Question on the Forerunners [Possible Spoilers]

Now, if you haven't beaten Halo 4 yet, there may be some spoilers here. So stop reading. OK? As we learn in Halo 4, the Forerunners and Humans already made contact millenna ago and a war broke out. The Forerunners put us essentially back into the Stone Age. Now here's my question; is this something Bungie had already established in the Halo universe or is this something 343 added? I'm really sorry if this is a silly question, I don't know as much about Halo's overall storyline as I'd like to.

 •
Posted by: App L Sawz I think Bungie had probably thought about some of what the Forerunners might be, established some of the ground work, but I think it's safe to say that at least most of the work was done by the guys at 343 with the Forerunner saga of books and Halo 4.
Bungie originally planned to do a Halo 4 instead of Reach and got round to the concept stage where Isaac Hannaford drew his rendition of what was labelled a Promethean. You'll notice a number of similarities with 343i's Promethean Knights, mainly the weapons integrated into the armour and the stand-outish angular plating.

 • It was implied in Halo 3 if you were paying very close attention, but you wouldn't have caught onto it unless you'd read Cryptum. So 343i effectively made the idea, but Bungie planted the seed. Edit: Basically what ajw said. [Edited on 12.04.2012 1:23 PM PST]

 • This idea was added in Halo Cryptum, a book by Greg Bear working with 343i.

 • It was first revealed that ancient man had an empire in Cryptum, not H4. Read it for some more background and exposition on the Forerunners. It was 343i's idea to add the ancient human empire. [Edited on 12.04.2012 12:50 PM PST]

 • It's essentially something that 343i has added, but the Librarian's dialogue in Halo 3's Terminals with the Didact carries the implication that the Forerunners have had a pretty negative effect on the races they were supposed to protect.
Can't you see? Belief in the Mantle sealed our doom! Weakened our [protectorates], bred dependence and sloth. Our [so-called Guardianship] has stripped those we would keep safe of any capacity for self-defense!
This can be applied perfectly to the situation with Ancient Humanity.
