Bungie....you better issue an apology/Statement!

Hey guys. Just to let you know that due to some small message in (or thought to be in) your new trailer that apparantly reads "Wheres Maddie?" small but growing numbers of halo fanboys are posting stuff on websites related to the disapperance of a kid in the UK named Madaline McCann. Now i dont know how well you know the UK press....but they can be, say...reactionary at best. Especially about Maddie. All it would take is a few more posts and you can be sure you'll end up in a few of the red tops....and i assure you it wont be favourable to the Bungie cause. They love a good anti-gaming story. You may want to issue a statement to people telling them to calm down before the press get hold of it. About 24 hours i reckon. Just thought i'd warn you :) P.s Ask Frankie if you want to know more about the British press...i'm sure he's got some horror stories..

 •
Posted by: DeathReaper112 Im pretty sure not many will even care.
In europe, madeleine mccann gained more column inches than the entirity of the iraq and afghan wars. She's a photogenic, cute blonde girl who got abducted, then probably abused and dumped in the ocean somewhere, and bungie have just made what appears to be an overt reference to her disappearance in a video game. Do you seriously think no one is going to question that?

 • A: its not legal they shud be worried about, its bad press B: The BBC would never do a story on this kind of issue, the tabloids willl be happy to

 •
Posted by: elmicker
Posted by: Blade Sandstorm So you are saying you can link 1 phrase from a fictional video game to an event that happened in real life to some random? No.
Erm, yes. The link has already been made. You can deny it all you like but it is there. Outside of the bungie community this trailer's pretty much only getting coverage because of the maddie faux pas. You cannot deny the fact that the connection is there. I'm simply astounded that bungie missed it, especially given the magnitude of the case in the rest of the world.
Bungie didn't make the connection, YOU DID. Are you aware of how many children go missing and are never found every year? When it all comes down to it, its just another UK V.S US issue.

 • Can i just point out that if you would care to google Madeleine McCann halo 3 every gaming website i can name is talking about it, the words: New halo 3 trailer reference to missing Madeleine McCann? - and such are everwhere. Many of these websites are not UK based at all. Someone mentioned media storm because im hearing thunder in the distence. I just hope it doesnt get blown out of proportion and cause any problems with its release etc.

They said it was purely a coincidence.
they'd better get used to saying that if they want to persist using "Where are you maddie?" because i can guarantee you that isn't going to go down well with people who aren't bungie fanboys. their localisation and marketing teams should be very, very aware of that fact. That's why i'm amazed they've gone for it.
Im pretty sure not many will even care.

I doubt even ex-pats care about another missing girl. Just because the BBC does international news coverage doesn't mean all the news it covers is international news.

 •
Posted by: elmicker I find it hard to believe no one involved in the production of the trailer didn't think for a second that asking that question may be miscontrued. There's nothing wrong with naming a character maddie if you're prepared to shrug off all the assocations with the mccann case.
Which is exactly what they did. They said it was purely a coincidence. Ok I'll speak my mind cause this is the internet damn it, I know either A. nobody will listen, or B. someone will care and get mad, but honestly, if will make me feel alot better by saying this. GET OVER IT. It's been over a year and a half, so, someone uses a name that resembles hers, for a few frames, in a video for a video game, set in the future. I swear if a game that reenacted the assassination of John F Kennedy ( Click Here) only gets a few minutes of media time, I'm sure this will pass over without making it on the nightly news. No offense was meant, and that's been stated already, what more could you possibly want. If you come here, threatening an all out english media stake out at Bungie Studio for a year and a half old event, you're lucky to get any response, let alone the sympathetic one you got.

 • I serouosly doubt the e3 idea, the fact is that this issue will be blown out of proportion and twisted by the british tabloids and that this could cause a media storm resulting in masses of bad press for the new project, which can't be a good start, although this i'm sure was entiry coincedental perhaps it would be in bungie's best interset to kill the story with an announcement asserting that they are in no way linked

Maybe the Brits can prove they are so much better than us and stop copying what our press does...which is report the most asinine stories that have almost no relevance to society or current events...LOSER

 •
Posted by: Recon Number 54 And if "maddie" stands for; Multiple Automated Defensive Dispersal & Interdiction Experiment What then? It is a flipping name. A tragedy does not create a reservation on the name's use. Or is no one naming their children Diana anywhere?
The name maddie is not a problem for (as far as i have read) any of the people on here. The problem is that it was used in relation to maddie being missing, in the UK we have seen this everywhere so as soon as we read it we think Madeleine McCann aka maddie (she was called maddie by the press). Its just a very unlucky coincidence im also thinking this may have been the reason it could have been pulled from E3.

 •
Posted by: elmicker
Posted by: Cocomaan Bungie should not have to google every single name they put into their games because some random people on the internet might get upset.
Why not? The "random people on the internet" are the same "random people on the internet" who are posting on HBO, SA, b.net and all sorts of other forums about this very subject. Those "random people on the internet" are the source of bungie's success, they're bungie's target market. It took the internet all of 30 seconds to make that connection, if bungie didn't make the same connection, then their team has fallen down at some point. If they did make the connection and chose to do nothing about it, well....
... well what? Are you going to stop playing Halo? Is anyone? Nobody gives a -blam!- about this, trust me. If you can link an article running in a grocery store tabloid, we have something to talk about. Until then, it's all "Need moar internets!" and contrived outrage at a complete coincidence that Bungie, I'm sure, has a disclaimer for in their credits.
