how big and how many hard drives you have in the machine. Usually it best to have more than you think you will need, as a full hard- drive is ussually not a good thing when a game requiring 3gigs of space on your drive is in your CD/ROM telling you "insufficient hard drive space". Also having more than one drive is best, because the OS (operating system i.e. windows) requires a pretty big space on a single hardrive, leaving the rest for the games and other programs you choose to put on this drive. So getting a larger primary HD (hard drive) is ussualy a better choice, and having a second storage HD for things like your music, videos, and (giggle) other stuff. 1-?? Sticks of RAM.. depending on your motherboard you may be limited to, or have alot of options on what kind of RAM you buy and how much your mobo ( Motherboard ) can have. I would always say that you stay with Mobo Maufacturers recommendation as far as what kind and what configuration of RAM to use. 1(or ?) Soundcard... Now Alot of newer tech has placed digital 6.1-8.1 surround sound onboard most if not all the new mobo's(motherboards). this is great if you have a home theater system with inputs for such things. If you only use headphones, or dont have to cash to dole out on such things, this is still ok as the onboard sound can be configured to 2 channel stereo. If you want the most high-tech surround experience available, take a look at the line of audigy2 ZS cards from Creatve Labs, this has a little thaing called EAX that makes the surround sound a part of your games. Personally when I heard the ejected shells from my shotgun bouncing around the hard floor of the library in Halo PC, I was sold on the fact that my 6.1 surround and audigy ZS Platinum Pro was now VERY worth what I had spent. Now you should be ready to start buying. Here are a few links to help you make your choices. This is my favorite as far as cases and power supplies go. They are american made and have a great warrantee, plus other companies (try) to copy the advances made by this company. http://www.antec.com This is by far the most well known and oldest company selling cases and cooling solutions. http://www.coolermaster.com Here are a few more Case Makers: http://www.thermaltake.com/psu.htm http://www.lian-li.com http://www.chieftec.com http://www.kingwin.com Here are a few links to Mobo (motherboard) makers. Some makers are newer at the game but have great products. Always make sure you product has a good warrantee that will be around for a while. computer technology is like any other (there are mistakes made) so just in case you are sent a lemon its always nice to know you can get another new one sent to you. http://www.asus.com http://www.msicomputer.com/ http://www.soyousa.com http://www.giga-byte.com http://www.abit-usa.com http://www.biostar-usa.com http://www.dfi.com.tw/index_noflash.jsp http://www.leadtek.com There are a few different Mobo makers. which one you choose will rely on what option/configuration you want your motherboard to have. Here ae a few links to different Graphics card makers. Depending on how much you are willing to spend and what kind of computer you are building will show you you what kind of card you will buy. http://www.evga.com http://www.pny.com/products/verto/ http://www.bfgtech.com/ http://www.xfxforce.com/index-interim.php http://www.leadtek.com http://www.gainward.com This is a link to a site that reviews hardware with a serious purpose to find out what kind of value and performance is possible, and if the component is actually worth the plastic and metal it is made of: http://www.tomshardware.com on this site you can get ratings that actually have real people looking at what is actually worth buying, now its not always what you should buy, but it gives you an idea on what major (or unknown) brands are the most reliable, and worth your money. Now that you have checked out the ratings on different brand you are probably wondering where in the heck you are going to start looking for all these parts, well a site that alot of people use is: http://www.pricewatch.com This is a site that other re-sellers use to advertise thier specials, and get new customers by beating out the prices of thier competitors. Another site that helps you choose which one of the pricewatch.com re-sellers is the right one for you (as far as how good they are at re-selling) is: http://www.resellerratings.com *finding a good price is one thing, but finding it at a reseller that has great reviews is better Now that you have all that you need to find the components to build your computer. Your gonna need a little info on what to do with them once you have them. Every computer is basically the same to put togather, but at the same time they are all little different. So to give you a blanket effect as to the essential computer building instructions I will turn you over to a page that not only has VERY helpfull instuctions, it also has pictures. Here is Reg Stevens helpful guide to building your own PC: http://www.regstevens.co.uk/build.htm *now this link is almost a year old so if any newer tech stuff is troubling you just post here and I will do my best to help you out. Congradulations I hope this helped you to realize your dreams of a killer custom built rig, both this topic and coylters' guide to the PC will go hand in hand like gleeful schoolgirls to help you on your way to building your new computer. • In fact 2 xeon cpu can ban a better option for gaming than a single high end p4. You can use the first cpu to run all the windows and basic stuff and use the other one 100% dedicated to your game. But this is realy expensive... •
Posted by: Xnyl Thanks, that helped a lot. But that raises another question, "What about the motherboard?" What motherboard is best for AMD, & which is good for P4. And ofcourse it has to have a good RAM & Video Slot (x8).
Well the answer to this question depends a lot on your budget, your needs as a computer user (what you are going to use it for), and how much you trust "new" technology (PCI-Express, 64 bit CPU's). Personally I stick with the major names (links to these brands are listed in the original post). I like warrantees, and if you have a motherboard blow a capacitor or other integral piece of circuitry, then you will too. Also If you are building a whole new system you have to choose your mobo (motherboard) on what kind of other hardware you want to attach to it (i.e. SATA, RAID, PCI-X, DDR2), and if you want things like gigabit LAN, or 8.1 surround-sound. These questions must first be answered by you (and your wallet) before you should choose your mobo. If this is just a replacement of an older mobo/CPU, and you are going to be connecting your current hardware to a newer mobo/CPU; then you have to make sure that the newer mobo is compatible with your older equipment. For a great "new" mobo Asus has the A8V; this mobo is for the new socket 939 64bit athlon/FX chips from AMD it supports 4gb of RAM, has an onboard WIFI-G expansion slot, and gigabit LAN network interface connector. Not bad for a new mobo :) Still you should shop around and see what other companies are producing before you buy anything. This way you can match a mobo type up with the needs you have as a user.

