How truly random is destiny?

It seems like certain people get more of a certain item or it takes longer for some people to get something. If Rng was truly random how could you data mine destiny or is everything preset after you make your guardian?

  • Just because Xur is supposedly random, doesn't mean that Bungie can't re-roll his inventory (read: control) until they get a combination they are comfortable with (or roll more than one combination to choose from). There is a reason why Universal Remote (never before sold) and Red Death (hasn't been sold since the first few weeks) just "randomly" showed up after the shotgun and pulse rifle buff. That's a little too coincidental for me to believe Bungie doesn't have any say in what gets sold each week.

    • If you're talking about drops they are RNG. Xur is random but the random draw happens in advance of his arrival and apparently now there are two Xurs they can pick from according to Megamanexe. The reason why you see people get multiples of items is because given a large enough sample size even unlikely events will occur, like someone getting 5+ gjallarhorns or 7 Suros Regimes. Each player's experience is a very, very small sample of a very large data set.

      • The only datamining I'm aware of is datamining Xûr, whose inventory is likely random but rolled several weeks in advance. When you hear about people getting an absurd amount of something or not getting a specific thing after hundreds of attempts, it's actually biased data. Those people are statistical abberations, outliers if you will, but only the abberations feel the need to post about something, so to someone who bases their ideas of the games RNG based on what they read on the forums it will seem different than it likely is.
