The Calm Before the Storm.. (How we can help the new members through)

The Storm or lack for a better phrase, is all the people that will be joining this great community. Now I have a feeling many people on this site may be dreading that moment when they come. They'll ask questions, they might not obey the forum rules right away probably because they won't read them, and many other things that may happen when they come. Some of you are like myself and I know for a fact Bungie Is. We are very excited about this happening. Its going to become a new era and they are ready for it. So the main point of this is to not make you do something, but for you to consider something. Like I said these people are new, and they don't know the forums like we do. So what I want you to consider is to welcome them and be patient with them. Show them and the world of gaming communites that we are the best there is and we care for the new. Now how do we do this? 1.We are patient with them. Remember they haven't been on here like some of us. 2.We answer all their questions no matter what they may be or how simple they may be. 3.We direct them to the right places or to the right people. Either by telling them or linking the place they need to go in our replies. 4.Make sure you try to answer all questions. If you answer one question they may have another, so make sure you answer that, If not it could lead to another thread if its missed. 5. We Make Sure to encourage everyone new to read the rules. This is very important. 6. a user mentioned to lead by example. This is simple and known, but very important. 7. Also remember that while we help, let them do and learn and help when you feel is right. They'll learn best by doing. But still answer questions if anyone has them. Another thing I would like to stress and see older members do and this is number 3 of things to do above. Is When A new member may post something in the forum and you know it isn't right or belongs in another forum. Don't just say "Wrong forum" But instead tell them which forum or even website it belongs in and also if you can link the forum or website it does belong in. So many times I have a feeling we leave members who don't know where to post in the dark with the feeling of "Ok so I posted in the wrong forum, but now where do I go or post this in?" We can change that and help them with that right away. I know many of you do this already, but its just another reminder of something simple we can do to help make the forums a better experience for everyone. Bungie has done a great job of putting things in view, but still people don't always read what they need to read to make the experience here better for all. Another thing we must do is Help the Forum Ninjas they are not here all the time and are volunteers. We the people who have been on this site for awhile must not do something stupid so we can make it easier for them during this time. How do we do that? 1. Report what is needed to be reported. 2. If we have to message them about a problem. 3. Tell the new members the forum ninjas aren't their all the time and not to spam the report button. Well pretty much everything that I stated above. Now Bungie may already be planning how to help and controle the people that will be joining in the coming months and years. But as a community we must try to make this easier for them By helping how little we can and doing these simple things. We must conduct ourselves in a proper way. Don't make them deal with us when they have many other things to deal with. Like I said even if we can't do a lot lets still try to make it easier for them. So get ready community this may not be easy, but lets welcome everyone who comes here that sees the light getting brighter. Lets welcome them and make this new experience the best that we can possibly make it for them. (Also if you have anything else we could do to help in anyway pleas post here and I will edit my post with your suggestions so that it will be easier for people to read it here. Also feel free to DM with any questions or suggestions you may have.) Please everyone remember this thread is here to help people get ready for the exciting times ahead.. In no way do I want this to be a place to argue about something and prove someone wrong. If you can discuss it in a fair way Please do so. [Edited on 01.04.2013 1:47 PM PST]

You squashed it sir, I hope you are proud of yourself.
awesome thanks man for your support!
No problem, you made a lot of really good points and deserve recognition!
Posted by: devastat0r09 It sounds like we're about to welcome new medical residents into our hospital. Anybody still watch Scrubs? I sure do, oh right off topic! I think you're right, as the old and faithful Bungie community members, we have an obligation to welcome the newbies in with open arms, and open hearts. I, personally, cannot wait to do so. Edit: You made a great thread OP.
awesome thanks man for your support!
Posted by: PVSpartanL36 I like this. I think most of the people here now would be happy to help the newbies. And they'll figure out some stuff on their own too. I started logging on consistently just before this year's Bungie Day, and I've found my way around okay. Of course, I still don't understand everything. Like what the heck is wet noodle?
awesome thanks and yeah I think that is great. Yeah I'm sure they will, and always nice to have a few helping hands though. The wet noodle.... Hmm... It's better you don't know.. Haha

I'm not saying you need to hold their hands. But I encourage you if someone needs help, to help them. That is all.
Posted by: Unisaur 64 This wasn't the procedure for newbies beforehand ? Surely, the Bungie community doesn't need a guide on how to introduce new members to the forums, right ? RIGHT ? There is a lot of things I don't understand about the way this place works...
its something everyone should definitely do all the time... But during the time of a new game it's very important because we need to make them feel welcome so they stay around and there is going to be a lot more then the average day. So yes people know this, but its good to be reminded for an important time that is coming. [Edited on 12.08.2012 2:54 PM PST]
Posted by: WaffleFairy937 They have to learn by experience, i created a profile about 3 years ago and probably got banned 3 or 4 times for 3 to 8 days. The profile i created in January (because i finally got xbox live) has not been banned and the last warning i received was four months ago.
I agree and thats really good and important. It's always nice having people to be around though who will help them through it too if they have questions. Makes the experience even better, but again I agree they have to learn too through doing.
Posted by: sendger
Posted by: EZcompany2ndsqd
Posted by: F12 All these ideas so far are great and all, but in the end we know the real fans will stay and add numbers to those already cemented here as fans of Bungie and the rest of those only caught up in the hype will be gone after a year or two. Safe to say, I think anyone who spends a small portion of their time on these forums knows to tell the difference between the helpful from the not-so-helpful. Anyway, can't wait for greenhorns to show up.
I agree with you.. in a way But just because someone may leave in a year a two doesn't mean we can't make them feel welcomed. If we try to help a little those two years will be a great time and could lead to them staying as true fans. it will also make the next two years run smoother and better for you and me and for Bungie.
Games and game studios will always have their superficial and dedicated fans, but as far as things go I think Bungie definitely has one of the best communities. Especially the way they interact with the fan base. However I wouldn't expect them 'Rookies' to be out of the picture after the second year. If the game is any where near as successful as previous titles, then people will still be posting and playing well into the run up to the next game. Hell there is even that 'Comet' dlc to keep things going. As far as prep goes for the new kids I think things will work out. We'll be more active than ever, We'll be there to pick up on any problems, We'll be there to help out, We'll be there to keep the legends going (and the myths). When someone does something they shouldn't be....We'll be there When someones cat is stuck up a tree.............We'll be there When the world needs us.........We'll....be....there. (Ahem) Sorry got carried away. Bring on the newbies Long live the Seventh Column.
Thanks for posting and I agree with you too, I'm encouraged by all the people posting in the thread its pretty cool to see.
