Halo 4's map design is one of the best in the series

At least for me, a Halo title has always been defined by it's maps. The Halo series has created some of the best competitive play areas in FPS history, with maps such as Blood Gulch, Beaver Creek, Hang 'Em High, Ascension, Headlong, Lockout, Midship, Ivory Tower, Guardian, High Ground, Valhalla, Narrows, The Pit, Countdown, and Powerhouse only to name a few. (I know, that was more than a few. But let's face it, Halo has some great maps. Also, I intentionally did not list any Halo 4 maps as to not disrupt the nostalgia) Every game will have it's bad eggs, for example Chiron TL-34, Isolation, and Boardwalk. But more than any other FPS franchise, Halo has always been able to deliver fun and memorable maps. When I reflect upon past Halo games, the most iconic image in my mind are the maps. Of course core gameplay mechanics are a major concern as to the success of a title, and everyone has their own taste when it comes to this, but maps are usually what bind a Halo multiplayer experience together. With that being said, I believe Halo 4 has some of the best entries in the series. Up until the release of the Crimson Map Pack and that damn map Wreckage there wasn't a single map in the game in which I would loathe to play. Often times I would groan after Ragnarok or Haven would be upvoted, but hey, that's only because I play them so much and that really says something about their design. Halo 4 has some very solid maps in its lineup and that's what keeps me coming back. The very fact that I enjoy playing in the spaces makes the game pretty memorable for me. I've already written a lot, so I won't delve much deeper, but the reasons I feel this way are thus... -Great flow -Easy to navigate -Controllable locations -Good mix of asm/symetrical, large, medium, and small -Defined play areas -Memorable, various, and distinct scenery/environments -Compliment gameplay mechanics -Distinguished call points

  •
Posted by: Peco Okay then I just find Adrift to be generally good due to it's 3 story layer and the fact that it's symmetrical, but games do go badly on occasion.
Adrift is absolute garbage. They looked at campdown and thought "Hmm, lets make it even bigger!". Even worse thanks to ordnance drops like sword/shotgun/scattershot and boltshot secondary. Halo 4 only has 1 map that is actually good. 1 single map that is well designed, flows well and plays good. That map is Haven.

  • You put Powerhouse on the list of good and TL34 in the list of bad? What the hell is wrong with you?!?

  • Isolation was a great map OP! Anyway, I thought Halo 4 had some pretty good maps, particularly Solace, and Adrift. But I found the Crimson Map Pack rather lacking, the scenery had very little variety.

I can understand all the other opinions, but how can one hate Adrift?
Most of the time, nothing happens, and then when something does happen it's over two fast. I'm not saying it's not enjoyable because it certainly is, just that the map design is bad, in contrast to how haven's design is good (on a scale of -7 to 7, haven would be a 6 and adrift would be a -6)
Okay then I just find Adrift to be generally good due to it's 3 story layer and the fact that it's symmetrical, but games do go badly on occasion.

  • I agree OP. I like all of Halo 4's maps, save for Solace, and I don't really hate it with a passion or anything. I have a love/hate relationship with Adrift and Complex depending on my mood. Its worth noting I haven't played any of the new DLC maps or Meltdown enough to have a definite opinion of them.

  •
Posted by: Mastergee The 4v4 maps are generally lacklustre, aside from Haven and Adrift those maps don't appeal to me, I also quite like Harvest and Wreckage from the Crimson map pack. This game's big team maps really do shine though. Ragnarok, Exile, Longbow and Meltdown are all great maps which is why I enjoy playing BTB so much.
I think Longbow is terrible for BTB, but fantastic for Dominion Meltdown is an iffy map across the board due to it's spawning of people(all over the place) and ordinances(over abundance of Incineration Cannons/Binary Rifles)

  • Other than the map breaking Gauss Hog, I don't see why everyone hates Exile so much. My favorite maps though would have to be: Small: Adrift/Haven Large: Ragnarok/Exile Dominion: Longbow The worst map I have ever played though would be Complex, one reason being that it's in all the wrong playlists(seriously, it's literally built for Dominion yet it's in Regicide) and the other reason is that it's a generally bad map.

I could create a more diverse and fun map set using Halo 3's Forge on Foundry and Sandbox, than what Halo 4 has to offer right now.

  • Halo 2 had the best maps. Halo 3 had good ones too. You know what the new maps dont have that dont make them as great. Buttons and Moving parts. Or any change in the maps. Changes in the map are great. It makes the battlefield dynamic and interesting.

  • The only one that I think is memorable is Complex. I love Complex. All the others are fine to play on, but pretty forgettable. Reach also had Swordbase which was better than most, and a Forge World one that I can't remember the name of. [Edited on 01.07.2013 11:12 PM PST]

  • Please tell me you are trolling. In my opinion, the maps are too small, lack details and good hiding places, and don't have enough space to really use vehicles effectively.
