The Halo engine and Destiny.

We know that Bungie could not retain any rights to Halo pretty much, but what about the engine itself? It's not like some other engines that can be liscensed to use in games, it's exclusive to Halo. But is there a special case for Bungie? Or did they have to make an entirely new engine from scratch? I think the Halo engine would be fairly good. I'm not sure how it'd hold up to MMO esque features, but as for looks, gameplay, and efficiency it's great.

 • I would hope they would make a brand new engine.

 • I wonder though, based on copyright, how much can they reuse of the reach engine, and what programs can they not use. Also the Grognok Program what is it based upon.

 • Does it really matter? If they game looks amazing, plays amazing and everything is copacetic, will it matter if it's completely brand new engine or the Reach engine re-worked? The sad answer to this question is yes. To a few people, it is the difference between having a positive or negative outlook. "It's the Reach engine redone? This game is going to suck!" To which I say, you're pathetic. Why don't we just drop it? It's like this fact of what engine the game is using will shape our entire view of the game, it's just, silly.

 • What if Grogonk is like the Skyrim Creation Kit? That would be awesome.
Posted by: CrazzySnipe55
Posted by: Arbiter 739 They are using something called Grogonk. •
Posted by: MasterSin
Posted by: talon2000 I would think they would start from the ground up. Especially if they're accommodating for the next-gen consoles.
Pretty much this. Also since they are using brand new technology made by them, it would be the best start from scratch so, there are a lot of reasons why they actually would have to start from zero.
Typically in software, you try to avoid re-writing from scratch all over the place; it's extremely risky. Per your example, it might make a lot more sense to augment an existing engine to support both the XBox 360 and XBox 720, rather than start from ground zero and lock it into one platform. However, moving from a single platform to multi-platform, and hopefully even cross-platform, makes a pretty strong case for starting from scratch. An existing, single-platform engine just might not be flexible enough to move to another platform.

 • As far as i remember, though it is new, the basis of it, is quite similar to Reach's. If anything, Reach can be considered the prototype, to test out new features, while this new game will have most of those problems fixed. ODST, i believe may also have a part in this, as some of it was maybe an experimental design for some new tools that were being thought up. In the end i believe Microsoft owns majority of the Copyrights for codes used in Reach and ODST, so starting from scratch is necessary, its something that is kind of annoying. Even if bungie wrote the programs, its was Microsoft who they worked for, and who gains the copyright. Basic skeletal figure may be the same, or just upgraded, but other than that they are entirely different.

That's now 343i's, as they retain the rights to all things halo. Which I would think would include the engine. But the Planetside 2 engine was made by SOE. It's not a very large company. Probably about Bungie's size. They developed it in-house. But, assuming Destiny is an MMO, I couldn't see Halo's engine being able to just be retooled for that many people vs. what it does now. Bungie has been working on this project for (at least) 2-3 years. They're also not done nor releasing information on the game yet, meaning it's still being developed. I'd say a new engine is entirely within the realm of possibility. [Edited on 12.03.2012 9:08 AM PST]

 • I'd imagine they would HAVE to make a new engine, the same way the guys at SOE had to for Planetside 2 (forgelight - which is amazing, by the way). You can't take an engine made for 16 people and push it to thousands if it's an MMO. But that's a pretty big IF. If it's not an MMO, they possibly could use the Halo Reach engine, but I doubt they would. Judging from their ambitions, they're looking to push what you can do a lot further.

 • pretty sure I read or saw on a ViDoc that it was a new Engine, and just to be clear Saber Interactive devised a new engine called the saber3d engine because their own saber enginge would have made the process too difficult, and we all know the MP was built off the Reach Engine <3

 •
Posted by: T1B3R7uMB0YXVI I was reading one of the computer graphic magazine about how 343 Industry converged Halo CE into the new game engine. They called it the "Saber" engine, which was heavily modified from Bungie's engine. Maybe it's called Sabertooth?
Pretty sure Saber (Saber Interactive) was the company they hired out for designing the graphic overlay engine in Halo Anniversary. Looking up... and Saber's engine is called: Saber engine. So I guess you are sort of right except 343 probably didn't use Saber's engine for anything else and we're talking about Bungie and Destiny not 343 and Halo.

 • The term "new engine" has a complex meaning; companies rarely scrap everything in order to create something new because it's much easier to refine everything in the engine, enough that it seems completely new and different. [Edited on 12.02.2012 9:07 PM PST]