Secondly this information (and most of the questions) are coming from the U.S./Canada. So Flaming people about how "euro" people can buy hardware for less is also not showing any intelligence. We in the U.S. have to wait for our hardware to arrive on a big boat from places like China, and Taiwan. It is in these places the skilled hands of our Asian brothers are building the next best thing for our voracious new-technology-hardware appetites. We here in the U.S./ Canada are very appreciative to these hard working men and women, and also show our appreciation to the people on the ship that bring them over this big watery thing called the Pacific or Atlantic Oceans. To show how appreciative we are we pay things like taxes, and levys, and a list of other appreciation tokens to people like our government (who always need cash for some reason) so that these products flow freely into our glorious nation, and into our hot little hands. So that being said some times the prices people get in Europe are a little cheaper, and the fact that you may be purchasing non-brand-name parts may have something to do with it also. So instead of flaming someone here in this topic I ask that you please post something that actually has something to do with the topic (i.e. building new computers..not the price to do so) . Thanks for the input :)

Also Intel makes a 64bit Itanium CPU built for workstations. Dual CPU set-ups are also good for video editing. These dual CPU motherboards dont come cheap though. So if this is what your looking at doing with your new computer then pinch those pennies!

 •
Posted by: Xnyl Oh, & also when building a computer from the ground up do I need to instal an OS?
Your welcome! I saw that many needed help and decided to lend a hand, and Im glad that it is working. Yes you need an OS (operating system). Any of the Microsoft Wiindows OS (except 95) should work just fine with any hardware configuration. If you are a beginner at computer building I would suggest Windows XP (XP Pro if you have the extra cash, but if not then XP Home will do fine), and if you are buying it make sure that you get the version with SP1 (service pack 1) included. This SP1 package makes driver loading easier. The OS is the most important piece of software you will ever buy for your new computer; so keep that disk safe, and make sure no one gets your CD-Key. Good hunting for your new computer hardware, and always make sure your getting the most you can for the price you are paying. If you are curious about any certain aspect just message me, and I will shoot you a message right back.

