If the US wanted their oil so badly...

Why didn't they just occupy Canada?

 •
Posted by: Edmi Wohusee Anyone who thinks we went into the middle east for oil is beyond idiotic.
No. Iraq was still about oil. Israel could get Iraqi oil rather than expensive Russian imports. I guess the rest of the USA was supposed to benefit from a swift war that would lead to the Iraqi oil infrastructure being rebuilt so they could start pumping out black gold. Obviously it was a dumb plan that failed to benefit the Americans.

 • America wouldn't attack Canada since both are colonies of the Mighty British Empire ^_^

No but seriously, the whole international community would be pissed. Most of Europe would be in shock and the Terrorists would use it as an excuse to "avenge a peaceful nation" or something like that.

 •
Posted by: Wolverfrog The US has plenty of oil, they're just putting off using it for as long as possible. It's the rest of the world that's -blam!-.
According to recent numbers The U.S. has about 19 billion barrels of oil as known reserves. They produce about 5.5 million a day. Canada has about 175 billion barrels of oil in known reserves and produces about 2.7 million barrels a day. At this rate the U.S. known reserves will last about 10 years. Canada's known reserves will last around 178. Venezuela trumps both with almost 300 billion barrels in known reserves and producing only 2.1 million a day. Their's would last around 390 years at that rate of production.

 •
Posted by: EcksBawks_live Because we get our oil from the Saudis, Alaska and South/Central America.
I see that you don't know that Canada is the largest supplier of oil to the U.S.. In 2010 we shipped about 707 million barrels of oil, approximately 99% of the oil that was exported from Canada. Number 2 was Mexico with about 400 million in 2010. Saudi Arabia coming in 3rd at just under 361 million. I believe that in 2011 Saudi Arabia and Mexico switched places, but Canada remained in a solid first spot on that list. Why wouldn't Canada be high on that list? We only have the 3rd highest known oil reserves in the world. [Edited on 10.04.2012 1:30 AM PDT]

 • The thing is that it is not about the oil itself or the oil fields, but about the dollar. The US dollar is the world's largest currency, and is also used to trade oil with, as decided by OPEC in the 1970s. A number of Middle East states have stopped using the dollar if I am correct, Iran trades in Euro's, Libya threatened changing (IIRC) and Iraq did the same. Notice any patterns? The dollar is what keeps the nation up. It is at a crucial phase. [Edited on 10.04.2012 1:25 AM PDT]

The British Empire was capturing American vessels and forcing their crew to serve on British warships, trying to restrict American trade, supplying native tribes with weapons, ammunition, et cetera to attack the US, and a host of other issues. You're trying to to say the US started 1812 in the face of all the evidence that points to the contrary?
Our country held the right to arrest deserters and traitors to the UK that where employed in the U.S navy, the only reason trade suffered in America was because of the royal navy blockade to prevent France trading, which was necessary since napoleon was doing the whole "Conquer all of Europe" thing at the time. The only reason Britain supplied the natives with weapons was to slow down the land grab and cultural genocide the U.S was committing at the time, there is a reason they where attacking the colonies, and we all know America would have looked to control Canada in the greed the U.S was founded upon.

 •
Posted by: WhaleFair Why didn't they just occupy Canada?
It's less expensive to extract oil from our buddies the Saudis than to extract oil from Canada's reserves. [Edited on 10.03.2012 5:30 PM PDT]

 • Canada, like the US is a member of NATO or North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's a defencive alliance that was founded during the cold war to counter-act the spread of communism and to fight the USSR if they ever decided to go to war. The conditions of the alliance is that no two members may wage war against one another and all members of the alliance must declare war upon an attacker of one of its members. So if the US attacks Canada(which has very little oil compared to the US) the US would be breaking the rules of its Alliance and would have war declared on it by Most of Europe, Canada, and any other countries that are part of the alliance. We don't attack because Canada's our ally and we aren't stupid. [Edited on 10.03.2012 5:22 PM PDT]
