Why I prefer leaving Cortana the way she is [SPOILERS]

Cortana has always been the human side of Chief. The side that allows regular Chief to be what he is- completely battle focused. Now that she's gone, Chief will have to have something else to take up Cortana's side. And that something should be himself. I don't want Cortana to come back as I want the conflict between Chief- the hero vs. human conflict- to be expanded upon and developed. Anybody else feel the same way? •
Posted by: Haloroach
Posted by: charger544 well too bad, because she's obviously not dead. Cortana and the Master Chief were composed when the HAVOK nuke was detonated. Then, he was recomposed in space. That's how the UNSC found him. Why Cortana wasn't recomposed? Because she was in the system.
Seems legit
• I'd say it's a toss up. Bringing her back WOULD seem cheap, but taking out one of the two most important characters in the series would seem like a bad idea. My idea for how bringing her back would be that Mediciant took a ride on John's MJOLINR, kept hidden for whatever reason, and when Cortana was gonna asplode he pulled out some applied plebotinum and nabbed her from the system. There's some plot holes in this but that could be patched up by someone actually a writer. Still if I was in 343, before I killed myself, I would ensure that Cortana stayed dead. Bringing her back would be a little cliché in my eyes, but I suppose it would be ok if they pulled it off well.

  • @fsabran - This is most likely the case, in which the "soul" itself would actually be called a Gea (cannot remember correct spelling). As I said, this is most likely the best scenario of what will happen. But, I can't help but get the feeling there will be remnants of Cortana everywhere. At least in the Chief's eyes.

  • Blackeagles's theory of the Master Chief discovering a human "soul" inside of him ( like the lord of admirals in chakas) makes a lot of sense and fit's nicely with the way the story is developing.

343 is canon sorry. Anyway i think there is way more to this than we know yet, there are alot of hints in h4. Liberian changing chief, she changes him she says in many ways. There are 2 things we know that has changed for chief 100%. 1. chief is immune to the composer. 2. chief geas has been activiated, or advanced, which is why he can hear the didact when cortana couldnt. I find it strange also how chief can hear cortana in his head even when her chip was destroyed by the didact on the last mission. Anyway, i think the key for cortana here is this thing about how forerunners were trying to become imortal by chaging from biological to digital. I think when the liberian took cortana she changed her in those moments to fully become in the digital relm with the liberian. I think cortana is still alive somwhere in the forerunner system at requiem, the other part of her just stayed with chief to make sure he would be ok, after all she can split herself up, she done it before. then finaly there's this thing about the forerunner domain where cortana could be in some form with help from the liberian. After all cortana is chiefs ancilla and the liberian has planned chief and cortana to get the mantle for humanity for a very long time, there no way she would take cortana , not realize shes going rampant and just give her back to the chief without doing somthing about it. so yeh i dont know what will happen but im prity sure this isnt the last time we will hear of cortana. Secondly, the Composer can not recompose beings back into organic forms, as said by the Librarian. Thirdly, the Composer didn't compose either of them before, even though they were standing next to it. Next, the Composer can't recompose you if the Composer is destroyed by a nuke. Finally, Chief and Cortana survived because Cortana used the hard light bridge as a shield to protect Chief from the blast, not because they were composed.

  • She was only beginning her descent into rampancy. I can't recall about a Mendicant Bias fragment. Where was that said? (My memory must be bad today). Anyways, do I have this feeling there is more to her death than we are thinking? Most likely. There are so many aspects that people have initially left out - such as Mendicant Bias and even Meta-Stability. Like I said though, she just started her fall into rampancy. There would have to be some time gap for her to come back from it I would think. At least in my head that's how it works. When you do think about her entire timeline though, her "defeating" the Didact and saving the one person she cared about the most is really how an important character would die.

  • Didn't Cortana have a Mendicant Bias fragment with her? Why didn't it do anything to save her? With all the story built around Cortana, it seems like she got killed off for nothing. She should have achieved meta-stability.

  •
Posted by: THOMSY99 Maybe the AI is Chakas
This wouldn't work for multiple reasons, at least to me. The first would be: During the time the fragment of Guilt Spark was found aka Chakas, ONI was doing their own work without Halsey's knowledge. This couldn't work only because the location of GS/Chakas is known. I'm pretty sure I also thought I read somewhere the fragment was destroyed. I could be wrong though. The only way this could work if by some ungodly chance that Halsey put the bits and pieces together on how the souls of deceased human's were forged into AIs. The the location of Chakas/GS being found and Halsey forced to research and forge him into another AI - aside from the fragment ONI was working on. The only other reason this wouldn't work is because the AI shes working on currently, according the Spartan Ops is not any AI they know of or have known of. It's a completely new third party that is being thrown into the loop of things.
Posted by: King Nis085 Sadly, I feel at this point he's going to forcefully be paired with another AI, possibly the one we are witnessing throughout the Spartan Ops episodes now.
I actually think his interaction with another AI would be interesting.
I never thought of that, you maybe right. Halsey does care alot for John, and think that he is the best (Luckiest)Spartan. And would definitly want to have another AI assist John. having a Forerunner AI would add a new twist to the story. Maybe the AI is Chakas

  • You might want to change your title. OT: I want Cortana to stay dead because bringing her back would feel cheap and predictable. It would ruin a very good ending, turning a sad ending into a wait until her return. If a character who dies doesn't stay dead it removes tension and makes the story as a whole weaker, in my opinion.

  • I agree to disagree. While Cortana has always been a major part of the Master Chief, and in all fairness, us as players over the years it would be rather hard for 343i to logically bring her back. I see ways it can be done, but from a story stand point, I don't think they will. At this point it's the Reclaimer Trilogy. The "Reclaimer" is the Master Chief himself. Sadly, I feel at this point he's going to forcefully be paired with another AI, possibly the one we are witnessing throughout the Spartan Ops episodes now. Either he'll reject the AI and continuously ignore it in an attempt to get Cortana back (for try to) or he's going to just accept it for what it is. I have a feeling he's going to try and stick to his mission on keeping Cortana safe, even if that means to bring her back from non-existence.
