TIME sat in on meeting between Goodell and Rich McKay, head of the NFL's powerful competition committee. Goodell brought up a proposal promoted by Greg Schiano, coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers: after a touchdown or field goal, instead of kicking off, a team would get the ball on its own 30-yard line, where it's fourth-and-15. The options are either to go for it and try to retain possession, or punt. If you go for it and fall short, the opposing team would take over with good field position. In essence, punts would replace kickoffs, and punts are less susceptible to violent collisions than kickoffs.
source
For those that watch American football, how do you feel about this?
NOTE - This is not known when this will take effect, if it even does.
Posted by: Viper Skills Sarcastaball.
This idea is so -blam!- great! Everyone should wear full body armor.. god...
Posted by: Jagwire invest more into safer helmets.
But we already have the Schutt ION 4D! It has Energy Wedges!
-
I will no longer watch football if this goes into affect and I really love watching football.
-
Stupid. Stop making stupid rule changes and invest more into safer helmets.
-
That is a HORRIBLE idea. Just keep it the way it is.
-
That's idiotic. Trying to make the sport safer for the players is ruining the game. Players are even getting penalties for apparently having the intention of hurting another player when all they're trying to do is tackle! Like someone else said, might as well give the players flags and turn it into flag football.
Posted by: A Deaf Boy
Posted by: Thrasher Fan This HAS to be satire. No one is that retarded.

Sadly, I don't believe it is because ESPN has an article on this. If they're really considering getting rid of the kickoff, they should just place the ball at the 20-yard line after each score.
-
I don't like it. It would eliminate the on-side kick. The kick off? Ridiculous. [Edited on 12.06.2012 5:43 PM PST]

-blam!- that -blam!-
Posted by: Thrasher Fan This HAS to be satire. No one is that retarded.
I've got a better change: replace Goodell with a commissioner who isn't an idiot.

Sarcastaball.
Posted by: Mzone7 So one team could keep the ball for the entire game? No thanks.
And this is why rugby is superior.
-
wat. Next, they'll be given sticks, and they're going to change the ball [Edited on 12.06.2012 5:29 PM PST]
-
Why would he do this? To prevent injuries? Every single play has the potential to be very dangerous. Taking away the kickoff is just stupid.

This HAS to be satire. No one is that retarded.
Posted by: T1d3 I'm a bucs fan and I love are coach, but that is stupid
Schiano is an amazing coach. Not sure why he would ask for this. he was great at Rutgers.
Posted by: HaLoxGoD552 That makes no sense.
Goodell is a retard anyway.
