What do you think about JJ Abrams doing Star Wars Episode 7?

Personally, when I look at the Star Trek films JJ Abrams has done, I feel this stuff: 1) The guy does awesome action scenes 2) The guy uses good filming techniques 3) The guy is very "Hollywood" Blockbuster in his approach. Its a totally decent film to see in theatres, but I have pretty much forgotten the film by the time I leave the theatre and am not especially excited to buy it on Disc to watch repeatedly. In 10 years, I will probably be unimpressed. So basically, I feel like JJ Abrams does not have the ability to create a "Bade Runner" original epic. I hope he aims for greatness and not the best of the generic, in doing Star Wars. But I'm not expecting anything outrageously excellent and original (i.e. When The Matrix #1 came out). What do you all think?

  • I'm optimistic. I very much agree with your third point, the guy doesn't really know how to be original and make a movie stand out of the crowd. However, I think he's gotten better as his career has progressed. He's also a huge Star Wars nerd, and I think he's going to do his best to be faithful to his audience. So while he's not my favorite directer, I'm going to be optimistic. At any rate, I know he can do better than the prequels. Plus, he knows how to make a movie fun and not super moody, which is how Star Wars is supposed to be.
