It appears (and maybe it's perfectly clear to everyone and I am explaining the obvious) that there are 3 "tiers" within a topic.
1: OP (where they state their thought, ask their question, do whatever they can to get discussion going)
2: Comments (where a member responds to the OP)
3: Replies (Where people begin the real exchanges and conversations underneath the heading of someone's Comment)
Within the replies is a wonderful little tool that is popping up to the left side. It is a dynamic link between a post and WHO/what that post is responding to. It includes mouseovers that allow you to see (even if the post to which the reply is above or below your display) what a particular post is in response to and WHO the member is addressing in their post.
Take a look in a 3rd tier response (Replies) that have a dozen or so entries (expand those replies). Then you can mouseover and SEE the graphic tracing of how the conversation is going back and forth. It's VERY cool and in some ways is MUCH better than a flat vertical sort.
I recommend that you take a look and see how it helps you to follow a conversation that took place minutes, hours, days ago and how it allows your to "jump in" at a relevant and appropriate "point of entry".
Here's a topic that has an example in it. Read BELOW before you click
When you get there, find the Comment that has "6+ replies" and click on the link for the Replies. Then mouseover the Avatars within the thread. THAT's the reply-linking. You can also hover over items in the links to see not only who is replying, but to whom they are speaking.

That is incredibly useful. I have had problems following some conversations here before. Thanks for the update.
-
I discovered this feature yesterday accidentally. Very cool.

-
I'm still so confused on this linking thing. >.<
-
It's kinda like YouTube. It's a nice feature.
-
It's so pale and subtle, I never noticed this. This might actually help me make the sdjustment for the different thread layout.
-
It's VERY cool and in some ways is MUCH better than a flat vertical sort.
I absolutely agree with this.
-
Very confusing to me honestly. So the 2nd tier responses are in reverse chronological order. Is the 3rd tier in reverse or in normal chronology?

Edited by Verachi: 1/13/2013 6:47:48 PMI noticed that little arrow before but I wasn't sure what it was. That's pretty neat, it makes it a lot easier to know who's talking to who. I'd still like the chronological order to come back with pages but I wouldn't mind if this reply feature stayed.

This is interesting.
-
Oh thats a real nice touch. I will steal this idea when I design something and pretend I invented it.
-
I figured this out on my own about an hour ago. Very useful feature, I wish more sites that use the nested comment structure would implement it.
-
Awesome feature.

The one that says "about 7 fish"?

Edited by Disambiguation: 1/12/2013 8:38:50 PMThis only works until the replied-to post is viewable on the same page as the response. Your example contains a reply more than one page down from the original comment, and the mouseover line thus vanishes. Ergo, this system breaks down for large sub-threads. Although I suppose clicking on the arrow helps, it still feels like something that was quickly thrown together without much forethought. Then again, that's why we're beta testing :)

Edited by Avants Garde: 1/12/2013 8:35:40 PMThere should be a "to X" "in response to X" or something somewhere.
-
I saw the linking yesterday, but didn't notice that it actually says their name too. Very cool.
-
Very cool feature!

While this is useful information and I appreciate the new features, I still can't shake the jarring new layout. I strongly prefer the previous UI. And that's unusual because I usually welcome change and in some cases, prefer it...but not here.
-
Then you can mouseover and SEE the graphic tracing of how the conversation is going back and forth.
you can also click the arrow on the graphic and it'll jump you back to the post in question, highlighting it.
-
I hadn't found this feature yet. Much appreciated.
-
Should we start replying to one another in a haphazard way to create an example with which readers can explore this feature?

I see recon

Edited by The 7th Taco: 1/12/2013 1:34:38 PMAwesome. I was a bit confused about the reply system, but this makes sense.

Good job pointing that out Recon. That's very useful to know.
