People need to stop using mental disorders...

...to explain their bad behavior or behavior that is perceived as bad. Among many examples I could give, here is one: "Oh, I am violent and hit people and scream at the top of my lungs because I have anger problems". Maybe you do that because that is what is easy and you don't want to take responsibility for your own actions and try to fix your problem because that takes effort. Having anger problems is no excuse for bad behavior. It is just a cop out. Scientists hate this because they want to know the reasons behind everything. But ur brain is complicated and is no slave to any genetic coding. Only brainwashing. [Edited on 01.08.2013 1:06 PM PST]

  • I'm type 2 Bi-polar, I wouldn't say I use it as an excuse, but people need to understand not to take aggressive behavior from me personally.

  • ^--------- I am not talking exclusively about violent people
Well... Actually, yes it is, by proxy. I think you're confusing reason and excuse.
A reason is an excuse when people know they shouldn't do something but do it anyway. Or even if they believe what they are doing is ok, in order to make themselves feel less at fault, they use "reasons" as an excuse. [Edited on 01.08.2013 1:30 PM PST]

  • Anyone who is unable to control themselves and is violent should be locked up.

  •
Posted by: XxExpungexX
If someone has a professionally diagnosed mental disorder, it is a reason for inconsistencies in their behaviour. Just as a depressed person may become incredibly upset involuntarily, someone who suffers from anger problems may find it very hard to suppress themselves emotionally. I'm not saying that having a mental disorder should absolve you from misdeeds, but they are definitely a reason for abnormal behaviour. I appreciate that it's common (and, to an extent, reasonable) for someone who hasn't been there and/or doesn't work professionally in the field to have doubts about this though. • That South Park episode where Cartman imitated having tourettes describes this issue perfectly.

  • Doctors are too quick to diagnose their patients with mental illnesses. I once told my doctor I had a hard time sleeping even when I was tired, and he was going to put me on anti depressants.

It is irritating how many people use disorders as an excuse. Like Naughty Child Syndrome. Unfortunately people find it hard to distinguish between genuine ADD/ADHD and being a little sod. Better to just stick 'em on Ritalin and let them pay the price later. As far as I see it, a disorder might mitigate your behaviour but it doesn't excuse it.

OP, more than half the Flood have a diagnosed disorder. You're in hot water.