 • Those LGA cpu are bs, the socket are said to broke after 3-4 cpu removal. BTW all the new feature like ddr 2 are just gimmick and dont give a single % of improvement. The chips are also said to be very hot. • Well first off lets just understand that anything from intel runs very hot. Also that this newer tech still is in the first stages of development. So not alot of other companies are going to buy into until it has proven itself to actually be a good product. Not only those two things, but usually the newest tech goes hand in hand with the newest bugs. You can be excited, thats to be expected, but in the face of 64bit tech from AMD I wouldnt really get that excited. In 5-6 years all computer software will be written for 64bit, it is the natural progression of things. LGA is the new kid on the block since intel is feeling the heat from AMD's socket 939. Now intel is a great company, but i would never buy one of thier processors because of the heat factor. This is my choice, but you may differ on opinion about intel, and that is your choice. Either way I am here to help you put togather a new computer based on what hardware you select.

AND IT CAN PLAY HALO 2 RIGHT WHEN IT IS LAUNCHED!!! =DDDD
Wow you can use your xbox to email people, or pay your bills online, or browse the internet? Wait, Wait.. your xbox can play other massivly multiplayer games (5000 people on a server) like planetside? Whoa you must have a magical genie in that xbox! Its so amazing that I am in disbelief! Geez I wish I had an xbox so it could become obsolete when the new xbox2 comes out and all the games arent compatible with my console... OH WAIT.. I own a killer PC gaming rig that is compatible with almost all forms of video games... not only that but I can open up my PC and "upgrade" it with newer and better parts, but then again I dont have a magical genie inside an xbox.. So if your like me, and want to play your games at higher resolution than a puny xbox. Your probably not like this gimp that flames a PC building thread with xbox lameness. To bad he is stuck in the "console" world. Maybe his parents cant afford to buy him a computer, or maybe he is too lazy to get a job and buy one himself. Its just too bad that more people who think consoles are "all that" dont realize that the PC is the true gaming platform of choice. Then again there could be people (like the one quoted above) that are just too stupid to realize it.

 • k, so i have a dell dimension 4300 that ive had for a while...about the only thing ive done to it was add RAM up to 768 and change the video card to a radeon 9600 series everything else is stock including a slow and old p4 1.6 processor well, so far call of duty, day of defeat, counterstike, blah blah blah have all run fine as well as all my other programs after i replaced the videocard and upgraded my RAM... then came the halo trial version...it works ok with everything turned on and at highest levels...until theres more than 2 things moving on the screen... well, im figuring i have the ram and the videocard pushing everything, and my processor just doesnt have the power to take full advantage.... well, now that i cant wait till november to play halo online i wanna switch to to a faster AMD finally anyways, at least now i have an excuse, i have around 500 bucks to spend, and theres a few comp stores around that do custom stuff, but id rather find out here first, becuz ur not trying to make moolah off me, lol so i need tips on how to switch my older P4 1.6 into a AMD machine... if u can gimme a price on the AMD 64 u keep talking about, and keep seeing in ads...lol but a step below that wouldnt hurt either lol, thanks in advance... • Hello Han-blam!-blazzed, Well first off I have to give you my honest opinion about dells "dude you got ripped off" (a parody of their commercials). Dell buys the lowest bidder hardware (i.e. whoerver will make the hardware the cheapest dell buys it). So upgrading the things you can (RAM, CPU, Graphics Card) wont usually make up for the things you cant (Front Side Bus speed). So if you want an Athlon instead of a pentium. You will basically have to buy a new computer. This is because you will have to replace the motherboard, CPU, Power Supply, RAM (probably), and possibly the case (as the form fitting factor may be very different). Go to my original post, and click on the PriceWatch.com link. There you can find the best prices on any hardware. Sometimes local computer stores will price-match other web sites within about 10%. Take your $500 and buy a new motherboard and processor, and then save another 500, then buy 1 gig of RAM and a new aluminum case with a big power supply (480 watt or better), then buy a big harddrive, and you might want to get a new enthusiast style graphics card (geforce 6800ultra) for your new machine. I suggest keeping your older system togather and working. As it will make a great home entertainment center (jukebox, movie center) ,and also will be great for downloading stuff while you play games on your new machine. If you need any further help.. just post here again and I will do my best to be of assistance. I hope this is usefull you.

