My theory is that she is a Vex Operant. She was created by the Vex to covertly gain information about the Light. Her weapon "has parts that shouldn't exist yet", not to mention that she can teleport in and out of time and space at her will. She isn't helping the Guardians, she's luring them into a trap. Did you notice the destruction of the Black Garden seemingly had no effect on the Vex Collective. It wasn't meant to do so, she simply is delaying the player so she can perfect her plan to stab him/ her right in the back. Also, did you ever notice that the Ghost and the Exo Stranger don't particularly like each other?
But hey, that's just a theory. A GAME theory.

I think the ghost/stranger tension has more to do with the fact she is the embodiment of darkness and the ghost is light. I think the FWC sending someone into the furure makes sense, and I believe it is also tied somehow into the Ishtar Collective and Dr. Shim's research into Vex. Perhaps Ishtar Collective perfected the technology that FWC used to send the stranger forward in time. Or Ishtar Collective sent her and when she returned she told people what she saw, thus the FWC was born.

I think she truly is trying to help us, personally my theory goes as so. The Exo Stranger is trapped by the Vex somewhere, and her mere apperance is a hologram, a vision, as the legends say. She has been to many different multiverses of the present, and in each attempt to teach guatdians to destroy the Black Garden in the hopes she would be freed. we are the first to break this cycle and the time period is now forever changed, in her time in the Vex Time Waves, she was able to construct a weapon with components not even invented or discovered yet. She awards you this gun to reward you for freeing her and to let her start anew.

Well you theory is great and all but why would she not just kill the guardian and take the ghost in the first place? I think she is from the future and has been fighting the vex because they are putting themselves in all possible time realities past present and future. I think it means that the vex ultimately outlast the hive and fallen because the stranger views them as the threat.

Right - she only seems worried about the Vex and maybe Kabal. Not sure if she mentioned Mars because the Vex have a presence there or because of the Kabal.

Perhaps because she wants to spy on the Guardians and the Vanguards in order to learn their plans against the Vex. Again, this is all complete speculation, therefore there will be many "holes" in my theory.