I know from my bro that I need an Intel CPU. I'm willing to spend about 180 Max for it. nothin great, but i want it to be nice. I have researched these for about 2 weeks now, with null results. please help me or I will die. Also, My pops made this (hes good with comps, but dosent like to do stuff with them after works over, his job is a consultant. Long hours.) custom, if it helps. [Edited on 7/8/2004 6:41:33 PM]

 • ok, ok, just relax pink menace.... First off if you want a faster CPU then you either can buy the fastest that your mother board can handle, or buy a new motherboard and CPU that is compatible with all the other hardware you already have. If your mother board is an intel based chipset (i.e. only accepts intel CPU's) then just read the motherboard manual that came with it. In this manual it should have a guide on what CPU's can go onto your mother board. I would suggest that you buy the best you can for your availible funds. Or you could save more of your money, buy a new mother board/CPU combo, and build a new computer with your faster chipset. Its really up to you. Saving when there are so many possibilities to buy stuff is hard, but if you sock it away some where (like a savings account). It is easier because it isnt burning a hole in your pocket. Remember always to look around for the best prices. If you need any more help, then post again or msg me. I hope I helped.

 • You did. BTW: Sorry if I came off a little tense. I've been getting rather frustrated at... my lack of expertise in this area. Thanks for the info. Ill call my pops for the mother board manuel. Does the mother board say on it what type it is, then could I use that to get the manuel off the net? I'm not sure my pops still has the manuel.

 • I can understand how computers can make you tense. Even after getting my A+ and MCSE certification some PC problems that I have encountered still boggle my own mind. This usually leaves me totally freaked out and very annoyed (so I usually log onto a net game and frag until the solution comes to me). The name and serial number of the motherboard is usually printed on it. Just take the cover off your computer (dont touch any of the inside parts), and make sure you are unscrewing the most outside edge screws as you dont want to unscrew your power supply (also make sure the computer is turned off). The manufacturers name and mother board model number is usually printed on the edge of the mobo (motherboard). Sometimes its right in the middle. Just take that info down and search for the makers name first, then for the model number on the mobo makers webpage. If you have any other problems or questions just post and I will get to them quick. Im glad this is helping.

 • Ahhh Moriarity, you speak the truth. I hate playing staring wars with my comp for 5 hours before I figure out what the hell I/it did wrong. Second, I havent been on in a while, but I am noticing a peculiar trend. People must realize that CPU upgrades are "usually" not as important as any other type of upgrade. IMO, most games nowadays can be run on a 2ghz processor (or the AMD equivelant). The most important thing is your GPU. However, in something like Pinks case, he definitly could stand to get a faster processor. As the gaming world evolves, gfx become nicer and nicer, and as such, a better gpu is very beneficial. Just thought I would clarify this, as a CPU upgrade can be pretty substantial if for PIV (AMD's are cheap, that why I like them! As well as more work per cycle etc). Any comments on or if I have leaky knowledge would be appreciated.

 • Thanks letmelive your input is great. Its true that many overlook the CPU as the root of thier poor gaming experience problem. Most of the time it is the graphics card, though some times it is even deeper. A man came into my shop and asked me why his computer bogged down when he tried to use teamspeak with his games running at the same time. He had a decent graphics card and a fast processor with plenty of RAM. After giving his machine the once over I found that his FSB (front side bus) speeds were VERY slow (133). Unfortunatly all I could recommend was that he buy a new Mobo (motherboard) that all of his existing hardware was compatible with. So he did, and that was the end of his problem. Pink definately needs to get a better graphics card and CPU/motherboard. Unfortunatly he has opted not to post in this thread so I am no longer able to help him. Thanks again for the great input and keep it coming!!
